The highly anticipated thriller, Black Phone 2, has finally arrived on digital platforms, and we have an exclusive treat for fans! But first, let's rewind to 2021...
Universal Pictures and Blumhouse Productions, in collaboration with director Scott Derrickson, adapted Joe Hill's chilling short story, 'The Black Phone,' into a gripping film. The story, which revolves around a young boy's encounter with a serial killer, seemed to have a self-contained narrative. However, the film's success, grossing over $160 million worldwide on a $16 million budget, demanded a sequel. And on October 17th, Black Phone 2 hit the big screens.
Fast forward to today, and the sequel has already raked in over $100 million globally. Now, it's available for digital viewing, and to mark this occasion, we present you with an exclusive behind-the-scenes clip! (See above)
Derrickson, along with C. Robert Cargill, penned the screenplay for both films, with the latter also serving as a producer for the sequel, alongside Blumhouse's Jason Blum and Ryan Turek.
The original story, 'The Black Phone,' introduces us to Finney Shaw, a 13-year-old boy who finds himself trapped in a soundproof basement by a deranged killer. The twist? A disconnected phone on the wall connects him to the spirits of the killer's past victims, who are determined to protect Finney from sharing their fate. This short story can be found in Joe Hill's collection, '20th Century Ghosts.'
And now, for the sequel... Black Phone 2 brings back Mason Thames as Finney, Madeleine McGraw as his sister Gwen, Jeremy Davies as their father, and introduces Demián Bichir, Arianna Rivas, and Anna Lore to the cast.
Here's where it gets intriguing: The official synopsis reveals that Ethan Hawke's character, The Grabber, returns from beyond the grave to haunt Gwen through her dreams, leading her to uncover a chilling connection between the killer and her family's past. As Gwen and Finney confront this vengeful spirit, they realize he's even more dangerous in death. But will they survive this sinister encounter?
The digital release of Black Phone 2 includes exciting bonus features, such as deleted scenes, a behind-the-scenes look at the cast's creative process, and a feature commentary with the director himself, Scott Derrickson.
While JoBlo's Ryan Cultrera felt the sequel lacked the freshness of the original, he still rated it a solid 7/10. (You can read his full review here: [link])
