Last week, Q1 2024 closed with solid equities, higher U.S. Treasury yields, and a surge in Bitcoin. The S&P 500 nudged >10% and NYSE FANG+ and ICE Semis Indices both around mid-teens. Small caps logged near 5% and momentum trade was strong albeit crowded. April tends to bring strong performance when equities are up from Nov through March as it’s the case now. U.S. inflation stays under control and Fed Chair Powell noted data dependency as February Core PCE was +0.26% (chart below). China and U.S. ISM Mfg PMIs expanded. Catalysts this week include Powell and other Fed speakers, OPEC+ Meeting, and global inflation. In the U.S, investors await ISM PMI, JOLTS, and the March BLS jobs report. Q2 is starting on a morose tone, rate-sensitive Utilities and REITs under pressure. Stocks are near session lows for most S&P 500 sectors as U.S Treasury yields climb 8-11bps. About 80% of S&P 500 names are trading above their 50d.
