I think my 'totally existent' kids would LOVE this anime, as it tells a lot about friendship, loyalty, fictional history, and character development. It also has a lot of action and comedy which I am 100% sure would be entertaining for Kids.

This review is in regards of both the manga and the anime. I see some kids and adults bringing up 4kids but they lost the rights back in 2006 so any English dub you find online is going to be the funimation versions. The Funimation dub and the Japanese with English subtitles are both uncut and unedited. There's less cursing in the manga than the anime. One of the early episodes in the anime Luffy is protecting a dogs treasure from a hairy man and his lion and because the hairy man and his lion destroyed the dogs treasure Luffy decided to kick their "a$$". In the manga, because they destroyed the dogs treasure he decided to "clobber" them instead. There is some cursing and violence. There's bloody scenes but nothing gory. In the anime the sexualization of female characters is extremely tamed at first. Starting in the 200's and later it gradually gets worse to the point where as an adult you're rolling your eyes. The manga, on the other hand keeps the sexualization tamed. There are moments but in comparison to the anime it's as if you're looking at two different genres of the same series. If you pay attention to who are the animators for which episodes then over time you'd be able to tell if the animation is going to focus on the sexualization of the female characters. As for unrealistic body proportions, I'd say this is true for both the male and female characters but it works due to the art style. Even though the viz translations early on are kind of meh due to them being similar to 4kids translations since they were both being done at the same time, I'd still recommend the manga over the anime and I'm saying this as someone that prefers animation over still drawings. The translations in the English version of the manga does get better as the series progresses, however, any mistakes in translations early on are kept to keep consistency within the series.Now, the manga is a lot less sexualized than the anime, but it's more graphic in terms of violence than the anime. The anime also cuts out characters flipping another character off while the manga shows it. There's also more blood and not more violence but the way the violence is carried out is a bit more extreme in the manga. So, in the manga and the anime the violence/sexualization is flipped when it comes to what is more prominent. Also, in the manga, you get Q&A from the author himself from readers at the time that the volumes were published in Japan. Since the questions are generally coming from young teenager boys or even pre-teen boys in Japan you'll get some sexual curiosity questions. Like, what are Nami's body proportions, or since Luffy can stretch due to being rubber does that mean that his privates can also stretch. Due to all of that,I'd have to say that this series is for 13+ for a general audience but ultimately you'd have to decide based on your knowledge of how mature your own children are if you want to let them watch it at a younger age. Lastly, for adults, there are a lot of themes and messages that will go over even teenagers heads and even if it doesn't go over their heads it will hit them differently as a teen than it does as an adult. What I've enjoyed out of this series as time progresses is that when I was a teenager it had things that garnered my attention that today as adult I couldn't care less about and themes and messages I didn't care about as a teen I am heavily invested into now. It brings up messages about human trafficking/slaves, corrupt government, racism, sexism, old money, poverty, the values of how both halves live and how there are good and bad from both. It really brings in positive messages about how it doesn't matter if your circ*mstances are good or bad as that doesn't define who you are as a person. It doesn't matter what sex you are, what race you are, what your sexual orientation is, what your gender identity is . . . the world is gray and what you are does not define who you are. For some people that may be a negative message but to me that is a positive message.

One piece contains constant sexual references and gives women high expectations on how to look. The women in the series have very large breast sizes and hardly any appropriate clothing after the time skip. It is really only for older audiences and is definitely not appropriate for children. For girls it sets unachievable expectations for breast and waists, and for boys it gives them access to explicit images and promotes violence. It disgusts me that shows like this are even created. I would recommend a show like Naruto or dragon ball which is more funnier, action packed, and includes positive female and male role models.

