Cloak, Torn: Book 2 [ON HOLD] - Chapter 27 - Page 3 (2024)

"Let's go back to your grandmother's house," Warren said. "That's where we saw her last. She was weak when she vanished. She couldn't have gotten far."

I nodded.

"But how do we track her?"

"You know how your father is very strong?"

"Yes. He was a monster once and he kept his strength afterward."

"I seem to have kept some wolf traits too," Warren said. "I think I might be able to sniff her out."

I mulled that over in silence.

"Where do you think she would have gone?" Warren asked.

"I'm not sure," I said. "I don't think she'd stay in the forest. I'm not sure she'd even stay in Fabel. I'll bet my father will have everyone looking for her."

"Maybe to Balcaroy?" Warren said. "She could hide out in the giant's castle."

"What about the Howling Peaks? I've heard there's dragons up there, and all the giants that are left. Do you think she'd start another Giant War?"

"I don't think there's enough giants left for her to do that," Warren said.

"But she always has some kind of army," I said. "Whenever she comes after us, she hardly ever does her own dirty work."

"So maybe not giants, but she'll try to hide behind another army, won't she? She can't take out Fabel on her own," Warren said.

"Preferably an army that already exists that's easy to control."

"Bears?"

"Too solitary," I said. "What about dragons?"

"They're more self aware. I don't think she could mind control them. And they're like the giants. Not enough of them. What about birds?"

"That could work," I mused.

I thought of a hail of sharp beaks and claws raining down from the sky. I thought of the wounds Jack had gouged into my skin before Jayla blasted him to pieces and shuddered.

"I hope not," I said.

We kept silent almost the entire rest of the ride. It wasn't long before we reached Grandmother's empty house. We dismounted and I showed Warren how to tie his horse up to a tree. His fingers were still a little clumsy, but he got it eventually.

At the scene before us, I flinched. A couple of the townspeople had come to see what had happened, and there were still bodies everywhere. The grass was slick with blood. I concentrated on my boots, trying not to think of my mother.

"You think you can get her scent in all this?" I asked.

"Positive," Warren said, pacing through the battlefield like it was nothing. "Magic leaves its own kind of feeling in the air. It itches my nose like something spicy. It's kind of hard to explain. But," he said, stepping over a body, "Jayla's smells kind of, I don't know...rotted. Like rusted metal. Your grandmother's smells like dust. Your father's smells...kind of like Jayla's actually. Like old blood."

I shivered, following him through the corpses.

"Jayla's magic is all over everything here," Warren continued. "It's just a matter of finding the freshest scent."

"Uh-huh," I said. My eyes were caught on a woman with blood trickling from her cheeks.

I heard Warren's footsteps stop.

"Scarlet?"

"Yeah?"

"Don't look at it."

I looked up at him. He nodded to me.

"Come on. I think I've got it."

"Okay."

Just don't look down.

I tried to ignore the stares and just concentrate on Warren. His brow was furrowed in concentration and his nostrils flared.

"Can you even follow it? She did teleport, didn't she?"

Warren shook his head.

"No, it's a kind of invisibility spell. She didn't have enough energy for a spell like that," Warren said, still sniffing. "In fact, I'm not even sure she could teleport. Isn't that a really high end spell or something?"

"I hope so," I said, looking at the trees.

"I think I've got it," Warren said. "She's going...East. Towards the Dragonclaw Mountains. I think she's on the main road."

"So no giants, and no dragons," I said. "Why would she be going there?"

"Maybe she's getting out of Fabel."

"I can't see her stopping at the mountains-,"

The blood drained from my face.

"Warren."

"What?"

"Rensland. She's going to Rensland. You know, the country who just so happens to have an army and hate our guts? She's going to start a war. A real, actual, war."

"But-but how would she even do that? She can't just mind control an entire kingdom."

"I don't know. Do you think she just wants to be Queen in Rensland?"

"But if she just wanted to be a Queen she would have gone somewhere else a long time ago, right?"

"Yeah..."

I swore under my breath.

"Anyway," Warren said, "it doesn't matter. We still have to kill her."

"Right," I said. "So, to Rensland we go. Ready for another adventure?"

"Let's go get our revenge," Warren growled.
