When to transition from toddler bed to twin bed?
On average, many kids switch to a twin bed between three- and four-years-old.
The name "toddler bed" gives a hint about the suggested age limits for its usefulness: it's for toddlers, which means up until preschool age. The CPSC describes toddler beds as reasonably expected for use by children under age 5.
While some toddlers are able to switch into a bed around 18 months, others might not transition until they're 30 months (2 1/2 years) old or even 3 to 3 1/2. Any time between these age ranges is considered normal.
A toddler bed may also feel more familiar to your child than a twin bed and thus make the transition easier, but this is usually a minor issue. Generally, we recommend that parents make the switch straight to a big kid bed, whether that be a twin size or full-size kids mattress.
If your child isn't a snuggler or feels safer in a smaller bed, there's definitely nothing wrong with going from crib to toddler bed to twin-sized bed—or any other variation. The most important thing is doing what's right for you and your child.
Approximately one-third of toddlers transition to a bed between the ages of 18 months and 2 years old, and another third transition between ages 2 and 2.5. In general, most toddlers make the move from a crib to a bed between the age of 18 months and 3 years old.
There is no "perfect" age for your child to make the transition from a crib to a bed; this generally takes place sometime between 1 1/2 and 3 years of age, but the particular time depends on a variety of considerations.
Some toddlers go straight into a single bed, whereas others make the move into a toddler bed that's smaller and usually closer to the floor. Toddler beds often have guard rails attached. If your toddler is moving into a single bed, you can attach a separate guardrail to prevent them from falling out.
Mattress or Bed Type | Mattress Size (WxL) | Recommended Age Range |
---|---|---|
Single Bed | 3'0" (90 cm, 35") x 6'3" (190 cm, 75") | 4 years and up |
European Single Bed | 3'0" (90 cm, 35") x 6'6" (200 cm, 78") | 4 years and up |
Small Double Bed | 4'0" (120 cm, 47") x 6'3" (190 cm, 75") | 8 years and up |
The standard toddler mattress size is the same as a crib mattress: 27 ¼ inches x 51 ⅝ inches. Many cribs—often called convertible cribs—turn into toddler beds using the same mattress.
Is a full size bed too big for a 2 year old?
Generally, a full-size mattress is appropriate for children once they reach around 8 or 10. However, if you notice your child has hit a sudden growth spurt, you may need to buy a mattress for them sooner.
If your toddler is young, consider transitioning to a toddler bed with rails. This is a smaller-sized bed that uses a crib mattress instead of a twin-sized mattress. A toddler can feel cozier and more secure in a toddler bed than in a twin bed, and that may make the transition easier for some toddlers.

Cot beds are cots that convert into toddler beds. They are usually larger than cots but not as large as a single bed. Most cot beds will last until a child is around 5 years old, making the transition to a real bed that little bit easier.
Sleeping in the same bed with your children (co-sleeping) is a parent decision, not a medical decision. In general, bed-sharing is not recommended because it results in poor sleep for many parents. Also, once begun, it's a hard habit to break. So think carefully before you allow your child to start sharing your bed.
Toddler beds are suitable for children aged between 2 years – approximately 5-7 years. Offering a step into independence yet maintaining proportions that may be more suited to a younger child; toddler beds make a great first kids bed.
No problem with giving her a double. You will never get her out of it though so don't expect to take it back once you've done the extension. People do laugh when they find out but why anyone cares what size mattress he's on is beyond me. My 2 year old is in a double, plenty of room for dollies and teddy bears!
Full-Size Bed
A full-sized or "double" bed is another option for a three year old. Between 74 and 75 inches, full beds are the same length as a twin, but they are 54 inches wide. For children who like to snuggle with parents before sleeping, the full is a comfortable option.
The Consumer Product Safety Commission recommends waiting to introduce pillows to your little one's sleep routine until they reach 1 1/2 years old (18 months). This recommendation is based on what experts know about sudden infant death syndrome (SIDS) and its cousin, sudden unexplained death in childhood (SUDC).
Your 1- to 2-year-old should still sleep in a safe, secure crib. Before a child's first birthday, blankets are not recommended because of the possible risk of SIDS. But at this age, it's OK to put a light blanket in your child's crib.
Keep the nightly routine the same as it was when she was in the crib. Calmly and silently return your toddler to bed as many times as it takes. Praise your child for practicing good bedtime habits. Eventually, she'll adjust to her new sleep spot and the crib will become a distant memory.
