Dennis L. Mitchell, 74, Bismarck; formally of Beulah and Bowman, went to his eternal home the morning of February 25, 2022. Dennis fought hard through all the stages of dementia and is now finally at peace.

Dennis was the third of four boys born to James and Lou Ella Mitchell. Dennis and his younger brother, Mert, shared the same birthday of November 7th. Dennis’ hero was his older brother, Russ, for serving our country. Dennis always enjoyed his phone conversations with Russ over the years. Growing up north of Rhame on the family ranch adjacent to the Badlands of North Dakota, Dennis had a lifelong love of the beauty and peace of the outdoors.

Dennis married his high school sweetheart, Irene Kay Kulseth, on October 22, 1965. During their 56- year marriage, Dennis and Irene raised three kids: Raymond Grant, Rory James, and Randine Lee. His pride and joy were his kids and grandkids! Dennis and Irene celebrated 50 years of marriage with many friends and family in 2015. Dennis was a very devoted husband. He would write a note to Irene every morning expressing his love and always wishing her a great day. Together, they had seven grandchildren and six great-grandchildren. Dennis loved when the grandkids would come stay in the summer so he could take them camping or to Medora. He shared the love of baseball and basketball with his grandson, Evan, and enjoyed attending any of Evan's activities.

Dennis worked during his lifetime as a ranch hand, a gas station attendant, seismographer and 35 years as a heavy equipment operator at Gascoyne Knife River and Beulah Dakota Westmoreland. Dennis’ co-workers called him “Mitch.” Dennis’ joy was playing softball with the Knife River teams and traveling to different tournaments. He was the pitcher of the team and always enjoyed the social time with his co-workers.

You knew you were going to have a good time with lots of laughs when Denny was around! To his family, he was “Lefty” from the duo, “Poncho and Lefty.” He always loved a good joke, classic country music, spending time with his family and neighbors on the patio, playing ball with his dog, Scooby, and sitting around the firepit.

Dennis was a Ford pickup man, purchasing seven Ford pickups from Wayne over the years. He loved camping throughout ND and fishing on Lake Sakakawea with his nephew, Dusty and the river with his niece, Erin. He was famous for his oyster stew. Deer hunting was the highlight of his year, especially hunting with his brother, Mert! His final deer hunt was with his nephew, Trevor. Dennis shot a big buck right below the “home place” north of Rhame and he was so proud of that buck and the fact that he got it near the “home place.”

Dennis should have had stock in vanilla ice cream, his favorite food. In his final stages of dementia, he knew the staff at Missouri Slope would give him as much ice cream as he wanted! Dennis was one of the good guys. He was a loving husband and devoted dad, grandpa, uncle, son, brother, and friend. God broke the mold when he made Denny!

Preceding him in death are his parents, James and Lou Ella Mitchell, an infant brother, son Raymond Grant, his brother Mert, and granddaughter Chelsea.

His loved ones who will miss him greatly: his wife, Irene, Bismarck; son, Rory Mitchell, Bismarck; daughter Randi Fuchs (Bryon)Bismarck, brother Russell Mitchell (Darlene), Medora; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, 7 grand kids and 6 great grand kids, nieces and nephews, cousins, friends, former neighbors and co-workers, and the staff at Missouri Slope Care Center
