What to do if your Visa gift card is declined
There may also be other problems that cause your Visa gift card to not work or be declined when you’re shopping. These can often be easily resolved, and may include:
- Payment portal issues. The retailer you’re shopping with might be having server issues or technical difficulties. In this case, it’s best to wait and try again, or contact them if you’re having issues.
- Lack of funds. If your Visa gift card has insufficient funds to cover the transaction, it will be declined.
- Card reader issues. When shopping in-store, you may encounter malfunctioning card readers. This could result in your card being declined.
- Expired card. Remember to check the expiry date on your Visa gift card. If it’s out of date, you won’t be able to use it. Please call the number on the back of your card to request a replacement card at no cost.
- Gift card theft/fraud report. If the Visa gift card you’re using has been reported stolen or missing, it will be blocked and cannot be used to make any payments. There’s no need to worry, you can request a new card and transfer your balance over. Please call the number on the back of your card to request a new card.
- Invalid details. Make sure to enter the correct details. Providing Incorrect information, such as a security PIN or Card Expiry date, will result in a declined payment.

Visa gift cards are a one-time use gift card loaded with a predetermined amount chosen at the time of purchase. However, as they are prepaid cards, these accounts cannot be overdrawn. So, if you try to make a payment with insufficient funds, the Visa gift card won't work, and the payment will be declined.
