The Microblading Healing Process: A Day-by-Day Guide

Are you self-conscious about your natural eyebrows? Do you dream of a day where you don’t have to wear makeup to achieve a more defined eyebrow look? Don’t worry, you’re not alone. The good news is you can save yourself the hassle by getting your eyebrows microbladed!

Microblading is a semi-permanent makeup solution that uses a small, handheld tool to deposit and transfer pigment onto the skin and create microblade strokes that mimic natural, individual brow hairs. It’s been around for over 40 years but has only recently gained worldwide popularity.

One question we get asked often from those that are new to the microblading community is what the healing process is like. Don’t worry, we’re going to give you a day-by-day guide to set the record straight. First, it’s important we go over some general aftercare instructions to follow.

So, what are the microblading aftercare instructions?

In order for a successful microblading healing process, clients are given a list of aftercare instructions from their semi-permanent makeup artist. It’s important that you follow aftercare instructions very strictly. With the proper care, you’ll get through the healing process with ease.

Here’s a list of some of the directions you’ll likely receive from your artist:

  • Avoid getting water, lotion, soap, and makeup on the brow area for a week.

  • After 4 days, apply the ointment every morning and night with clean hands and a cotton swab. Do this for one week, or until scabbing has peeled.

  • Avoid swimming, the jacuzzi, and the hot sauna for two weeks.

  • Avoid increased sweating, playing sports, exercising, and tanning for two weeks.

  • Avoid exposure to UV or UV-A rays for two weeks.

  • Avoid laser and chemical treatments for two weeks, especially if they utilize Retin-A or Glycolic Acid.

  • Avoid picking, peeling, or itching the brow area for two weeks, especially when it starts to scab.

  • Avoid intense cleaning when heavy amounts of airborne debris are inevitable.

  • Avoid excessive alcohol consumption for two weeks.

  • Avoid open-air vehicles for two weeks, such as convertibles, bicycles, motorcycles, and boats.

  • Avoid excess touching of the brow area, except when applying ointment or rinsing.

Every semi-permanent makeup artist will give you a unique list of aftercare instructions and they may vary from one person to the next, depending on their skin type and other factors. Make sure you listen to the instructions carefully and don’t hesitate to ask questions when necessary.

The Microblading Healing Process Day-by-Day

Now that you have a better idea of what to expect, in regards to the aftercare instructions, it’s time to give you a breakdown of what to expect from the whole process. Overall, you’ll be looking at a healing time of about 30-40 days, a 6-week follow-up, and an annual touch-up.

Let’s take a look at the process for microblading healing, day-by-day below:

Day 1: Immediately Following Your Initial Procedure

After your initial microblading session, you’re going to be both excited and nervous. The excitement is a result of your new eyebrows, but the nervousness is a result of how they look post-treatment. Don’t worry, it’s perfectly normal for them to be a bit thicker and extremely dark.

In addition to that, you might experience some redness, slight bleeding, a little bit of pain, and tenderness. These are all normal side effects and will eventually subside as the brow area continues to heal.

Days 2-5 After the Microblading Procedure

A few days after the microblading procedure, you’ll start to notice some scabbing, and your brow area will be extremely itchy. It’s very important that you not scratch, pick, or peel the hard, thick scabs -- no matter how much you’re tempted to. Again, it will slowly subside as the area heals.

In addition to that, the fine hair strokes might be hiding. You’ll want to keep the area clean and dry, but you’ll want to start applying the ointment on the face carefully, with clean hands and a cotton swab, to help the healing process. Only apply a small amount of ointment, though.

Days 7-10 After the Microblading Treatment

About a week after the microblading treatment, the scabs flake will start to peel on its own. Don’t pick or scratch at the scabs. Instead, let them peel when they’re ready to peel. When they do, you might notice a patchy eyebrow area as the top layer of pigment starts to disappear.

You’ll also notice your eyebrows look much lighter than expected, but this will slowly correct itself as the skin heals. You just have to be patient.

Days 14-21 After the Microblading Appointment

A few weeks after the initial microblading appointment, your brows will finally be safe from water. You can continue your normal skincare and makeup routines. The eyebrows will likely still look a little light, but they will get darker and more natural as they near the end of the healing process.

Days 30-40: The End of the Healing Cycle

About a month after your initial appointment, the healing process will come to an end. With the brows completely healed, they’ll feel much more soft and natural. The color will look much better than before, but not perfect just yet. You might see some patches, but these will be corrected.

Day 42: The 6-Week Follow-Up Appointment

The past six weeks have been emotionally exhausting for you, but you’ve finally made it to your six-week follow-up appointment. During this time, your artist will make any final adjustments and give the brow area the long-lasting results that make microblading so popular and effective.

By now, you have a good idea of what your brows are going to look like. The good news is your artist can now change the color of the pigment and adjust the shape if needed. The follow-up takes about an hour and the healing process is similar as before, but should only last 5-7 days.

Day 365: The Annual Touch-Up Appointment

After your six-week follow-up, your new microbladed eyebrows will last anywhere from 6-12 months before they eventually fade. Sometimes they fade slightly and sometimes they fade significantly. The annual touch-up appointment will make them look all brand new again.

The touch-up frequency largely depends on your skin type. Those with dry and normal skin will see their final color last much longer than those with oily or combination skin. If you have oily/combination skin, expect more frequent touch-ups.
