Robert (Bob) Earnest Shuck, age 96, passed away peacefully on February 18th, 2024, at Fallon County Hospital in Baker, MT. He will be remembered for his blue-eyed smile, insatiable work ethic and his love of family and community. His idea of heaven would be a continuous pinochle tournament, so we are sure he is playing right now.

Bob was born on April 12th, 1927, above the Dakota Western Bank in Rhame, ND, to Gladys Capitola Fowler Shuck and Earnest William Shuck. He was the beloved middle child among his siblings Wyman, Clifford, Margaret, Elizabeth (Liz), and Donald.

Bob's childhood in Rhame was shaped by the supportive community that taught him invaluable skills, from riding horses to farming and playing pinochle. Inspired by neighbor and cowboy Hack Rosenthall, Bob dreamt of being a cowboy as a young child.

At 18, Bob joined the army, proudly serving and later becoming a dedicated member of the Rhame Legion Club for 78 years. While being deployed to Germany he wondered if he would ever make it there and back when the boat tipped over and they had to wait for two days to get pulled upright. Post-service, Bob worked in California before returning to North Dakota, contributing to the Rhame Review newspaper, working with local farmers, and ranching. His endeavors led him to work at the Farmers Union and later operate the grater for Melvin Miller. Bob became the proud owner of Shuck's Gas and Oil serving farmers and ranchers in ND, SD and MT meeting many good friends along the way. Bob was very proud to own his own business and he loved helping his community. Throughout his journey, he remained committed to farming and ranching, eventually securing a position with Standard Oil /Shucks Gas & Oil. He left a legacy of buying uniforms for everyone from kids t-ball to the old pro teams. When asked to purchase an ad, he responded, “My ad? It's right there on the back of those uniforms.”

On December 10, 1954, Bob married Elizabeth (Betty) O'Donnell, and they raised their family in Rhame. Bob was very proud of his children, attending their basketball games and teaching them hard work and responsibility on the farm. His grandchildren brought out his gentle side, and his great-grandchildren even more.

Bob never met a person he did not know, no matter where they traveled. Bob and Betty enjoyed visiting friends and family across the country and made several trips to Australia and New Zealand. Their home was always open, especially during Christmas, where friends and strangers alike were welcomed with warmth. Bob's love for hunting, fishing, and community sports was evident through his active involvement in the Rhame Saddle Club, the Community Club, the Rhame Fire Department, and serving as Rhame's mayor.

Bob Shuck is preceded in death by his wife, Betty; son, Doug; parents Gladys and Earnest; and siblings Wyman, Clifford, Donald, and Margaret. He is survived by his daughters Cindy Sanford, Bismarck, ND, and Lisa Shuck (Leo Canteri), Melbourne, Australia; son Sid Shuck (Jules), Windsor, CO; grandchildren Karmen Wahl (Billy), Bismarck, ND, Kyle Sanford (Delaney), Anoka, MN, Megan Miller (Eric), Fargo, ND, Rhys Osborne (Jenn), San Diego, CA, Colby Shuck, Windsor, CO and Kelsey Green, Guthrie, OK; along with great-grandchildren, Scarlett, William, Oliver and baby Miller, Lexi and Brantley; and his dear friend, Jean Buchholz. Bob's legacy lives on in the hearts of those who miss him dearly.

To honor Bob's memory, the family kindly requests that, instead of flowers, you consider making a donation to the Tuttle Cemetery in Rhame. The family would like to thank Superior Care Villa in Baker, MT for their care and attention to their dad.
