Call of Duty is losing millions of its active players between 2021 to 2022 as confirmed by Activision Blizzard in a recent earnings call.
If you’ve been keeping an eye on Call of Duty in recent months, this news should come as little surprise. Following the launch of Vanguard in 2021, sales were down by 40% year-on-year.
Players are leaving Cod behind
Furthermore, in January 2022 it was reported that Vanguard sales were also down by 36% compared to Black Ops Cold War.
In April this year, an Activision investor report revealed that CoD lost nearly 50 million players within a year. However, it’s been confirmed that those numbers are continuing to decline.
Unfortunately for Activision, a more recent earnings call revealed that between June 30th, 2021 to June 30th, 2022, Call of Duty’s active player count went from 408 million to 361 million. Additionally, between March 30th, 2022 to June 30th alone, 11 million players were lost.
In a nutshell, this means that between the April report from earlier this year and now, active player numbers have not been improving. This is despite themed events for Warzone such as Godzilla vs King Kong.
Can Call of Duty reclaim its players?
It’s worth keeping in mind that CoD still remains one of the most popular video game franchises of all time. This of course includes the free-to-play battle royale, Warzone. However, this news perhaps doesn’t fill Microsoft with as much confidence as it had hoped with its takeover of Activision Blizzard still being finalised.
In related news, despite losing millions of players, it seems Sony is worried about Microsoft owning the rights to the Call of Duty franchise.
Later this year, Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 releases on October 28th, a sequel to the 2019 reboot.
