NEWS ON CW 18 STARTS NOW. TONIGHT WE ARE HEARING THE 911 CALLS FROM THE MOMENTS AFTER A LITTLE GIRL WAS SHOT AND KILLED AS SHE SAT INSIDE OF HER HOME WITH HER FAMILY. THIS HAPPENED LAST AUGUST DURING A DRIVE BY SHOOTING ON POPPY AVENUE IN ORLANDO, FIVE PEOPLE ARE NOW BEHIND BARS AND WESH 2’S LUANA MUNOZ WAS RIGHT THERE THE NIGHT WHEN IT HAD HAPPENED AND SHE RETURNED TO THE NEIGHBORHOOD TODAY TO SEE WHAT CHANGES HAVE BEEN MADE. THE CITY OF ORLANDO HAS INSTALLED SEVERAL CAMERAS IN THAT AREA. AFTER LISTENING TO THE 911 CALLS FROM THAT NIGHT, IT IS EVIDENT THAT THERE ARE SO MANY RESIDENTS THAT WERE CONCERNED. WE CHOSE NOT TO AIR THE 911 CALL THAT CAME FROM THE HOME WHERE THAT LITTLE GIRL WAS KILLED. 911 WHAT IS THE LOCATION OF YOUR EMERGENCY? UM, I JUST HEARD RAPID GUNFIRE. I DON’T KNOW IF IT’S POPPY STREET. OR BY ANY COURT. I DON’T KNOW, BUT I HEARD A LOT OF GUNSHOTS. I CAN’T EVEN TELL YOU. I’VE BEEN AROUND. THESE WERE THE 911 CALLS THAT CAME POURING IN ON AUGUST 29TH. POLICE SAY THAT’S WHEN SEVERAL GANG MEMBERS, MANY OF WHOM ARE SEEN IN THESE PHOTOS POSING WITH THEIR HIGH POWERED GUNS, GOT INTO A BACK AND FORTH WITH ANOTHER GANG ON SOCIAL MEDIA. POLICE SAY ONE GANG DROVE TO POPPY AVENUE TO RETALIATE, BUT SHOT AT THE WRONG HOME. A SIX-YEAR-OLD GIRL WAS SHOT AND KILLED. EVEN ONE PERSON. POLICE SAY, WAS IN THE CAR DOING THE SHOOTING. ISAIAH WRIGHT WAS HIT. THEY DRAGGED THIS PERSON TO THE CAR BECAUSE HE WAS ALREADY SHOT AND DEAD. I GUESS HE WAS. HE WAS ON THE GROUND AND I SEEN SOMEBODY GRAB HIM AND PULLING AND THEY PUT HIM IN THE CAR. BUT THERE’S A GUN OUT HERE ON THE GROUND. FIVE MEN WERE ARRESTED, INCLUDING TYRIQUE, OMARI NICHOLS, RICKY BOWRY. 217 YEAR OLDS AND A 15 YEAR OLD NICO BROWN. WHO IS BEING CHARGED AS AN ADULT TODAY. THEY. POPPY AVENUE LOOKS VERY DIFFERENT. AT THE TEMPERATURE OF THE NEIGHBORHOOD IS VERY, VERY QUIET, VERY QUIET. AND NOW PEOPLE ARE NOT SO JUMPY EVERY TIME THEY HEAR A LOUD NOISE. KIDS COULD NOW BE SEEN PLAYING ON THE STREETS, AND CAMERAS ARE VISIBLE ON NEARLY EVERY CORNER, AND THE HOME WHERE THAT LITTLE GIRL WAS KILLED HAS BEEN GUTTED FOR RENOVATIONS. WE’RE TRYING TO BRING MORE SAFETY TO OUR NEIGHBOR BECAUSE I’M AN ELDERLY AND THERE’S SOME OLDER THAN ME. YOU KNOW, IT’S A LOT OF ELDERLY PEOPLE HERE. AND THEN YOUNG PEOPLE TRYING TO EDUCATE OUR NEIGHBORHOOD THINGS TO WATCH OUT FOR. YOU SEE SOMEBODY THAT YOU KNOW DON’T LIVE HERE. YEAH. REPORT IT. 'Rapid gunfire': 911 calls released after Orange County shooting kills 6-year-old girl, 19-year-old man
We are now hearing the 911 calls that came pouring in from Poppy Avenue in Orlando in August 2023 when two people, including a little girl, were shot and killed in a drive-by shooting. "911, what is the location of your emergency?" a dispatcher said. "I just heard rapid gunfire," a 911 caller said."I don't know if it's Poppy Street or Botany Court. I don't know. I heard a lot of gunshots. I (saw) somebody grab him and pull him and they put him in the car. There is a gun out here on the ground."Five men were arrested for their involvement with the shooting, including Tyrik Omari Nichols, Ricky Bowery, two 17-year-olds and 15-year-old Nico Brown who is being charged as an adult. Now, Poppy Avenue looks very different. "The temperature of the neighborhood, it's very, very quiet,” said longtime resident Susan Williams. “Now people aren’t so jumpy every time they hear a loud noise."Kids can now be seen playing on the streets and cameras are visible on nearly every corner.The home where the little girl was killed has been gutted for renovations."We are trying to bring more safety to our neighborhood,” Williams said. “I am elderly and there are some who are older than me. There are a lot of elderly people here and then young people who are trying to educate our neighborhood on things to watch out for. You see somebody who you know doesn't live here, report it."All five suspects remain in jail. Four of them will have a court hearing on March 28.
