Julia Whitman (formerly Selena Finnie) is the late mother of Monse Finnie, Hayden Whitman and Cooper Whitman.
History[]
When Monse was three years old, Julia left her with her father to pursue the life of a high class woman and kept her first family and her Hispanic roots a secret since she was embarrassed of both. Monse kept what little belongings she had left behind in a show box in her closet.
She is first introduced in Chapter Four when Monse is leaving Rose’s house and Julia is arriving at the house with her two young children.
Later in Chapter Eight, Monse poses as a babysitter and watches her two half-siblings under a fake alias. Monse questions Julia about herself which leaves her believing that Julia truly wasn’t her mother until Chapter Thirteen where Julia admits to being Monse’s mother. Monse ends up having a relationship with her mother and later moving in with her until the two get into it when Monse learned that Julia told all her friends that Monse’s father abused her. An outraged Monse confronts her for her lies and realizes that she left her and her father for being black and not high class like herself, her new family and her peers. Monse asks her if she would’ve stayed had Monse been born looking white but Julia has no response. Monse then stormed off and they never see each other again.
In Chapter Twenty-Four, Monse finds out that her mother committed suicide from all of the trauma.
