EXCLUSIVE: Dr. Nicole Herman is returning to Grey’s Anatomy. Oscar winner Geena Davis, who portrayed the character over a 12-episode arc in 2014-2015, will reprise the role in the penultimate episode of Grey‘s Season 14 on May 10. It’s looking like her return may be connected to Jessica Capshaw’s previously announced departure.
Per the logline for the episode titled “Cold As Ice”, one of Grey Sloan Memorial’s own is seriously injured, making the team reflect on what is truly important to them. Meanwhile, Nicole Herman (Davis) pays a visit to Grey Sloan and talks to Arizona (Capshaw) about an exciting opportunity. (Perhaps the “seriously injured” is the also-exiting Sarah Drew?)
Dr. Nicole Herman was the head of fetal surgery at Grey Sloan Memorial Hospital. When we last saw her in the March 5, 2015 episode, Herman, who had gone blind from surgery to remove a brain tumor, was recovering at the Blind Institute, where she was learning to live her daily life without her eyesight.
Davis won a best supporting actress Oscar for her performance in The Accidental Tourist. She was most recently seen in a recurring role on The Exorcist and in sci-fi drama feature Marjorie Prime.
Davis’ Grey’s episode will air Thursday, May 10 at 8 PM on ABC.
The news of Davis’ return came hours after Capshaw and Drew shot their final episode for Grey’s. Shonda Rhimes paid tribute to both actresses in an Instagram post Thursday.
