Mr. Tran was the father of Prophet Kevin Tran.
Background
Mr. Tran was married to Linda Tran, by who he became the father of a boy named Kevin. When Kevin was still a baby, Mr. Tran died of unknown causes. He owned a ring which was kept by Kevin as it was the only thing Kevin had left of him.
Following Kevin's death at the hands of Gadreel, Kevin's ghost remained bound to his father's ring, which was among his possessions. In hopes of freeing Kevin, Sam and Dean Winchester insisted that Linda destroys the ring, while warning her of Kevin becoming a vengeful spirit.
Linda objected, since she wished to take care of her son as was her duty as his mother.
It is unknown if Linda ever destroyed the ring as Kevin later decides to stay in The Veil. He remains there for a whole two years until God decides to intervene and send him to Heaven.
