Disney in the Rain | What to Bring, Ride & More! – BRB Going to Disney (2024)

So you’re headed to Walt Disney World in the beautiful “Sunshine State” huh? Well, I hate to break it to you but we actually get quite a bit of rain here in Florida! Especially in the Summer and during Hurricane Season (June – November).

Don’t panic if there’s a lot of rain in the weather forecast for your trip. You can still have a lot of FUN at Walt Disney World in the rain! Rainy days at Disney are actually some of my personal favorites! Crowds are typically lighter than usual! You just need to ensure that you’re prepared for the rain. Because walking out of an attraction to your stroller soaking wet is never a good time. Ask my kids. HAHA!

What to Wear

What to wear to Disney in the rain is 100% going to come down to personal preference. I’ll share what I choose to wear and you can take from that whatever works for you! 🙂

I will say I don’t recommend wearing long jeans — the bottom halves of your legs may get very wet and stay wet all day long since jeans take so long to dry. I also don’t recommend socks and traditional sneakers. There are some areas of the parks that have very poor drainage (I’m looking at you EPCOT Norway) and you may literally have to wade in puddles if the rain is heavy.

My fanny pack is linked here.

My favorite face masks are linked here.

I like to wear lightweight shorts to the parks in the rain — These are my favorite. I actually like these shorts even when it’s not raining haha! They have either a 3 or 5 inch inseam (I prefer the 5).

I also will choose to wear a short sleeve top. I personally don’t like the feeling of dry fit shirts but if you do, those are a good choice that would dry quickly! I tend to just wear a cotton t-shirt.

As far as shoes go, I am obsessed with these sandals. I wear them 24/7 now and have conquered a few rainy park days in them and they are fantastic! They don’t rub when they’re wet. I’ve never gotten a blister from them. These are hands down my recommended shoe for Walt Disney World. Even if it’s not raining!

One last thing I tend to grab on rainy days at Disney is a hat. My hair is wavy/curly and gets very frizzy in the humidity. After the rain typically comes that humid, wet heat. I keep my hair in a braid(s) with a hat and that keeps everything manageable!

What to Bring

When tackling Disney in the rain, you most definitely need to bring either a raincoat or a poncho. I personally like a traditional raincoat over a disposable poncho. My raincoat is very lightweight and rolls up nice and tight which makes it easy to throw in my backpack.

If you prefer a disposable poncho, I’ve ordered this set for adults and this one for kids. I always keep some ponchos in my car just in case we take a spur of the moment Disney trip and I forget our raincoats.

You may also want to consider including a small travel umbrella in your bag. We don’t use umbrellas much inside the actual park — we prefer our raincoats. However, an umbrella is nice when you’re roaming resorts, walking through the parking lot or to the bus, etc.

If you’re bringing a stroller to the parks you absolutely need a stroller cover. And get a good one that fits your stroller well. There is nothing worse than coming out of a ride and your stroller being absolutely soaked. If you learn just one thing from me, let it be this: ALWAYS COVER YOUR PARKED STROLLER IF THERE IS A CHANCE OF RAIN. Stroller covers also keep your kiddos dry while riding between attractions.

One more thing I want to recommend when visiting Disney in the rain, bring extra face masks. We changed our masks 3 different times on a recent visit in the rain. Once a mask gets wet its harder to breathe through, so having extras on hand is really important. I’d plan for 2 masks a day even when it’s not rainy.

How to Best Tackle a Rainy Day

Rain Friendly Rides

The good thing about Walt Disney World in the rain is that a lot of rides are indoors and most of the queues are under cover as well. This means that most rides at Walt Disney World will stay OPEN even in the rain!

Indoor/Covered Rides at Magic Kingdom

  • Mad Tea Party
  • Under the Sea ~ Journey of the Little Mermaid
  • Walt Disney’s Carousel of Progress
  • Buzz Lightyear’s Space Ranger Spin
  • Haunted Mansion
  • Prince Charming Regal Carrousel
  • The Many Adventures of Winnie the Pooh
  • Space Mountain
  • Peter Pan’s Flight
  • Mickey’s PhilharMagic
  • Pirates of the Caribbean
  • It’s a Small World

Splash Mountain — not indoors but if you’re already getting rained on a little splash won’t hurt!

Indoor/Covered Rides at Hollywood Studios

  • Rise of the Resistance
  • Star Tours
  • Alien Swirling Saucers
  • Toy Story Mania!
  • Lightning McQueen’s Racing Academy
  • Rock ‘n’ Roller Coaster
  • The Twilight Zone Tower of Terror

Indoor/Covered Rides at Animal Kingdom

  • Na’vi River Journey
  • It’s Tough to be a Bug
  • Kilimanjaro Safari (not indoors but usually still operates in rain unless there’s lightning!)

Kali River Rapids — also not indoors but hey if you’re already getting rained on may as well ride the rapids!

  • Frozen Ever After
  • Spaceship Earth
  • The Seas with Nemo & Friends
  • Soarin’ Around the World

There are also rides that will close with rain and/or lightning. Think outside rides like Big Thunder Mountain, Seven Dwarfs Mine Train, Tomorrowland Speedway, Dumbo, Slinky Dog Dash, Test Track, Expedition Everest, etc.

Rides that close in the rain will be updated in the My Disney Experience app as ‘Temporarily Closed’ — like Test Track in the above screenshot. Keep this in mind so you can plan accordingly!

Enjoy Shows

Shows are a great way to stay out of the rain. Especially if the rain is sporadic and not an all-day kind of rain. You can easily dodge a Florida thunderstorm by heading inside for a 20 minute show. Chances are the rain will have stopped by the time the show is over!

There are lots of show options at each park. Enjoy them while staying dry! Bonus points for resting your legs and cooling down in the air conditioning!

Consider a Resort Break

If the rain is really bad and you just need a break from the raincoats and puddles, consider heading to a nearby resort until it passes!

If you’re at the Magic Kingdom, you could easily take the monorail to the Grand Floridian, Polynesian, or Contemporary! Hop off and check out the resort grounds, shops, dining options, etc! This is especially fun at the holidays when the resort lobbies are so beautifully decorated.

At Hollywood Studios or EPCOT? Check out the Boardwalk area resorts or take a trip on the Skyliner to the Riviera, Caribbean Beach, Art of Animation or Pop Century.

From Animal Kingdom you could take the bus to the Animal Kingdom Lodge to explore! The lobby is gorgeous, there’s great dining at the resort and even animals to see too!
