Why are investment bankers so rich?
Investment bankers make money through the fees charged to their clients. As discussed above, this includes underwriting fees for arranging the sale of securities and advisory fees for providing strategic guidance.
Successful mid-career investment bankers can make tens of millions of dollars a year.
Investment Banking Career Path
Increasingly, analysts that do stay are getting promoted directly to associate (going "A to A") after two years. As an associate, compensation rises significantly. The next level up is Vice President, which can make upwards of 500k.
More experienced managing directors and partners can earn several million dollars per year. Bonuses make up the majority of an investment banker's total compensation and are largely influenced by individual performance and bank profits.
However, none of the major jurisdictions we analyzed saw bankers sleeping more than seven hours on average. Breaking down by bank yielded similar results – except at JPMorgan. JPMorgan's bankers told us they slept a whopping 7.2 hours a night, on average, more than those at any of their major rivals.
Investment Banking Managing Director Salary + Bonus: Base salaries are in the mid-six-figure range, with total compensation in the high six figures to low seven figures. An MD doing decently should earn between $1 and $3 million per year, and sometimes a low multiple of that (as of 2022).
When do investment bankers retire? This varies widely. But on average, the oldest full-time execs I saw were in their early to mid-50s. A banker's retirement age (much like that of any profession) really depends on what his motivations are.
There are a few jobs that make a million or more dollars per year. Some of these jobs include investment bankers, surgeons, and CEOs of major corporations. However, there are a few other jobs that make a million or more per year that are not as well-known. One such job is a professional gambler.

What pays more tech or finance?
Both finance and tech offer lucrative career opportunities, and the highest-paying field between the two can vary depending on various factors such as location, job role, and level of expertise. However, it is generally observed that the tech industry tends to have higher earning potential compared to finance.
Compensation at investment banks hasn't changed much since the 2008 financial crisis, with managing directors still earning an average $1.9 million a year, amid mounting regulatory pressure. Equity partners at top law firms, meanwhile, can make from $3 million to more than $15 million annually.
Investment bankers work notoriously long hours, with the typical work week filling in 60-80 hours per week, and the occasional high-intensity work week that can push a banker to 100+ hours.
Have you ever heard of Goldman Sachs' 15-minute rule at Goldman Sachs? It means you have to respond to an email in 15 minutes or less no matter what. It doesn't matter if you: - showering - hiking in the mountains - attending your son's wedding - saving someone from a drowning vehicle Unreasonable?
In summary, I think you can generally expect most of your weeks in investment banking to be between 60 and 80 hours. I'd say 60 hours is doable, while 80 hours will really start to push you. I think anyone who says that they work 100 hours on average is probably lying.
The field of investment banking has many people who want to be highly successful, and your peers are likely to work just as hard as you. The job requires intelligence and analytical capabilities, and colleagues and clients may need to perform at a high level to maintain their competitiveness.

While investment banks look for a diverse skill set in their workforce, there's a particular focus on mathematical reasoning and ability. This means that school-level Maths (if not Further Maths) is almost always necessary. Other mathematical subjects such as Physics and Computer Science can also be helpful.
"Most people who get entry-level jobs in banking are aged 20 to 25 years-old," says one former trader. "Once you get beyond 28 years-old, it becomes a lot more difficult to get a front office job (in trading, sales or M&A) in a bank," he adds. "Of course, there will always be exceptions, but it's tough."
Is 30 too old for investment banking?
And if you have more than 3 – 5 years of pre-MBA full-time work experience and then do an MBA, it will become difficult to win an Associate-level role (most are under the age of 30, but the upper limit is probably closer to 35).
Banks don't break out investment banker headcount specifically, but data released last week by research firm Coalition, suggests investment banker headcount across the industry fell only 4% year-on-year in the first half, which is when many of the cuts at Goldman and Morgan Stanley took place.
Those earning over $10m per year mostly work in management and finance, though there are significant numbers in sales, real estate, operations, medicine, law, engineering and art at this level. In fact, art has a bulge both at the bottom and at the very highest level of earnings – the celebrities.
Retiring at 55 with $2.5 million is certainly feasible, as evidenced by the fact that this is far more than the vast majority of people have when they stop working.
Summary. $2 million is far above the average retirement savings in the US. $2 million should afford you to enjoy a comfortable and happy retirement. If you choose to retire at 50, a retirement savings fund of $2 million would provide you with $50,000 annually.
