How much money do millionaires keep in the bank?
A smart millionaire would never keep more than $250,000 in a single bank because that is the FDIC insurance limit for a single depositor. A smarter millionaire would never keep more than they needed to cover the checks they will write plus a small amount of buffer, because banks pay very low interest rates.
“Millionaires' checking accounts are all over the place,” Thompson said. “Some clients will only keep enough to pay for immediate expenses (e.g., $10,000) and others will have $150,000 in checking on any given day.”
I've worked in Wealth Management serving people worth 8, 9 and 10 figures for many years, and based on my experience, I can tell you in reality, when a billionaire stores $50 million in their bank account that's already a lot. And hey, that may only represent a mere 5% of their overall wealth.
For savings, aim to keep three to six months' worth of expenses in a high-yield savings account, but note that any amount can be beneficial in a financial emergency. For checking, an ideal amount is generally one to two months' worth of living expenses plus a 30% buffer.
Someone who has $1 million in liquid assets, for instance, is usually considered to be a high net worth (HNW) individual. You might need $5 million to $10 million to qualify as having a very high net worth while it may take $30 million or more to be considered ultra-high net worth.
To feel wealthy, Americans say you need a net worth of at least $2.2 million on average, according to financial services company Charles Schwab's annual Modern Wealth Survey.
According to Schwab's 2023 Modern Wealth Survey, Americans perceive an average net worth of $2.2 million as wealthy. Knight Frank's research indicates that a net worth of $4.4 million is required to be in the top 1% in America, a figure much higher than in countries like Japan, the U.K. and Australia.

The usual narrative that explains the wealthy hardly keep most of their funds in the bank has just been affirmed by the world's richest man. Jeff Bezos, the CEO and founder of the most valuable retail company on the planet and believed to be worth $183 billion, keeps about $9.53 billion in cash (5% of his net wealth).
Wealthy people do not leave large amounts of money in saving/checking accounts earning no interest or income. Instead they invest their money in stocks, bonds, real estate, mutual funds, etc.
How much cash can you keep at home legally in US?
The government has no regulations on the amount of money you can legally keep in your house or even the amount of money you can legally own overall. Just, the problem with keeping so much money in one place (likely in the form of cash) — it's very vulnerable to being lost.
How much is too much savings? Keeping too much of your money in savings could mean missing out on the chance to earn higher returns elsewhere. It's also important to keep FDIC limits in mind. Anything over $250,000 in savings may not be protected in the rare event that your bank fails.
For many people, financial stability means being confident in your ability to pay for all the expenses in your life — whether expected or not. There's no one-size-fits-all number in your bank or investment account that means you've achieved this stability, but $100,000 is a good amount to aim for.
Based on that figure, an annual income of $500,000 or more would make you rich. The Economic Policy Institute uses a different baseline to determine who constitutes the top 1% and the top 5%. For 2021, you're in the top 1% if you earn $819,324 or more each year. The top 5% of income earners make $335,891 per year.
In 2020, according to Pew Research Center analysis, the median for upper income households was around $220,000 and the median for middle income households was slightly above $90,000.

Millionaires also bank differently than the rest of us. Any bank accounts they have are handled by a private banker who probably also manages their wealth. There is no standing in line at the teller's window. Studies indicate that millionaires may have, on average, as much as 25% of their money in cash.
Net Worth Poverty Explained
That's the number the study used as a threshold for net worth poverty. If a family has less than about $6,500 in assets, they are considered to be net worth poor. “Wealth, or net worth, is the value of total household assets,” says Lisa A.
Millionaires also have zero-balance accounts with private banks. They leave their money in cash and cash equivalents and they write checks on their zero-balance account. At the end of the business day, the private bank, as custodian of their various accounts, sells off enough liquid assets to settle up for that day.
Household wealth or net worth is the value of assets owned by every member of the household minus their debt. The terms are used interchangeably in this report. Assets include owned homes, vehicles, financial accounts, retirement accounts, stocks, bonds and mutual funds, and more.
How much money does the average person have in the bank?
American households, on average, have $41,600 in savings, according to data last collected by the Federal Reserve in 2019. The median balance for American households is $5,300, according to the same data.
A checking account is a necessity for most people, but they're definitely not one-size-fits-all. Ultra-high-net-worth individuals (UHNWIs) need checking accounts that are equipped to meet their unique wealth management needs.
Generally, there is no limit on deposits. However, there are limitations on the amount of funds the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC) will insure. Please refer to the Understanding Deposit Insurance section of the FDIC's website for more information on FDIC deposit insurance.
JPMorgan Chase: Based in New York City, and, with over$2.7 trillion in assets under management, JPMorgan Chase is one of the best private banks with a lot of different services and investment options available. JPMorgan was one of the banks that started the trend of tailoring their services toward the wealthy.
DDA/MMDA allows you to place funds into demand deposit and/or money market deposit accounts. You can deposit up to $100 million for each account type. With this option, you may receive expanded insurance protection and still have the flexibility to access your funds when you need them.
