History[]

Background[]

Yuri was born on April 3, 1938, in Padunskaya Industrial Park, Kemerovo Oblast, USSR, as written in his passport.[2] Yuri eventually joined the Soviet Armed Forces and led his men to victory over the Chinese in Damansky.

Personality[]

On the surface, Yuri appears quite friendly, albeit somewhat eccentric. In the Soviet Union, he is apparently known for having a "screw loose" which can be seen by his constant crass jokes and energetic attitude. Yuri apparently also enjoys drinking and gambling.

However, his friendly nature is all a façade, as it is revealed he not only drugs Joyce and Murray's drinks, planning on selling them in Russia, but also turns Dmitri in, showing that Yuri is a very untrustworthy person. Yuri has no shame in doing any of this and instead laughs at it and claims his mother would be proud of all the money he makes off of his betrayals. This shows Yuri is perhaps somewhat of a sad*st, as he is fully aware anyone he turns in will likely be tortured or killed. Yuri himself also threatens to shoot his prisoners with no second thought.

When Yuri is not in control of a situation, he is actually somewhat cowardly. He gives in to several threats made by Joyce and Murray and reluctantly goes along with their plans. Whilst held hostage and forced to pose as Murray, Yuri makes several attempts to alert the Russian guards of the plot, showing his loyalty for his motherland. Eventually, after the trio escape with Dmitri and Hopper, Yuri agrees to help them but once again shows his untrustworthy side as he attempts to sabotage his helicopter, Katinka, to halt their mission. However, Yuri's attitude finally changes when Dmitri openly calls him a coward for doing so and reminds Yuri of his military days when he led his men to victory. Dmitri explains that his actions are not just harming America, but the fate of the entire world.

This changes Yuri's mind, and he courageously flies back to the prison to save Jim, Joyce and Murray alongside Dmitri.

Abilities[]

  • Aeronautics: Yuri is extremely proficient in flying aerial vehicles. He is shown to fly an airplane from Alaska to the Kamchatka Peninsula, and later, he presumably flew his helicopter Katinka back to the United States of America. Presumably, he became proficient in flying during his time serving in the Red Army.
  • Scamming: Yuri is an expert scammer, and knows how to get the most money out of any situation. He was not satisfied even when he was given $40,000 by Murray Bauman and Joyce Byers, but instead decided to sell them to the prison in Kamchatka, as well as rat out prison guard Dmitri Antonov, to get even more reward money.
  • Smuggling: Yuri is also proficient in smuggling large crates of peanut butter from USA to the Soviet Union, selling the bottles for a much lower price there.
  • Brawler: Yuri isn't known to be trained in any form of combat, but he found himelf being able to get the better of Murray during their fight. He is later defeated after being distracted by a gun.
  • Multilingualism: Yuri can speak both Russian, his native language, and English. He uses English to communicate with Hopper, Joyce and Murray.

Equipment[]

  • Jif Peanut Butter: Being a smuggler of peanut butter, he has crates upon crates of the jars in his warehouse in Kamchatka.
  • ROKS-2 Flamethrowers: Yuri stored several flamethrowers at his warehouse. Murray Bauman used one of these flamethrowers to burn some Demodogs and the Russian Demogorgon.
  • AKM Rifle: This was also one of the weapons stored in Yuri's warehouse. Jim Hopper brought one this to the prison as defense against the Demodogs and the Russian Demogorgon.

Dmitri Antonov

Yuri settled a deal with the Russian Guard for him to bring Hopper from Kamchatka to Joyce and Murray, so Enzo could become rich and Joyce could get Hopper back. However Yuri betrayed him, as he liked to play tricks and get what he wanted with his best desire. He allowed Enzo to be exposed to the Russian Guards, forcing him to become a prisoner in Kamchatka as well. Enzo thought he could trust him, but did not think about if he could be trusted or not.

After the adults escaped from the prison, Enzo was cruel to Yuri just like everyone else, and was very annoying about his funny business. He threatened him with a gun after Hopper was unsuccessful on forcing Yuri to get them to another plane to go back to America. He called him a double crossing mudak, and threatened to decorate the roof of the van with his brains. After they got to Yuri's warehouse, Enzo was looking just for a reason to shoot Yuri, and wanted to make sure that he would not play them. He, and everyone else, sensed annoyance to Yuri's presentation of Katinka to them and asked if he would shoot him now, or later, He doubted that Katinka would fly them to America. Yuri claimed that Katinka needed a tune up.

When Yuri was fixing the helicopter, Enzo was talking down on Yuri with Murray, and grew concerned when Yuri was trying to sabotage them once again by removing the spark plug of the helicopter. Yuri called him a lizard brain, assuming that they were not engineers, and attempted to convince them that that is how it works. Enzo knew that sound was not good. Enzo throughout thought that Yuri was playing tricks on them once again.

When Hopper, Joyce and Murray went to Kamchatka to destroy the particles, Enzo furiously told Yuri that he knew that there were monsters, that he has seen for himself, and yet he was still playing them. Yuri snapped that he owe these Americans nothing, and does not see why he is doing this in the first place. Enzo told him that there is a great evil existed, and told him to think about his country, the world, and his Motherland. This convinced him to get serious, and he fixed Katinka and went to pick up the Americans that had just destroyed the particles in Kamchatka.

It seems as though prior to Jim Hopper's arrival, Yuri had a friendly relationship with Dmitri, and that Dmitri trusted Yuri. But after Yuri betrayed Dmitri, Dmitri understandably turned coarse and angry towards Yuri, several times threatening Yuri's life and admitting his desire to kill him. After Dmitri brought Yuri to his senses, it is presumed Yuri and Dmitri became friendly towards each other again.

Hello, this is Yuri, of 'Yuri's Fish n' Fly'. Would you like to book a trip with me and perhaps together we soar the Arctic with the fish and the polar bears? I'm sorry are you speaking, I cannot hear you because this is a pre-recorded message, you peanut brain. I got you. I got you good. I must be very busy now, perhaps with a customer. Perhaps with my beautiful Katinka. But I'm pleased to book a trip for you another time for a good, fair price. Much more fair price than [unintelligible Russian]... Just leave a number and I will call when less busy. Goodbye.

— Yuri Ismaylov[3]
