The 2022 US PGA champion Justin Thomas after shooting a four-under 67 in the third round: "This week has exceeded all my expectations. It's been more enjoyable than anything I reallythought or could have imagined.

"I feel like I have done the most important part of puttingmyself at least within striking distance, and I'm going to need a really goodfront nine tomorrow to work my way in the mix. It would be nice to have a chance thereon the back nine."

On the reception from his hometown fans after his chip-in birdie at the 14th: "It was crazy. I had goosebumps forpretty much right up until I got to 15 tee. It was one of the coolest moments of my career. It wasunbelievable."

Viktor Hovland makes the most of that superb approach shot on the 17th, tidying up for his fourth birdie of the day.

He joins the group at 12 under par and is sitting nicely in a stacked leaderboard.

Now, what can he do on the par five 18th?

    Schauffele -13, Morikawa -14, Theegala -13 (16)

As you were after the 16th, which after the hectic 15th is something of a relief for anyone doing scoring or live text commentary on this group!

Collin Morikawa gets away with that dodgy second to save his par and keep the lead.

  4. Birdie finish for Finaupublished at 23:25 18 May

    23:25 18 May

    Finau -10 (70)

Cracking eagle effort from Tony Finau on the 18th from 45 feet.

He sets up a kick-in birdie and finishes his day at 10 under par.

    Four back as things stand.

  5. MacIntyre moves uppublished at 23:22 18 May

    23:22 18 May

    MacIntyre -12 (66)

The perfect finish for Bob MacIntyre.

He plays his second shot onto the edge of the green, leaving himself a lengthy 33 feet putt for a closing eagle.

He can't quite reach with his effort and rolls in a two-footer for his sixth and final birdie of the day.

With just the one blemish on his card he signs for an impressive 66 that leaves the Scotsman in a tie for fifth and two shots off the lead.

    Schauffele -13, Morikawa -14, Theegala -13 (15)

"Oh no" says Collin Morikawa as it looks like he's almost thinned his approach to 16 as it comes in with too much heat to stick the landing and skips off into the rough off the back of the green.

Xander Schauffle muscles up to whack his second out of a dodgy lie in the rough, and he's a deceptively strong guy so he's able to just creep onto the front of the green.

Xander Schauffele has to put his head back in the mode as hewalks to find his tee shot on the 16th. It will be a little bitscrambled. Part of that is the play of his partners – Sahith Theegala holing alovely lob shot and Morikawa capitalising with a birdie.

This is where his mental work and his character will be at apoint where he’s thinking, “How am I going to deal with this?”

Will he take theperspective of "here we go again" or see it as inevitably, there is always a 30or 40-minute wobble over the weekend. If you weather the storm long enough, thebirdies will come back again.

But this is a major championship and it's such a good field. No one is going to give it to him.

    DeChambeau -11, Eckroat -9, Hovland -11 (16)

A peach of a shot from Viktor Hovland.

The Norwegian hits a lovely approach shot on the 17th that lands perfectly on the green and rolls to within a couple of feet of the hole. Nearly a kick-in chance of birdie to take him to within two shots of the lead.

After dropping a shot on the previous hole, Austin Eckroat looks set to get it straight back as he follows Hovland in close to the cup.

More work for Bryson DeChambeau to do as he over hits his approach and it ends up off the back of the green

    Scheffler -6 (16)

Back to back pars for Scottie Scheffler for the first time of this rollercoaster third round.

It required a niggly seven footer to seal it, but no further damage for the world number one.

    Burmester -11 (17)

Big-hitting South African Dean Burmester is well in this championship after picking up his fifth birdie of the day at 17 to improve to 11 under.

He won twice on the DP World Tour at the end of last year and captured a LIV Golf title in Miami in April, so knows how to get the job done. He could be a quiet danger man.

    Rose -12 (64)

When asked to summarise his seven-under 64 today, Justin Rose jokingly said; "Pretty average compared to Shane [Lowry], myplaying partner.

