Me: I think you have something of mine.
2022: I believe not, miss.
Me: Yes, you do. Don't deny it!
2022: Well then, you'll have to wait for a year to get it from me.
Me: No. I'm smarter than that.

My least favourite cover in the Heartstopper series, and as I found out, my least favourite book. The cover is cute - when you actually work out what you're looking at. It doesn't work well from a distance.

This book seemed to start right where Alice got really really busy making the TV show, and I think it suffered as a result. The art style changed, the lines thinner and the backgrounds less detailed to the point where I couldn't work out where they were sometimes.

I had a real issue with the background panels when Nick got to Leeds (my home town), because for the most part I couldn't work out where or what the background was, and the most detailed panel of the market felt copied from a photograph with no research, placing Nick and his friends in the middle of one of the busiest roads in town.

This is the first volume, as a graphic novel only reader, where I felt that it didn't work as well with the long wait between books. This truly feels like a filler novel, which is a shame after waiting over 2 years for it and knowing it'll be at least another year before the final book. With this series being so short, I really want every book to be the best it can be.

Had the story been as strong as Volume 4, this wouldn't have been an issue. But I felt that Nick and Charlie's friends were almost fully pushed to the back this volume, and there was an emotional disconnect with Nick and Charlie themselves. They're also apart for a good chunk of the story.

There's a solid moment at the end of the book during the fun fair where Charlie and Tori connect, the art is bastly improved and Alice clearly had more time to design it and make it, well, good. I've really enjoyed the appearances of Michael the last couple of books too.
