Packing for a Disney vacation can be a stressful experience. It can be worsened by finding out that there is a dress code policy in the Walt Disney World Resort and that you can be refused entry to the Disney Parks if you violate it.
So how can you avoid being dress-coded at Disney? Follow these rules, and you can’t go wrong!
Keep your shoes on!
Comfortable walking shoes are recommended by The Walt Disney Company when visiting the Walt Disney World Resort. It’s no surprise that Guests walk plenty of steps each day, quickly hitting five-figure numbers. Suitable shoes for the Disney Parks are unique to each Guest. While you may prefer to wear trainers, another member of your party may choose sandals or flip-flops. Whichever shoe you choose to explore the Disney theme parks in, you’ll need to keep them on. You don’t want your day ruined by stepping on glass or burning your feet on the hot floor. A Walt Disney World Cast Member can also ask you to put your shoes on should you be seen barefoot.
Shoes must also be worn when riding Disney attractions. The exception to this is Soarin’ Around The World in EPCOT theme park. We love to slip our shoes off as we take flight!
Wear a shirt!
All Guests are required to wear a shirt when visiting the Disney Parks. Of course, shirts are not required around the Disney water parks for apparent reasons. However, your top half must be suitably covered when spending time in a Disney Park. Remember to keep your shirt and shorts on when riding Kali River Rapids in Disney’s Animal Kingdom too.
No obscene language or images
The Walt Disney World Resort is a family environment. As such, offensive language on clothing is not permitted. Guests can be refused entry to or removed from the Disney Parks should their clothing display such language. Similarly, inappropriate graphics or images are not permitted on clothing. They can cause offense or distress to other Guests, including children. Guests have been known to be dress-coded for such clothing details, so take steps to prevent you from also being dress-coded.
Tattoos, including obscene language or images, are also not permitted around the Walt Disney World Resort. Guests with such tattoos must ensure that the tattoo is covered to avoid being dress-coded.
Make sure it’s not torn.
Excessive tears in clothing are not permitted in the Walt Disney World Resort. Such clothing can result in excessive amounts of skin being visible, and potentially parts of the body too, that are not suitable to be shown in a family environment. Small tears will likely be acceptable, but we recommend leaving torn clothing at home to avoid the risk of being dress-coded.
Tears in your clothing can also expose the skin, increasing sunburn risk. We all know how painful sunburn can be, and you don’t want it to spoil your Disney vacation.
Avoid excess layers
All Guests entering the Disney Parks and Disney Springs must pass through security. While security scanners can scan through clothing, they may run into some difficulty if you plan on wearing excessive layers. The Walt Disney Company reserves the right to search you if you wear clothing with multiple layers. Avoid wearing excessive layers to quicken up your entry into the Disney Parks and Disney Springs. Generally, the weather in Florida would make doing so uncomfortable anyway, except for during the winter months or cold spells.
Take care with accessories.
Some accessories are permitted to be worn by Guests throughout Walt Disney World. Mouse ears and mouse ear hats are probably the most popular accessories you plan on wearing during your Disney vacation. Other hats are also allowed if they do not cover your face. As such, masks are not allowed to be worn. Younger Guests and those who are young at heart are allowed to wear plastic wings and tutus and carry toy swords and light sabers. However, sharp objects, weapons, and toy guns are not permitted throughout the Disney Parks.
No Costumes!
Unfortunately, Guests aged 14 and older are not permitted to wear costumes in Walt Disney World except at Disney Halloween events. Meanwhile, Guests under the age of 14 are allowed to dress in costume. If your little one would like to wear a mask, you must ensure that their peripheral vision is not obstructed and their eyes can be fully seen when wearing the mask.
So, you’re planning to attend Mickey’s Not-So-Scary Halloween Party? Then it’s acceptable to dress in costume. The Magic Kingdom Park event celebrates Halloween in style. Guests of all ages can join the fun and dress as their favorite Disney character or in a Disney Park-inspired costume. Just ensure you won’t be signing autographs or posing for photos with other Guests. If you plan on wearing a cape, it must not reach below your waist. For longer costumes, you must ensure they do not have a train or touch the ground.
Disney Bounding
If you were hoping to be able to dress in character during your time in Walt Disney World, why not consider Disney bounding instead? Put together an outfit that consists of regular clothing but in the colors or style of a favorite Disney character. Accessorize with mouse ears or a backpack to enhance your outfit.