"Today was a lot of fun. We gotoff to the dream start. The start of this golf course isdefinitely demanding. We were both five under through seven androlling, and definitely quite aware that we were making someprogress up the leaderboard.

"There was definitely that urgency to feel like youwanted to stay on track and keep up the momentum todayto try to give yourself a shot going into tomorrow. It was the classic moving day, and job well done."

On if he can win the tournament: "I still believe in myself. Still believe that Ihave these opportunities in me in majors for sure.

"This year has been very difficult. I haven't seenmuch go my way in terms of tournament golf but seeing aton go my way away from competitive golf. My practicesessions are awesome. I feel like I'm doing things with thegolf ball that I have never done in my career in terms ofspeed and ball-striking, and some of the quality I think hasreally gone up."

This PGA has just been flipped on its head at the 15thhole.

Suddenly, Xander Schauffele has an awful lot to think about.

    23:09 18 May

    Schauffele -13, Morikawa -14, Theegala -13 (15)

He's hardly put a foot wrong all week, but that visit to the rough ends up costing Xander Schauffele two shots as he can only make a double-bogey six.

Collin Morikawa watches all this knowing he's got a short three-footer for birdie, which is now for the lead, and he makes it - just! The ball does a full lap of honour before eventually dropping.

Shots changing hands all over the place here but the end result is Morikawa now leads the US PGA Championship.

  14. Chip in!published at 23:06 18 May

    23:06 18 May

    Schauffele -15, Morikawa -13, Theegala -13 (15)

Box office stuff from Sahith Theegala from a similar spot to Xander Schauffele's fourth - he goes the high road though with a flamboyant flop shot that takes a coupe of bounces and dives in the hole for birdie.

  15. Schauffele strugglingpublished at 23:05 18 May

    23:05 18 May

    Schauffele -15, Morikawa -13, Theegala -12 (14)

Unforced error from Xander Schauffele as he goes long at 15 and into some gnarly rough, which when he tries to hack it out just strangles the ball and he only manages to duff it forwards three feet.

He gets it out with his fourth shot but has a length putt for bogey. Trouble

  16. Birdie for Koepka at the lastpublished at 23:04 18 May

    23:04 18 May

    Koepka -4 (73)

Suddenly Brooks Koepka is putting for eagle on the 18th.

It's from outer space on the far side of the green but he's paced it nicely to roll it it in tight.

He finishes with back-to-back birdies - a bit of consolation on a very tough day for the defending champion.

  17. MacIntyre sticking aroundpublished at 22:58 18 May

    22:58 18 May

    MacIntyre -11 (17)

Bob MacIntyre has perhaps flown under the radar today with all the crazy scoring, but he has put together a very nice round.

Heading into the final hole he is four under for the day and 11 under for the tournament. That sees him sitting alongside some big hitters in the leaderboard with the likes of Bryson DeChambeau and Viktor Hovland.

If he could pick up another shot on the par-five 18th then the Scotsman will be one to watch going into Sunday.

Rory McIlroy after shooting a three-under 68 to move to eight under par: "I really got it going around the turnthere to get to four under, and then I kept hitting good shotsand had good looks at 11, 12, 13 and 15. Then I made twobogeys with a missed putt on 14.

"Therewas a six or seven-hole stretch where the putter cooled on me. If I look back on thetournament, I may rue that stretch where I wasn'table to hole any putts.

"[Tomorrow] I have to go out there andtry to shoot a low one. I putted really well on Thursday, and then just the last couple days it's sort of deserted me. I need the putter to heat up again, and witheverything else it's doing, there's certainly another low [round] in me."

Schaufffele has had previous of not getting it done. Maybe hecan learn from what has not gone right in the past. He’s knocked in that birdieputt there but really kept his emotions in check as he strolls to the next tee.

He knows there is still lots and lots of work to be done.
