CoComelon causes speech delay?
Our little ones find the animated show CoComelon to be very engaging. They enjoy watching it for hours because of its engaging videos and joyful nursery rhymes. However, some parents no longer find it amusing and beneficial for their kids.
The show’s lack of dialogue has become a concern for many parents. Some parents used social media to raise their concerns regarding the negative effect of CoComelon on their toddlers.
One mum used Tiktok to raise her concern regarding this matter. Mum Sierra is a mother of a 2-year-old child who suffers from speech delay. She claimed that she only realised the negative effect of CoComelon on her child’s development after she switched to a different kid’s program.
“He’s already saying more words and hasn’t had any tantrums,” says Mum Sierra while showing a video of her son watching another kid’s show.
Other parents expressed their concerns and observations of their children after seeing the clip. Other parents found Mum Sierra’s post relatable, stating that their children were not speaking well either.
Some people claim that their children were better off watching a show with actual conversations. They say that it encourages kids a bit more to talk.
“When I cut out CoComelon and put on Ms Rachel, he started bursting out with words. He’s not even two yet so of course these aren’t clear words, but as a mother, I knew what he was trying to say. He started saying ‘oh, oh, knock, knock, mumma, dadda,” another mum shared.“Ever since we cut out CoComelon, I have seen the craziest difference. It blows my mind.”
How CoComelon causes children to throw tantrums
Parents claimed that Cocomelon does not only affect their kid’s speech development. The animated show is also assumed to have an impact on children’s daily outbursts. This mademore parents believe that CoComelon causes speech delay and tantrums.
“Cocomelon is so awful for children. It’s overstimulating, which can delay a lot of developmental milestones,” one mum claimed.
Another parent said that her child had developed an addiction to CoComelon. Her child started to harm herself when she was not allowed to watch the show.
“After a couple of months, I recognised she was becoming increasingly agitated when Coco was not on. She would throw tantrums that would sometimes involve hitting her head with her fist,” the mum shared.
The mum decided to reduce her kid’s time watching CoComelon to just a few minutes before breakfast. She eventually cut off CoComelon and noticed that her child stopped hitting her head and throwing tantrums.
Is it CoComelon or the amount of screen time that affects children?
Because it is suspected that CoComelon causes speech delay and tantrums, Children aged 2 years old and below should have no screen time of the show. The reason for this is that the first two years of life are a period of rapid development.
Furthermore, this age is critical for playing, exploring, and interacting with others. Time away from a screen encourages healthy physical and social development. Children at this age need to learn to socialize and engage with other people in real life.
“There is strong evidence of the negative effects of screen time on children younger than five years,” midwife and child health nurse Jane Barry toldKidspot.
“Very young children also need experiences like play, reading, being active and having moments of quiet, independent play to support their development,” she added.
