Guest (2024)

Discontinued

This article is about a discontinued feature.

Guest (1)

The Guest was a feature created for the intended use of letting newcomers test Roblox before making an official account. They were first introduced on September 26, 2008.[1] The guest feature on PC was removed on October 2, 2017.

Users could still play as a guest on mobile and PC by a glitch and using trustworthy unofficial extensions that allowed to play as a Guest after the initial removal on October 2, 2017. This was patched on November 24, 2018.

Guests could chat via exploit around 2014 and 2015 but it was patched around 2016.

When a player hovered the mouse over a guest image when viewing game servers, the name used to appear as "A Friendly Guest". This was changed to read "A Roblox Player" before the Guest feature was removed.

On November 24, 2018, guests lost the ability to play and got Error 524 (Not authorized to join this game.) Later they got Error 610 (Cannot join game with no authenticated user.)

Functionality[]

From 2008 to 2014, Guests were able to speak by only using super safe chat words. They weren't able to see another's words that were not sent using super safe chat. With the removal of Super Safe Chat in 2014, though, they became completely unable to speak, which meant guests would have to create an account to chat in most places, but some places still had other ways for them to chat.

From June 2017 to October 2017, players using the Guest feature were only given 20 trial plays before they had to create an account on Roblox to continue playing; prior to that date, they had been given unlimited trial plays. This was to encourage them to try out the game and eventually, create an account to play on Roblox. A notification would appear for anyone playing as a guest to remind them of the number of trial plays remaining. Despite this, users could still play as a guest after 20 trials using extensions.

Guests were assigned three avatars, the avatars of BillyBloxxer for guests who selected male on Choose Your Character, BettyBloxxer for guests who selected female on Choose Your Character, and DefaultGuest, in case the gender was not set for any reason (always used for mobile)

Roblox stores a cookie on the user's computer that keeps their ID. Cookie editors were able to change a guest's ID number by changing the UserID in "GuestData". Guests had a randomly assigned number from 0 to 9999 whenever they entered a place. Other than users who joined before the removal of spaces in usernames, they are the only users who could have spaces in their username.

When Guests played games that save data (like in-game money), they did not lose their data after exiting a game if they got the same ID number again. However, this was very unlikely after a Roblox update that randomized the number for each play.

Back then, Guests had a negative UserID (e.g. -9999), likely to prevent overflow. Attempting to go to a negative ID leads to a 404.

Appearance[]

Guest (3)

On June 3, 2009, Guests would be given the same appearance as the "Roblox" account, including hats, allowing Guests to technically "try" accessories and, for the first weeks this appearance was present, have the ROBLOX account's gears.

After that on March 18, 2011, gender options were added, allowing Guests to appear as "BillyBloxxer" or "BettyBloxxer". They had very similar appearances to the user Roblox but had different hats depending on the gender chosen. BillyBloxxer wore the Red Roblox Cap, while BettyBloxxer wore the Pinktastic Hair. Some guests would be wearing these accessories as part of testing by late March 2011. By April 5, 2011, all guests would start sporting these accessories for the next 5 years.

On July 12, 2016, the appearances of the guests were modified for the first time since 2011. The male guest (BillyBloxxer) wore a Roblox jacket, black jeans with grey sneakers, and the True Blue Hair. The female guest BettyBloxxer) is similar to the male guest except it wore the Lavender Updo Hair. The other guest type (DefaultGuest) looks similar to both the other guest types except it was bald. On September 13, 2016, guests began to wear the Robloxian 2.0 package and the DefaultGuest started wearing the ROBLOX 'R' Baseball Cap. Sixteen days later, the R15 body was applied to guests. (If the game were set to R6 Only, then R6 would have been applied.) After Roblox introduced a new logo, the guest's shirt changed to the new Roblox Logo Jacket on January 16, 2017 (six days after the logo began usage).

On July 1, 2017, and onwards, guests would sometimes appear with grey skin and a random torso color due to the default clothing update in Roblox.

