Yes, we love the sunshine and the heat that comes along with it. Yes, we love drinking G&Ts outside after work. No, we don't love the effect it's having on our gut.

If you've noticed that you've been experiencing increased bloating, wind or any other of the symptoms of an upset stomach there is actually a very good reason for it.

'High temperatures can actually cause the bad bacteria in our guts to expand resulting in an increased likelihood of gastrointestinal infections and can trigger or worsen symptoms such as diarrhoea and bloating.

'When we are exposed to higher temperatures, our bodies redirect our blood flow to help us maintain our body temperature, sending our blood to the skin, in order to allow the heat to be cooled down and escape. This redirection of blood flow can affect our gastrointestinal tracts, as our digestive system needs the right amount of blood to function optimally,' explains nutritional therapist Clarissa Lenherr.

'Additionally, heat is a form of stress on our bodies and one of the systems most affected by stress is the digestive system.'

How to maintain good gut health in the heat

1. Try drinking a refreshing kombucha which is full of probiotics to boost your good gut bacteria.

2. Try to eat easy to digest foods and avoid heavy and rich foods that need large amounts of energy to be digested. Think salads, summer soups and juices.

3. All our body systems need appropriate hydration to function properly, including the digestive system. When we are thirsty, one of the first things our digestive system does is signal to our brains that we need to drink. However, many people misconstrue this signal as a hunger pang. Listen to these cues and drink more water to satisfy your digestive systems signals.

4. Additionally, when we are exposed to long term high temperatures, we need to compensate by consuming more water than normal. Try eating refreshing foods alongside drinking more water to help hydrate your body. Think of watermelon, cucumber, strawberries and celery.
