EastEnders confirms Gray Atkins' fate after serial killer's arrest (2024)

EastEnders spoilers follow.

EastEnders has revealed serial killer Gray Atkins' fate in tonight's episode after he was finally arrested for his crimes in dramatic scenes earlier this month.

Over the years, EastEnders fans have seen Gray concealing his evil secrets from his family, friends and the rest of Albert Square after murdering his wife Chantelle, Tina Carter and Kush Kazemi, as well as abusing his new wife Chelsea.

As the truth began to come out in Walford, however, a desperate Gray (Toby-Alexander Smith) ended up in violent confrontations with many residents of the Square – including Chelsea, Karen, Shirley and Mick – before heading to the bridge and attempting to jump, but he was later stopped by Whitney (Shona McGarty) and ultimately arrested.

It marked actor Toby-Alexander Smith's final scenes as Gray and while the character didn't physically return in tonight's (March 28) episode, the Walford residents did finally get an update on his fate as it was confirmed he had pleaded guilty to his crimes.

The news was confirmed in a scene in the café as Whitney walked up to Chelsea (Zaraah Abrahams) to question what she'd seen.

"Is this a wind-up?" she asked, gesturing at her phone. "Gray's pleaded guilty. He's actually told the truth for once."

"That's what I thought at first," Chelsea confirmed. "Except it means there's no need for a trial."

"Wait, so we don't get to go to court? And look him in the eye?" Whitney questioned, while Chelsea admitted that she sees Gray every time she looks at her son Jordan.

"Chelsea, that ain't Gray," Whitney told her. "That's your son. Your beautiful little boy. The one good thing is that you get to move on with your life now. Both of you. It will get better, I promise. Give it a chance."

Later, Chelsea's mum Denise entered and also insisted it was a good thing that there would be no trial despite Whitney's upset over the news.

"Surely that's good news, for all of us," Denise said. "It means we don't have to face him again."

Later, Kheerat (Jaz Deol) and Stacey (Lacey Turner) also toasted the news at the Queen Vic, with Kheerat saying: "To Gray dying old and lonely in prison."

"And to you helping to put him there," Stacey replied.

With Gray pleading guilty off-screen and a lengthy stint in prison ahead of him, it looks like EastEnders fans won't be seeing Gray on-screen again any time soon.

Speaking about his character's exit earlier this month, actor Toby-Alexander told Digital Spy that he thought it was a "satisfying end" to the years-long storyline.

"I think all of the audience have obviously wanted justice for Chantelle, Tina and Kush for so long and it was important that we showed that justice and that comeuppance," he said.

"There was no room for him to have an easy way out and it would have been wrong if they'd have done that. I do think, from the audience's perspective, it's a satisfying ending to the storyline."
