For passing water, space travellers use specially-made funnels that connect to urine recovery units. Each astronaut has their own custom-shaped funnel. Variants are also available for women. As for number twos, astronauts back themselves up on to a unit similar to a conventional toilet seat. To stop them floating away at the crucial moment, handles are clamped over the thighs so that, shall we say, the docking arrangement remains intact.
