We Promise These Dressers Under $500 Don't Look Cheap (2024)

Some pieces, like mattresses and sofas, are worth the high price tag. After all, an uncomfortable bed or couch could lead to back issues years down the line. One area you could save a bit, though? A cheap dresser, which is always a good move. A $200 dresser doesn't do anything differently than a $2,000 dresser. They both have only one job: to store your clothes, so if you don't want to spend more than a couple hundred dollars, there's no need. Ahead, we found the best, most stylish cheap dressers (read: all under $500) on the market.

They may all fall in the same price range, but each of our top picks varies drastically in terms of style. Below, you'll find cane, wood, fluted details, and more. What's more, all of the dressers below come in quite a few sizes, so whether you're looking for something to squeeze into your small space or you'd rather fill out an awkwardly long wall, you'll find what you're looking for here. So, consider this your cheat sheet to finding a beautiful (and useful) cheap dresser. Did we mention that more than a few of our favorites are on sale? Go ahead and snag your favorite at a truly unbeatable price.

We know what you may be thinking: This dresser is really dark. It is; you're not wrong. However, imagine it in a light and airy bedroom complete with white or beige bedding and pale blue throw pillows, an equally pale area rug, and matching walls. A dark piece can add a touch of dimension to your space without looking out of place. Plus, as far as we're concerned, this shade is considered a neutral. On Wayfair's site, this color is called green, but as you can see, it's clearly not a lime or emerald hue. It's more of a seafoam shade. It also comes in white, black, and a brighter navy. One reviewer said, "This is excellent quality and just what we were looking for. It also came faster than expected. The color is very close to what's pictured."

Normally, tall dressers are a bit narrower than their more horizontal counterparts, but this one doesn't compromise on height or width. Each of the four drawers has an internal width of 27 inches (the top dresser is slightly shorter than the three beneath it), so you will have plenty of space to put T-shirts, jeans, socks, and anything else you don't need or want to hang. "I was pleasantly surprised by the quality. I’ve put together several pieces of furniture over the last five years and this by far was the best experience (even the instructions were top notch, with humorous little moments added in for the reader). A beautiful piece that feels very sturdy and should last for years," a reviewer said.

Anyone with a burl will probably snatch this up the moment they see it. From the contrasting grain to the fluted design, this is one of the best dressers on the list. Just look at the barely-there knobs that blend right in with the wood behind it. Did we mention that this arrives fully assembled? One reviewer said, "Absolutely love these side tables/mini dressers. Our small bedroom doesn’t have much space, so these help maximize storage. They're light and come already built which is great!" The reviewer actually mentioned something that we want to address: A dresser of this size can absolutely work double-duty as both a storage piece and a nightstand, so if you, like the reviewer, don't have a lot of room in your bedroom, skip the classic night stands and flank your bed with two of these.

We love a nine-drawer dresser—especially one that doesn't take up a ton of space, so you can imagine our delight when we happened upon this one for less than $250. If you have the space for this in your bedroom, we recommend snagging it ASAP. Something like this is also ideal for anyone who doesn't have a large closet. "I absolutely love this piece. It is sturdy, it has a gloss to it, it's easy to clean, and just the right size," one reviewer said. "My only fault with it is that it is on the difficult side to assemble: lots and lots of screws and pieces. But, it's all that I wanted more. Highly recommended!"

Technically, this dresser is the matching counterpart to AllModern's crib of the same name, but since there's no distinct changing table elements on the surface, we don't see any real reasons against using it in a childless home. Aside from the six spacious drawers, the pressed cane fabric makes this piece one of our favorites. Its neutral wood tone (there's no red or black undertones) allows it to work in any bedroom, no matter the pre-existing palette. We'd also like to add that, unlike the metallic finishes in your bathroom or kitchen, your wood accessories and furniture do not need to match to work.

We may be partial to the crisp all-white look of this clean-lined dresser, but if you want something a bit more dramatic for your bedroom, snag this piece in any of the three additional finishes, including black, walnut, and a distressed charcoal. Full disclosure: The other colors read a bit farmhouse, so if your bedroom skews modern, you may want to go with the white. If you're putting it across from your bed, top it with a big-screen TV.

What to Look for in a Cheap Dresser?

We Promise These Dressers Under $500 Don't Look Cheap (73)

Generally speaking, when you buy an expensive piece of furniture, you're paying for both the brand name and the materials. Cheap furniture, however, you're paying for less of the fancy elements and more for a product to just serve its basic function. So here's what to look for to make sure you're spending money on something that will only benefit you.

Size: A dresser often comes in two configurations: horizontal or vertical. Neither is better than the other, as they generally boast the same amount of storage space. However, one will work better in your space than the other. If your bedroom is on the smaller side, you may want to go with a vertical dresser because it takes up less floor space than their horizontal counterparts. If your space is bigger (or even if you have one awkwardly long wall), a horizontal one will work.

Number of Drawers: This is crucial. Anyone who uses their dresser as much or more than they do their closet, the number of drawers will probably determine which dresser you end up getting. Generally speaking, if you have plenty of closet space, complete with shelves and hanging rods, you may not need a big dresser with six or more drawers. On the other hand, if your closet has only one hanging rod, get a dresser with at least six spacious drawers because you'll store most of your clothes there.

Assembly: Most of the products on our list require at least some assembly, so if you don't consider yourselves great with tools or putting things together, opt for one that requires little to no assembly. Assembly is another element that often comes with a cheaper piece of furniture, so if you want to pay under $500, know that you will probably have to put your piece together yourself.

What Are Most Cheap Dressers Made Of?

We Promise These Dressers Under $500 Don't Look Cheap (74)

Most cheap dressers are made of manufactured wood, which, as its name implies, is manmade. It's not plastic, though. In fact, it technically is wood. Manufactured wood is made by heating, gluing, and compressing wood chips and sawdust together with the finished product closely resembling solid wood. Because it's manufactured (as opposed to existing in nature), it's typically cheaper and less durable than the foraged and salvaged wood planks used to make more high-end furniture. Manufactured wood may be cheaper than solid wood, but it's also much more delicate, making it a bit more prone to scratches and basic wear and tear. Depending on how much care you put into it (e.g. don't overstuff the drawers and slam them shut in a harsh manner) the piece could last for a year or several years.

Do You Actually Need a Dresser for Your Bedroom?

We Promise These Dressers Under $500 Don't Look Cheap (75)

No, you do not necessarily need a dresser, but if you don't have enough closet space, a dresser definitely comes in handy. Plus, it gives you a less formal space to keep smaller pieces, like socks and underwear. Dressers can also serve as a media console under the television in your bedroom or as a night stand beside your bed. Plus having a large, flat surface just gives you another place to put your perfume, jewelry, or anything else you'd like in your line of sight.
