Disney reveals storyline for Tiana’s Bayou Adventure, the ride that’s replacing Splash Mountain (2024)
(NEXSTAR) – Unlike the flume rides at other amusem*nt parks, the Imagineers at Disney insist on creating an intricate storyline to explain why guests are lining up to plunge into some pond water.
Disney’s latest efforts to create just such a storyline were revealed this week, amid the ongoing “reimagining” of its Splash Mountain rides at Disneyland and Disney World.
The rides, as previously announced, are being re-themed after the 2009 animated film “The Princess and the Frog.” The decision was reportedly made following an outcry on social media concerning the original storyline for the attraction, which featured elements from Disney’s controversial 1946 film “Song of the South.”
The new rides — to be known as Tiana’s Bayou Adventure — are instead being presented as a trip to the bayou with Tiana, the protagonist from “The Princess and the Frog,” as she plans a Mardi Gras party for the community.
Guests will also learn that Tiana has grown her restaurant into an entire prepared-foods empire after the events of the film. In doing so, she purchased a large plot of land surrounding a salt mine, where she grows “a wide array of vegetables, herbs and spices for her recipes,” as the story goes.
Despite this, Tiana is apparently missing a crucial ingredient for one of her party recipes — and so she invites visitors to meet her at the company’s HQ to “help with the missing ingredient” for the party, according to Disney Parks.
Disney first announced plans to overhaul its Splash Mountain attractions back in June 2020.
“The retheming of Splash Mountain is of particular importance today,” a representative for Disney Parks wrote in ablog postat the time. “The new concept is inclusive — one that all of our guests can connect with and be inspired by, and it speaks to the diversity of the millions of people who visit our parks each year.”
Splash Mountain at Disney World closed in Jan. 2023. A closing date for Splash Mountain in Disneyland has yet to be announced. Both of the attractions are scheduled to re-debut as Tiana’s Bayou Adventure in late 2024.
Tiana is a fictional character in Walt Disney Pictures' animated film The Princess and the Frog (2009). Created by writers and directors Ron Clements and John Musker and animated by Mark Henn, Tiana, as an adult, is voiced by Anika Noni Rose, while Elizabeth M.
's Bayou Adventure storyline, which "will be all about Tiana after she made her own dreams come true and how we all have the potential to make our dreams a reality," according to the Disney Parks blog.
The wait is almost over for Disney fans hoping to ride the Tiana's Bayou Adventure attraction that's replacing Splash Mountain. Almost four years after Disney announced it would be closing Splash Mountain, the company confirmed that the new Princess and the Frog-inspired attraction will be opening in summer 2024.

(Sept. 9, 2023) — Beginning Oct.16, 2023, Walt Disney World Resort guests visiting EPCOT will be able to voyage into an all-new adventure with Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana.
What is Journey of Water, Inspired by Moana? Whikehart described it as a “self-guided exploration trail on the journey water takes from the skies to the earth and back again.” As you walk through the trail, you'll see water throughout its lifecycle, from rain falling down to vapor rising to the clouds.
The attraction is based on the animated sequences of Disney's 1946 film Song of the South. The ride experience begins with a peaceful outdoor float-through that leads to indoor dark ride segments, with a climactic steep drop into a "briar patch" followed by an indoor finale. The drop is 52.5 feet (16.0 meters).
And even though Tiana's Bayou Adventure is a revamp of Splash Mountain—with the setting transformed to the Louisiana bayou—it will still feature the signature 50-foot drop. Tiana's Bayou Adventure, first announced in 2020, is also taking over Disneyland's former Splash Mountain attraction.
And starting January 9, 2024, guests will see even more changes: All-day Park Hopper access during park hours. No theme park reservations required for date-based tickets. Return of Disney dining plans for Disney Resort hotel guests as part of a package.
