Is Walt Disney World’s Most Infamous Attraction In Danger of Closing Forever? (2024)

The one thing everybody, whether they’re a Disney fan or not, knows about Walt Disney World is that it’s overwhelmingly dedicated to its family-friendly atmosphere.

While there are undoubtedly areas and references only adults will catch, Magic Kingdom, Animal Kingdom, Hollywood Studios, and EPCOT are all mostly catered to the kids. However, there have always been attractions that are a little too intense for most little ones.

Examples include Hollywood Studios’ Twilight Zone Tower of Terror, Animal Kingdom’s Expedition Everest – Legend of the Forbidden Mountain, and EPCOT’s Mission: SPACE.

Unlike the two other thrill rides, however, Mission: SPACE isn’t just unsuitable for some little ones. It’s also become infamous among adult Guests as well due to how intense the attraction can be and for the physical reactions the ride can cause as a result.

For anyone who doesn’t know, Mission: SPACE simulates a NASA mission in which Guests either take off for Mars (the more intense Orange Mission, which utilizes centrifuge technology) or orbit around Earth (the less severe Green Mission.

Although the Green Mission is considered tame, the Orange Mission has left many Guests feeling unwell for the rest of the day. In extremely rare cases, the Orange Mission has even caused the deaths of a couple of Guests, both of whom had pre-existing conditions which were aggravated by the intensity of the attraction.

Because this thrill ride has caused so many Guests to feel downright lousy, it’s become incredibly infamous amongst Disney fans. Typically, you either love or hate it (if you’ve been brave enough to experience it for yourself, that is).

It’s no secret that Walt Disney World has been revamping and updating its parks recently. While EPCOT finishes its historical transformation, Animal Kingdom begins tearing DinoLand U.S.A. down, and Magic Kingdom rethemes Splash Mountain.

In short, the spirit of change is in the air, and EPCOT may decide to close Mission: SPACE forever due to its infamy. That being said, the Walt Disney Company hasn’t made any indication or hints towards removing or closing the intense thrill ride, despite many Guests’ outcries for something different.
