Is it normal to be nervous as a first year teacher?
You aren't the only nervous one in the room. Students are excited and nervous, too! Remember to keep their feelings in mind and build a base of classroom norms while encouraging your students' desire to learn.
A 2017 survey by the American Federation of Teachers and the Badass Teachers Association confirmed teacher anxiety is higher than most other professions. According to the survey, 61 percent of educators reported their work was "always" or "often" stressful—twice the rate of other professions.
- Be well organized. A teacher's day is busy, with many moving parts, and rotating schedules to follow. ...
- Backward design. ...
- Focus on the good and lead with your heart. ...
- Build trust early on and develop strong relationships as the year progresses.
Whether they are just starting out as a teacher, they are new to your center, or they're working with new people on your staff (or you are new to them), teachers can develop serious anxiety that can make the night before the first day of school quite tense.
Beginning teachers are often beset with fears: fear of not being in control of a class, fear of running out of teaching materials, fear of feeling embarrassed in front of a class, fear of not being able to answer a question, fear of being observed, to name but a few.
While it's not surprising that some students are shy, teachers are seen by most people as extroverts. Anyone can be shy but a teacher's job requires interaction with people on a daily basis. As a result, most consider the teaching profession a difficult one for shy people.
Teachers work longer hours than many other positions, which often leads to burnout and stress. Some of the many contributing factors are lack of resources, work-life balance and political issues. Teachers are losing what little time they have for planning due to sub shortages, which is stretching them thin.
The first year of teaching is the hardest. While being an educator is never without its struggles, the first year is by far the most challenging — pieced together with idealism, confusion, good intentions, excitement, fear, and expectations.

How do I not be nervous on the first day of teaching?
To get rid of first day of school jitters, try taking some long, deep breaths whenever you're feeling nervous by inhaling, holding for 3 seconds, and then exhaling. Also, try to smile throughout the day, even if you're feeling a little shy, since smiling can help you feel happier and more confident.
- Remember everyone's in the same boat. The great thing about starting a new class is everyone is in it together. ...
- There's no such thing as a stupid question. ...
- Set yourself small goals. ...
- Look out for others. ...
- Be yourself.
More than 50 teachers told Business Insider how the first day of school makes them feel. Most shared some variation of "excited," or "nervous," and some had mixed feelings. "It's sort of like Christmas," said one. "It's fun to start unwrapping each child's personality and figuring out how to help them learn and grow."
Perhaps the most common fear in all professions, not just teaching, is that of inadequacy. Whether you're a professional athlete or career politician, everyone has his or her own moments of doubt. As with the fear of not being prepared, you need only look back at how much you've already accomplished.
- Be prepared. ...
- Walk tall. ...
- Your classroom, your rules. ...
- Don't fear criticism, use it. ...
- Steer clear of Negative Nellie's. ...
- Realise your strengths.
Introverts can be teachers. They may not lead school assemblies or direct the marching band, but they play a critical role in every school. If you're an introvert who's passionate about teaching, don't hold yourself back—go for it!
You can still be a great teacher, even with social anxiety. But you do have to take care of yourself, be proactive, and listen to your doctor. As an aside, I did a lot of theater in high school, and I believe it helped lower my social anxiety.

Most possess the confidence and skills to speak to an individual, but public speaking for teachers is another thing altogether… One of the essential characteristics of being an educator is the ability to communicate effectively.
44% of teachers leave within the first five years in the profession. (That's well over a third of new teachers.) In general, newer teachers are 2 ½ times more likely to quit than those who are tenured. Regardless, an astounding 8% of teachers start over with a new career each year.
Why do so many teachers quit?
Teachers often cite working conditions, such as the support of their principals and the opportunity to collaborate with colleagues, as the top reason for leaving. More than 1 in 4 teachers who leave say they do so to pursue other career opportunities.
Stress, more so than low pay, is the main reason public school teachers quit. And now the coronavirus pandemic has increased the pressures put on teachers. That's according to newly released data from the RAND Corporation , which surveyed nearly 1,000 former public school teachers in December.

We have three tests to cover: reading, writing, and math. The pressure of those exams is what makes fourth grade the hardest elementary grade to teach, in my opinion.
- Holding their pee. ...
- Assigning daily homework. ...
- Punishing elementary students for being late to school. ...
- Asking kids what they did over break. ...
- Doing work after hours. ...
- Giving weekly spelling tests. ...
- Using classroom reward systems and treasure chests.
It's not easy being a student today. The expectations of growing into a professional well-capable of handling a volatile, uncertain, complex and ambiguous (VUCA) workspace is insurmountable.
Your induction year usually begins with your first paid teaching post and will help you to develop your teaching skills, building on what you have learned during your training and providing you with more experience. When you have successfully completed induction you should be able to teach confidently in any school.

If the dress code is something like “khaki pants or a skirt and collared shirt,” then you have more room to follow the dress code while still dressing smartly for your first day. My rule of thumb for the first day is dress one level above what you would normally wear day-to-day.
Plan for the first week—no more, no less. Use the first week to develop routines for using the bathroom, sharing ideas, getting materials, finding the daily schedule, and other important classroom techniques and procedures. Your goal is to have everyone on the same page by the end of the first week of school.
Teaching is an important and rewarding career, but it can also be draining and exhausting. Teaching is arguably harder now than ever before for many reasons, including student behavior, rapidly changing technology, and low pay.