My first review! Here I go!Personally, I think that this is one of if not the best anime out there. As for who it's appropriate for, you really just have to know you kids.Violence: This anime is based off the manga of the same name. Since it is a shounen (Japanese for boy or young boy) anime/manga, there is going to be quite a bit of fighting and violence. Yes, there is quite a bit of blood, specifically in the fights that have Zoro (the swordsmen) as one of the participants. However, the violence is never without purpose. The main pirates, the Straw Hat Pirates, never just go out and pick fights with anyone they meet. There is always a reason. In fact, Luffy's role model told him that fighting isn't always the answer "You can pour booze on me. You can spit on me. You can punch me. I'll probably just laught that stuff off. But if you hurt a friend of mine...That is something I cannot forgive!"Sexual Content: while there hasn't been much as of yet (Season 2, Fourth voyage coming soon as I type this) There will be a bit coming up. I know this because I watch the Japanese version and can tell which parts are going to be dubbed next. While the only thing that pops up is a bit of revealing clothing, in the Arabasta arc, there is a bath house scene. In Japan, bathing is a social event, but never do men and women bathe together. There is a separate section for each sex. A few hundred episodes later, there is the Amazon Lily Arc, where Luffy is sent to the Island of Women. Nothing happens, but that may be someting that parents will want to watch out for.Language: In Japan, there aren't relaly any ways to curse. Instead, they just say things in a disrespectful manner. That doesn't have as much of an impact in America, so they add in a bit of language to convey the same meaning. Words such as @$$, h311, d@mn, and cr@p are used somewhat frequently. Sanji the chef uses cr@p/py fairly often (in Japan he says kuso which translates literally to excrement).Product Placement: Absolutely none.Drinking, Drugs, or Smoking: They are pirates, after all, so drinking is to be expected. Sanji does smoke quite a bit, and a few other characters smoke cigars, but that's it. In the Amazon Lily arc, Luffy eats a mushroom that turns out to be a special "Growing out of your body mushroom" that forces other mushrooms to grow out of his body, almost killing him. Remember kids, shrooms are bad for you!Messages: Each arc has their own villain with their own set of bad values which are then stomped upon by Luffy and the rest of the Straw Hats. Example: Buggy says that gold, jewels, and other various shineys are the only kinds of treasure and that nothing else could ever be of value. Luffy's straw hat disagrees.Role Models: Yes, Nami is a theif. We've established that. It is stressed that while her kleptomania has come in handy, it is the result of years of trying to pay back basically a mob boss to save her village. Kids don't have that problem. Usopp is a liar. The reason the Straw Hats have to fight so hard in the Captain Kuro arc is because of Usopp's lying, basically making it the boy who cried pirate.Overall: One of the better animes out there. while there is quite a bit of violence, some language, and some tobacco and alcohol usage, the show in general is one of the best, especially if you like plot twists.

My kid who is 10 years old found this on crunchyroll and asked me if he could watch it and I watched the first episode and got ADDICTED sometimes the girls do wear bikinis but that’s not a big deal u go to the beach and there is plenty of people in bikinis they do swear but not a lot it also teaches ur kids that anyone can be friends even if they started out as a rival.

One piece has become really f*cking long over the years, and things have changed a bit. First of all, some of the new stuff is TV-14 because of an increase in violence or swearing. Now also, I see kids watching Deadpool nowadays so I don't think this change means anything.

One Piece is a modern odyssey. It has important and moral themes that are done in such a way that encourages thinking and forming your own opinions. It is, for the most part, an uplifting series. However, One Piece is not a kid’s cartoon. Luffy is an optimist in a world of corruption. As you get further into the series the more this corruption becomes clear. To clarify, some of the topics that happen in this show include human trafficking, implied sex slavery, human experimentation (on children), child abuse, genocide, and torture. While not all of the dark topics are necessarily explicit and much of it will most likely not be picked up by a younger child, it is there, so be warned. There is also quite a bit of violence (though some of it is censored from the manga) and drinking/smoking is common (they are pirates after all). There is no complete nudity, but there is more shown than what would be appropriate. The cussing depends on what language you watch it in and where—translations vary. The main complaint I have about the series in general is that it often displays perversion as a joke. Things like trying to get into the women’s bath is played for laughs. I believe there are 3 specific instances of this happening that were rather awful. Everything else though? Really well done.

Before I start to say anything: WATCH THE ENGLISH SUBBED, NOT DUBBED. you will thank me later.Perfect for tweens-teens. Although adults will enjoy it, too. It has such a good and deep plot, and has stayed good even over the span of 900+ episodes, although the animation quality has decreased, I'll admit. It's hilarious, but also has very serious themes such as government corruption and injustice, predjudice and slavery, that might go over very young kids' heads, as well as some other hidden messages that are not explicitly stated in the show. As for violence, there can be quite a bit of blood and there are sometimes detached limbs, but nothing too bad. Although the crew are pirates and are prone to fighting and drinking a lot, they pose as really good role models because they are always eager to help others who are less fortunate, stay loyal to each other, and chase after their dreams, big (become the king of the pirates) or small(become re-united with a friend). In the later episodes, the women are often wearing very skimpy clothes, but sex is never implied throughout the whole show, (except for when sanji or brook asks to see a girl's panties every now and then, but this is just for comic relief and never actually happens.)I'm pretty sure I missed a lot of things - so many episodes are hard to cover - but that was all I could remember.

I love this show, however there are parts where other parents might not like. There is some sexual things like revealing clothing but things like this are in a lot of anime so if your kid cannot handle these things than it’s not okay. Overall it just really depends how your kid handles it, not age related.
