These F1 liveries are the ugliest, should have stayed in the drawers
Which F1 liveries do you think are the ugliest to have ever graced the circuits? Here’s our top 5!
F1 fans are used to admiring cars with sleek, colorful designs. Yet, some liveries have left a mark… for all the wrong reasons. From bold ideas gone wrong to improbable color choices, here’s a look at five of the ugliest F1 liveries in history.
- Honda RA107
The Honda RA107, nicknamed the “Earth Car,” was meant to promote environmental awareness. Its design depicted planet Earth against a black space-themed background. The idea was original, but the execution was awkward.
The absence of traditional sponsors in favor of an environmental message failed to convince fans. Many saw the livery as more of a gimmick than prestigious. This is how the RA107 entered the history books as one of the ugliest F1 liveries.
On track, the car didn’t impress either. Its best result was only a fifth place in China, reinforcing the overall impression of aesthetic and technical clumsiness.
- McLaren MP4-30 (2015)
The MP4-30 failed to impress with its black-and-chrome silver livery accented with a red trim. It strangely resembled previous Mercedes engine colors. McLaren even tried a mid-season livery change to a more pronounced black-and-red, but it wasn’t enough to salvage the image.
Fans also associated this livery with a difficult season for McLaren. It became a symbol of failed design. Like the Honda RA107, it combined disappointing aesthetics with underwhelming performance. That’s how they both earned their spot among the ugliest F1 liveries ever.
- Hispania F111
The Hispania F111 is also an example of creativity that went wrong. To attract sponsors, they covered the F1 car with fake advertising stickers and slogans like “This could be you.”
Daniel Simon, known for Tron: Legacy, designed it. Unfortunately, the design didn’t translate well to F1, since it looked chaotic and unrealistic. Behind schedule development-wise, the car was never competitive, turning its livery into a source of ridicule rather than a visual asset.
- Arrows A20 (2002)
We remember the Arrows A20 for its “half-and-half” paint scheme. That actually reflected the team’s chaos amid financial and technical struggles. The already underperforming car was painted asymmetrically. It then created a confusing and unharmonious effect.
Pedro de la Rosa scored a point at the Australian GP. However, despite this achievement, the aesthetics remained a huge talking point. The car illustrates the challenges small teams face in F1. And that cemented its place among the ugliest liveries the sport has seen.
- BAR 01
The BAR 01 is perhaps the most emblematic example of a failed livery. The F1 team had two sponsors: Lucky Strike for Villeneuve and 555 for Zonta. They wanted to feature both on each car, which resulted in a central “zip” that split the vehicle in two.
Driver suits and helmets were also split. Adaptations for tobacco-free races only added to the visual chaos. Coupled with an unreliable car, the BAR 01 became one of the ugliest F1 liveries. A symbol of the worst design choices in Formula 1.
