How much to invest monthly to become a millionaire in 10 years?
Now, let's consider how our calculations change if the time horizon is 10 years. If you are starting from scratch, you will need to invest about $4,757 at the end of every month for 10 years. Suppose you already have $100,000. Then you will only need $3,390 at the end of every month to become a millionaire in 10 years.
Annual compounding results in slightly lower numbers, while monthly or weekly compounding results in higher numbers. At a 12% average return, it would take a monthly investment of around $4,350 to become a millionaire in 10 years. At a 14% return, it would take around $3,875 per month.
In order to hit your goal of $1 million in 10 years, SmartAsset's savings calculator estimates that you would need to save around $7,900 per month. This is if you're just putting your money into a high-yield savings account with an average annual percentage yield (APY) of 1.10%.
Rate of return | 10 years | 30 years |
---|---|---|
4% | $72,000 | $336,500 |
6% | $79,000 | $474,300 |
8% | $86,900 | $679,700 |
10% | $95,600 | $987,000 |
Tax-advantaged investing first
But let's say that WAS your target. After maxing out your 401(k) contribution, you'd need to invest $833 of your take-home pay, per paycheck, every month for 15 years in order to have a million.
If you invest $10,000 today at 10% interest, how much will you have in 10 years? Summary: The future value of the investment of $10000 after 10 years at 10% will be $ 25940.
“The primary levers to accumulate $500,000 in 10 years are investing more, spending less in retirement, or delaying retirement (including part-time work). Ten years allows for compounding to work in your favor. This goal requires careful planning and long-term strategy, not quick fixes.
If someone would have started investing Rs 20,000 monthly 10 years ago in this scheme, the value of their corpus would have been Rs 93.81 lakh in present times. The total investment during the entire period would have been Rs 24 lakh, while the wealth gain would have been Rs 69.81 lakh.
Given an average 10% rate of return on the S&P 500, you need to save about $1,400 per month in order to save up $1 million over 20 years. That's a lot of money, but the good news is that changing the variables even a little bit can make a big difference.
Once you have $1 million in assets, you can look seriously at living entirely off the returns of a portfolio. After all, the S&P 500 alone averages 10% returns per year. Setting aside taxes and down-year investment portfolio management, a $1 million index fund could provide $100,000 annually.
What if I invested $1000 in S&P 500 10 years ago?
According to our calculations, a $1000 investment made in February 2014 would be worth $5,971.20, or a gain of 497.12%, as of February 5, 2024, and this return excludes dividends but includes price increases. Compare this to the S&P 500's rally of 178.17% and gold's return of 55.50% over the same time frame.
Investing $1,000 a month for 20 years would leave you with around $687,306. The specific amount you end up with depends on your returns -- the S&P 500 has averaged 10% returns over the last 50 years. The more you invest (and the earlier), the more you can take advantage of compound growth.
Investing $1,000 per month for 5 years through a systematic investment plan could have you end up with $83,156.62.
Let's say you want to become a millionaire in five years. If you're starting from scratch, online millionaire calculators (which return a variety of results given the same inputs) estimate that you'll need to save anywhere from $13,000 to $15,500 a month and invest it wisely enough to earn an average of 10% a year.
Assuming that you can earn this 10% average return over your investing career, if you are getting started investing this year and you want to become a millionaire in 30 years, you would need to invest $506.60 per month. This amount may seem like a lot, but it may actually be pretty doable for many people.
Too many people are paid a lot of money to tell investors that yields like that are impossible. But the truth is you can get a 9.5% yield today--and even more. But even at 9.5%, we're talking about a middle-class income of $4,000 per month on an investment of just a touch over $500K.
The Rule of 72 is focused on compounding interest that compounds annually. For simple interest, you'd simply divide 1 by the interest rate expressed as a decimal. If you had $100 with a 10 percent simple interest rate with no compounding, you'd divide 1 by 0.1, yielding a doubling rate of 10 years.
Discount Rate | Present Value | Future Value |
---|---|---|
2% | $100 | $121.90 |
3% | $100 | $134.39 |
4% | $100 | $148.02 |
5% | $100 | $162.89 |
We started with $10,000 and ended up with $4,918 in interest after 10 years in an account with a 4% annual yield. But by depositing an additional $100 each month into your savings account, you'd end up with $29,648 after 10 years, when compounded daily.
If you have $400,000 in the bank you can retire early at age 62, but it will be tight. The good news is that if you can keep working for just five more years, you are on track for a potentially quite comfortable retirement by full retirement age.
Is $1,500 a month enough to retire on?
While $1,500 might not be enough for non-housing retirement expenses for many people, it doesn't mean it's impossible to stick to this or other amounts, such as if you're already retired and don't have the ability to increase your budget.
On average for a comfortable retirement, an individual will spend £43,100 a year, whilst the average couple in retirement spends £59,000 a year. This means if you retire at 55 with £300k, an individual will run out of funds in approximately 7 years, and a couple in 5 years. So, on paper, it doesn't look like enough.
Discount Rate | Present Value | Future Value |
---|---|---|
5% | $1,000 | $2,653.30 |
6% | $1,000 | $3,207.14 |
7% | $1,000 | $3,869.68 |
8% | $1,000 | $4,660.96 |
If you earn 7%, your money will double in a little over 10 years. You can also use the Rule of 72 to plug in interest rates from credit card debt, a car loan, home mortgage, or student loan to figure out how many years it'll take your money to double for someone else.
Investing as little as $200 a month can, if you do it consistently and invest wisely, turn into more than $150,000 in as soon as 20 years. If you keep contributing the same amount for another 20 years while generating the same average annual return on your investments, you could have more than $1.2 million.
