Is there a limit to a personal check amount? (1)

The short answer is that you can write personal checks for as much as you want if you have the money in your account, and the receiver can accept the amount. However, this has many considerations, which we’ll detail in this article.

Personal checks depends on your bank

While your bank may not limit high-value checks, there may be some fine print to read.

For example:

  • The money isn’t available immediately after check deposits since banks must process the transaction.
  • The Federal Reserve requires that banks make at least $100 from the deposit available to withdraw as cash within one business day, and some banks offer $200. If your bank is within the same “processing region” as the other bank, the rest of the deposit should be available by the third business day, excluding any account issues.
  • If the banks are outside of the “processing region,” banks have up to six business days to make the full deposit available to you.
  • If you deposit checks that add up to $5,000 in one day, banks may extend their hold schedules beyond the six-day maximum.
  • Banks can enforce further delays if you have an overdraft history, or the bank thinks the funds can’t be collected from the other account.

Caution with high-value personal checks

Sometimes, people that write you a big check don’t have enough funds in his/her account to cover it, causing the check to “bounce.” You could be charged a nonsufficient funds fee (NSF fee) and owe the bank an amount of money equal to the face value of the check.

This could get tricky if your bank didn’t realize there were nonsufficient funds for weeks, even if the deposit was fully available. If you have already spent the money, you’ll have to pay it back, in addition to possible NSF and overdraft fees.

While you can deposit checks over $10,000 at any bank or ATM, cashing this requires the bank to report it to the Internal Revenue Service (IRS), a rule for all cash transactions over $10,000.

If you need a substantial check, you may also want to consider cashier’s checks that the bank guarantees.
