One Piece: Sanji's Worst Defeats (2024)

Sanji is an extremely powerful fighter, but he failed to get the better of these One Piece characters.

One Piece: Sanji's Worst Defeats (1)

Sanji is one of the most well-known One Piece characters. Sanji joined the Straw Hat Pirates in the Baratie arc after Luffy refused his refusal. Initially, Sanji didn't want to join the crew because he felt indebted to Zeff, but thankfully, he changed his mind. Aside from his culinary skills, Sanji is also an incredible fighter.

He has fought some very powerful One Piece characters and defeated most of them. However, there have been instances where Sanji has been unable to get the better of his opponents. Unlike the other members of the Monster Trio, most of Sanji's defeats were because of his principles.

7 Vs Enel

Enel was the main antagonist of the Skypiea arc. He was an egoistic individual who solely cared about getting more and nothing else. Enel used his Goro Goro no Mi and Kenbunshoku Haki to monitor the movements of every person on Skypiea. The combination of these two things made it almost impossible to defeat him.

Except for Luffy, no Straw Hat could match Enel's might. Sanji tried his best to do some damage to Enel, but it was to no avail. The god of Skypiea effortlessly defeated Sanji, and the latter would have died if he didn't have a good amount of resilience.

6 Vs Aokiji

Before the time skip, Aokiji was still a member of the Marines. Unlike the other Marines, Aokiji was rather easygoing and didn't get offended easily. When the Straw Hats encountered the Admiral for the very first time, he told them that it was a risk to be associated with Nico Robin.

Luffy, Zoro, and Sanji tried attacking the Admiral to stop him, but they couldn't even scratch him. Aokiji took pity on them and spared them; otherwise, he could have easily destroyed the entire crew. It was the first time that the Straw Hats were thoroughly outclassed by their enemy.

5 Vs Black Maria

One Piece: Sanji's Worst Defeats (4)

Black Maria was one of the Tobi Roppo, which meant that she was one of Kaido's stronger underlings. She possessed an Ancient Zoan-type Devil Fruit that allowed her to turn into a Rosamygale grauvogeli at will. During the Onigashima raid, Black Maria laid a trap for Sanji, and the latter foolishly fell for it.

Sanji was captured and beaten to a pulp by Black Maria. He should have avoided the trap, but once again, his principles cost him dearly. Fortunately, Sanji could rely on Nico Robin for help. She saved him from being slaughtered by the Tobi Roppo. If Robin had not defeated Black Maria, things could have gone horribly wrong for the Straw Hats.

4 Vs Doflamingo

One Piece: Sanji's Worst Defeats (5)

In Dressrosa, the Straw Hats decided to split into two groups to carry out different tasks. One half of the crew remained in Dressrosa, while the other half, led by Sanji, decided to head for Zou. While Sanji's group was near Green Bit, Doflamingo appeared out of nowhere and began attacking the ship.

The Shichibukai would have destroyed the Thousand Sunny and killed the crew members on board if not for Sanji's timely intervention. Sanji managed to stop Doflamingo, but the latter's power proved too overwhelming. Sanji was defeated, and Chopper had to bandage him. However, Sanji gave Law enough time to recover and attack Doflamingo.

3 Vs Vinsmoke Judge

Sanji's past has always haunted him. He was abused by his father and his siblings because he was not emotionless and didn't have the same level of strength as them. Sanji took after his mother, who was a kind person. After running away from his home, Sanji ended up with Zeff, and together they started Baratie.

Sanji then joined the Straw Hats, and he happily traveled with them. However, the ghosts of Sanji's past came back to haunt him in Zou. Sanji had to go back to his family, where he briefly clashed with his father. Sanji would have won the fight, but he chose not to, as the lives of his friends and Zeff were at stake.

2 Vs Kalifa

One Piece: Sanji's Worst Defeats (7)

During the Enies Lobby arc, Sanji's first opponent was Kalifa, who was a talented assassin. There was a considerable difference between their skills, and Sanji could have easily defeated her. However, Zeff taught him not to ever lay a hand on a woman. So Sanji tried to avoid Kalifa's attacks throughout the fight.

He tried his best not to get hit, but the CP9 agent proved her mettle and eventually overwhelmed the Straw Hat. Many fans did not like how Sanji stuck to his principles even when the crew was in a dire situation.

1 Vs. Bartholomew Kuma

One Piece: Sanji's Worst Defeats (8)

The Straw Hats had to fight Bartholomew Kuma twice, and both times they were humbled by the Shichibukai. Most fans remember how Kuma separated the entire crew on Sabaody Archipelago, and for this reason, his involvement in the Thriller Bark arc is often overlooked. The Shichibukai was sent to Moria's ship to kill Monkey D. Luffy.

The Straw Hats were completely exhausted after defeating Moria. Sanji tried to stand up to Kuma, but he couldn't make a difference. During the Sabaody Archipelago arc, Sanji was yet again powerless to do anything against Kuma. He could only watch helplessly and wait for his turn to be sent away.