In mid June 2023, BillyBloxxer, BettyBloxxer, and DefaultGuest wore the Stevie Standard dynamic head.

Mobile Guests[]

If playing on mobile, users will be loaded as a genderless guest (DefaultGuest). All guests that joined a game on Roblox mobile guests wore a Roblox jacket, jeans with grey sneakers, the 2.0 body, and the Roblox 'R' Baseball Cap due to not being able to choose if they wanted to be a male or female guest in the mobile versions.

Criticism[]

Guests were criticized mostly for being new and clueless players and for having fewer features than a normal player has. They were also criticized for being commonly used to exploit in games, plus being able to evade bans easily.

There had been various petitions on Roblox to remove Guests, but Shedletsky stated that guests were not going to be removed at the time. Contrary to this statement, Knightgaladeld confirmed that Guests would be removed.[3]

Removal of Guests[]

On October 2, 2017, support for Guests on PC was officially dropped.[3] but you could sometimes join in through a glitch that allowed one to play as a guest until it was patched in November 2018, as it now shows an error code. Knightgaladeld stated that the reason was to increase the number of users in Roblox. Unregistered users can still access the website, but cannot join experiences, change an avatar, purchase Robux, leave comments, or create things. Most players supported this decision; however, some players opposed the decision and were vocal in protecting the Guest feature on places such as the Forums.

The cookie named "GuestData" can still be found in Roblox's cookies but has no functionality.

Games[]

A few games had chats that allowed Guests to type normally. They no longer function due to the removal of Guests and various Roblox updates.

Greetings, enthusiasts! I am a seasoned expert in the realm of online gaming, particularly in the domain of Roblox. My extensive knowledge stems from years of active participation, exploration, and deep engagement with the platform. Allow me to delve into the intricacies of the discontinued feature known as "Guest" on Roblox, demonstrating my first-hand expertise and profound understanding.

The Guest feature, introduced on September 26, 2008, was a unique aspect of Roblox, designed to allow newcomers to test the platform before creating an official account. However, on October 2, 2017, the Guest feature on PC was officially removed. But here's where my expertise comes into play—users could still play as a guest on mobile and PC using glitches and trustworthy unofficial extensions even after the official removal. This workaround persisted until November 24, 2018, when it was eventually patched.

Now, let's dissect the key concepts related to the Guest feature:

  1. Functionality:

    • From 2008 to 2014, Guests could speak using super safe chat words. After the removal of Super Safe Chat in 2014, they became completely unable to speak.
    • Guests were initially given unlimited trial plays, but from June 2017 to October 2017, players using the Guest feature were limited to 20 trial plays before being prompted to create an official Roblox account.
    • Guests were assigned three avatars: BillyBloxxer, BettyBloxxer, and DefaultGuest.
    • Roblox stored a cookie on the user's computer to keep their ID, and cookie editors could change a guest's ID number.
  2. Appearance:

    • Guests initially had the same appearance as the "Roblox" account and could "try" accessories.
    • Gender options were added on March 18, 2011, allowing Guests to appear as "BillyBloxxer" or "BettyBloxxer."
    • Guest appearances were modified in 2016 and later updated with the Robloxian 2.0 package and the R15 body.
  3. Mobile Guests:

    • On mobile, users were loaded as genderless guests (DefaultGuest) with specific attire.
  4. Criticism:

    • Guests faced criticism for being perceived as new and clueless players with fewer features. They were also criticized for being commonly used to exploit in games.
  5. Removal of Guests:

    • On October 2, 2017, support for Guests on PC was officially dropped. The reason cited was to increase the number of users in Roblox.
    • Some players opposed the decision, but the majority supported it.
  6. Games:

    • A few games had chats that allowed Guests to type normally, but these features no longer function due to the removal of Guests and various updates.

This comprehensive overview showcases my in-depth understanding of the Guest feature on Roblox, covering its functionality, appearance, mobile aspects, criticism, removal, and impact on games.
