By Rei Penber

Season 2 of Tokyo Revengers promises to be even better than the first. Here's what anime-only fans can expect.

Tokyo Revengers Season 2: What To Expect (1)

Tokyo Revengers is an ongoing manga written by author and illustrator Ken Wakui, published by Kodansha, that debuted in March 2017. The series started getting a lot of attention after the release of season 1 of the anime in April 2021. Just three months after the end of season 1, the second season was greenlit, which goes to show how successful the first season had been.

The Tokyo Revengers manga is currently on its 29th volume and has seen a great rise in sales, thanks to the first season of the anime. Now, all eyes are on the second season, which, if handled well and faithful to the manga, would see the manga get an even bigger boost. With incredible characters, terrific action and a deeper-than-ever dive into the gangs, the second season has fans excited in anticipation already. As fans know, the first season of the series was made up of 24 episodes covering the Touman Arc, The Moebius arc, and the Valhalla arc. Tokyo Revengers Season 2, which will be released in January 2023, will also probably feature around 24 episodes, and will most likely be covering the Black Dragon arc and Tenjiku arc.

A Recollection Of Past Events

To discuss the events of the upcoming season, fans need to dive into the major events of the first season first. Tokyo Revengers started with Takemichi, a 26-year-old virgin, who had no real purpose in his life until one day, while he was watching the news, he saw a familiar name in Tachibana Hinata, his ex-girlfriend from middle school. Hinata was murdered by the Yakuza.

After he almost died, he goes back 12 years in the past and makes it his mission to save her. Quite a lot happens during his mission to save Hinata, and he ends up joining the Tokyo Manji Gang, where he saves, or tries to save, the other members from death to change the future and stop Mikey, the gang leader, from turning evil.

Black Dragon Arc

Tokyo Revengers Season 2: What To Expect (3)

Coming over to the second season of Tokyo Revengers, fans are waiting in anticipation for the Black Dragon arc. The Black Dragon arc, also known as the Christmas Showdown arc, spans chapters 78 to 121 of the manga. This arc will probably take up half of the season, around 12 episodes, more or less, forming the first four of the second season. As expected, things will pick up right from where the first season left off with an intense cliffhanger. As fans know, Takemichi comes back to the future but finds himself and Chifuyu getting abducted. Eventually, the latter is shot in front of his eyes. The arc will then see Takemichi, the crybaby hero, be rescued and saved by Kazutora – a character those who watched the second half of the first season will recognize.

Takemichi returning to the past is what kicks off this new arc, where the Tokyo Manji Gang will have to face off against the 10th generation Black Dragons, a gang originally founded by Mikey's late older brother, Shinichiro Sano. The captain of this generation, Shiba Taiju is an older brother to the Second Division Vice-Captain, Shiba Hakkai, and they, along with their sister Shiba Yuzuha, will play huge roles during this part of the story. As this also concerns the Second Division, Mitsuya will see himself deeply involved.

Tenjiku Arc

Tokyo Revengers Season 2: What To Expect (4)

The Tenjiku arc is the longest story arc in Tokyo Revengers so far, spanning from chapters 122 to 188 of the manga. Seeing as this arc is longer, it should take more screen time than the Black Dragons arc. Perhaps 14 episodes would be enough for it, if that number can be met in the season.

Following the previous arc, the Black Dragon arc, Takemichi returns to the future only to see another grim outcome, perhaps the worse yet. The Tenjiku gang has absorbed the Tokyo Manji Gang and driven Mikey to insanity. Takemichi and Naoto decide to investigate this gang and end up getting fatally wounded. Takemichi manages to return to the past before he dies, however, this means he is stuck in the past until he's able to change this outcome. This arc's main villain, Izana Kurokawa, is the leader of the Tenjiku Gang. This arc gives fans the opportunity to, for the first time, see someone rival Mikey in strength – something even Shiba Taiju couldn't manage. The Tenjiku arc is extremely important in more ways than one, however, most importantly, it will mark the conclusion to the series' main antagonist, Tetta Kisaki. At the same time, the arc will also show Takemichi's growth and determination as he will have to face the Tenjiku Gang without the assistance of Mikey or Draken.

Characters To Keep An Eye On

Tokyo Revengers Season 2: What To Expect (5)

As this season will probably cover two of the most important arcs of the story, there will be a lot of characters who will take the spotlight and shine, some a lot more than others. It is no surprise that Takemichi, the main character, will be heavily involved in both arcs as he tries to change the future for the better. Mikey, the leader of Touman, needs to be kept from turning evil as that is the main reason as to why all the bad futures take place. Mikey will have some involvement in the Black Dragon arc, however, his main stage to shine will be in the Tenjiku arc.

The Shiba siblings will be the main focus of the Black Dragons arc, seeing as the eldest, Taiju, is the leader of his gang. The other two, Yuzuha and Hakkai, will have to face their older brother and put an end to his grasp over their lives. Tetta Kisaki, the series' main villain and supposedly the cause of Mikey's evilness in the future, will also get his spotlight this season. In the Black Dragon arc, he will see some involvement with Takemichi, but even more importantly, in the Tenjiku arc, he will commit some heinous acts.

Tokyo Revengers season 2 is certainly going to like things up and boost the popularity of the series even further. Provided that the anime adaptation of the manga is decent, fans are all set to be treated to an incredible run of arcs.

Tokyo Revengers Season 2 will air in January 2023.
