Saint Rose of Lima (in Spanish, Santa Rosa de Lima) is the patron saint of Peru and of all South America. She was the first person born in the Western Hemisphere to be made a saint (canonized) by the Roman Catholic Church. Isabel de Flores was born into a wealthy family on April 20, 1586, in Lima, Peru.
The patron saint of Latin America, indigenous Americans, and the Philippines, Saint Rose of Lima is known for her extreme piety, severe asceticism, and care of the needy.
Even though she is pictured with a Dominican habit, St. Rose of Lima was not a religious nun.
Rose of Lima (born Isabel Flores de Oliva; 20 April 1586 – 24 August 1617) was a member of the Third Order of Saint Dominic in Lima, Peru, who became known for both her life of severe penance and her care of the poverty stricken of the city through her own private efforts.

Roses represent the Virgin Mary
Roses were associated with Mary from early times. The thirteenth century Saint Dominic is credited with spreading the familiar devotion called the Rosary of the Blessed Virgin Mary, a series of prayers to Our Lady, symbolised by garlands of roses worn in Heaven.
In her last long, painful sickness, this heroic young woman prayed: "Lord, increase my sufferings, and with them increase Your love in my heart." Exhausted from her many penances, Rose died of a fever and paralysis at age 31. She was canonized in 1671 by Pope Clement X and became the first American saint.
