Keeping promises on renewables, energy efficiency, and methane reduction could prevent nearly 1C of global warming, according to a recent analysis presented at the Cop30 climate summit. This analysis highlights the potential impact of three key climate commitments: increasing renewable energy, enhancing energy efficiency, and reducing methane emissions. If governments fulfill these promises, it could significantly slow down global warming and provide hope for avoiding a climate crisis. The Climate Action Tracker coalition estimates that these measures could reduce projected temperature rises by 0.9C this century, which is a substantial achievement. Achieving these goals, particularly among G20 countries, would result in a substantial reduction in global greenhouse gas emissions, cutting the rate of global warming by a third in the next decade and halving it by 2040. Bill Hare, CEO of Climate Analytics, emphasizes that this could be a game-changer, lowering global warming from 2.6C to about 1.7C by 2035. This aligns closely with the Paris Agreement's goal of limiting global warming to 1.5C above pre-industrial levels. However, deforestation, another critical climate pledge, remains unfulfilled, threatening the world's carbon sinks. Hare stresses the need for immediate action, as these targets have already been negotiated and should be implemented. Pledges to triple renewable energy and double energy efficiency were made at Cop28 in Dubai, with global investment in renewables surpassing $2 trillion last year, more than twice the investment in fossil fuels. China's renewable energy sector has made significant progress, and India achieved its goals five years ahead of schedule through substantial investments in solar and wind energy. Despite the progress in renewables, methane reduction remains a significant challenge. Over 160 governments have pledged to cut methane emissions by 30% by 2030, but emissions have continued to rise, and many countries have underreported their output. Persuading countries to capture methane from oil and gas operations or seal abandoned coalmines and oil wells is also unlikely, with Russia, China, and the US being major contributors. Hare urges governments to start implementing these promises immediately, emphasizing the political challenge of resisting fossil fuel industry pressure and securing financial support for vulnerable countries. At Cop30, governments are expected to address the gap between their current emissions-cutting plans and the 1.5C target, with a new draft text addressing these issues and the transition away from fossil fuels, which was also promised at Cop28. However, this process may face opposition from petrostates and their allies, making it crucial for countries to work together to achieve these climate goals.
