How Long Should The Hair Be For Waxing? | Bare Necessities (2024)

Going for a bikini wax can feel a bit scary, especially if it’s your first one. If you’ve taken the plunge into your new lifestyle, you may be nervous. A big question many first-time waxers have: what do you need to do in advance of your waxing service?

The good news is: not much needs to be done for the waxed area in advance! However, there is one important thing that you have to consider before going for your waxing appointment: the hair.

Whether you’re going for a simple bikini line touch up or a full-on Brazilian wax, there’s always one question you need to think about before going in for your waxing service: how long should hair be to wax? There’s also a big dilemma: You need the hair long enough so that the strip wax can grab ahold of it- but if it’s too long it can cause more pain than normal.

A good rule of thumb is to let the hair grow to at least ¼ of an inch long, or the length of an eyelash, before going for your bikini wax. Allowing hair growth to this length will let the waxing remove all the hair without any patchiness or remaining hair follicles. You can simply enjoy your post wax smooth skin, hit the beach and live your best life.

Additionally, don’t feel like you have to decide on your own- If you have any questions about the hair before going in, or don’t feel like getting out the ruler to measure your hair, you can always contact your spa in advance and ask them! We are used to clients who need a bit more information.

If you want to make sure your bikini line is looking solid for the greatest amount of time, follow these tips after your waxing appointment:

1. After 24 hours, gently exfoliate the bikini area regularly. Regular exfoliation will help prevent ingrown hairs and help remove the dead skin. It also will leave your skin feeling smooth and silky.

2. Avoid shaving between waxes- even if it’s tempting. Stick to one hair removal method for your pubic hair and don’t change it. Shaving regularly after a waxing won’t allow for the hairs to grow to the length they need to be to be waxed and could lead to razor burn or ingrown hairs.

3. If your wax was particularly painful, use a numbing cream to take the edge off. You can always ask your esthetician for recommendations on good brands or contact your salon if you’re finding the pain lasts longer than 48 hours. This can also help in advance- apply some numbing cream on the area to be waxed roughly 30 minutes before your appointment.

How Long Between Brazilian Waxes?

So you’ve had your Brazilian wax, and are feeling fantastic. You’ve followed our tips and have taken all the steps to prevent ingrown hairs and avoided shaving between waxes to let the hair grow long enough. How long should you go between Brazilian waxes?

The annoying answer: you can only know how long between Brazilian waxes depending on your particular pubic hair. On average, you can be expected to have the hairs grow back long enough to be waxed from 3-6 weeks after your first appointment. If your hair is particularly thick, it could grow quicker; if you’ve decided to not have everything gone and are leaving a small strip of hair (the “landing strip”), that could also mean you have to wait until all of the hair is long.

Once you’ve spent some time waxing regularly, you’ll have a better idea of what works for your hair specifically. If you have particularly sensitive skin, it’s a good idea to wait a bit longer. It’s much better to have hair too long than have it be too short- and your esthetician will have no problem trimming it if necessary.

Now that the ins and outs of hair length have been figured out, book an appointment today!
