Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) issued the following community message on Friday, May 24:

Graduation Ceremonies Kick Off May 29, Featuring Notable Speakers

More than 12,000 Montgomery County Public Schools (MCPS) students are expected to receive their high school diplomas during commencement ceremonies scheduled between Wednesday, May 29, and Wednesday, June 12.

Among those who will speak: Karine Jean-Pierre, White House press secretary, who will speak at Thomas S. Wootton High School; Aruna Miller, Lt. Gov. of Maryland, who will speak at Northwest High School; David Vanterpool, assistant coach of the Washington Wizards, who will speak at Montgomery Blair High School.Read more.

Session One Enrollment for Regional and Central High School Summer School Closes May 31

Session one of theRegional Summer High School Program(in-person) andCentral High School Summer Program(virtual) enrollment closes Friday, May 31. In both programs, the first session will run from June 26-July 16 (no class on July 4); the second session will run from July 18-Aug. 6. Session 2 enrollment closes Sunday, June 30. Parents can register students on their ParentVue accounts.Read more.

Student Service Learning Hours Forms Due May 31

The deadline to have Student Service Learning (SSL) forms turned in is Friday, May 31.All SSL formsfor any service completed after June 1, 2023, must be submitted to a student’s SSLmiddle school coordinatororhigh school coordinatorby the systemwide deadline of Friday, May 31. After May 31, SSL forms will no longer be accepted for service completed during the 2023-2024 school year or the summer prior. Students must earn 75 SSL hours in order to graduate from high school.

Pride Community Day Set for June 1

Pride Community Day will be held from 1:30-5 p.m. on Saturday, June 1 at Bethesda-Chevy Chase High School. This family-friendly event will include a talent show, games, DJ and dancing, crafts, storytime, food trucks and prizes. There will also be a resource fair and workshops geared toward caregivers and staff.Read more.

Girls’ Flag Football is Coming to MCPS for the fall 2024 Season!

Skills clinicsare available during the first week of June for high school students interested in joining a girls’ flag football team this fall. MCPS will be piloting girls’ flag football at all 25 high schools during the upcoming Fall 2024 season through a partnership with the Baltimore Ravens and Under Armourannounced in April.

Sessions will be held on June 4, 5 and 6 at Walter Johnson, John F. Kennedy and Seneca Valley high schools fields.

Kensington Parkwood Student Chosen as State Winner in Doodle for Google Student Contest

Sofia, a second grader from Kensington Parkwood Elementary School, could soon have her art on the Google homepage for hundreds of millions to see. Sofia is one of the 55 U.S. state and territory winners with her Doodle in the Doodle for Google contest.Read more.

Nearly 300 Dual-Enrollment Students Honored at Ceremony

Nearly 300 seniors were recognized for completing the dual-enrollment program at a ceremony on Wednesday, May 15 at the Universities at Shady Grove. In partnership with Montgomery College (MC), the program allows for high school students to take college courses during the fall, winter, and spring terms with the opportunity to complete up to two years of college at no cost. Most students will receive associate degrees from the college.

Performing Arts Students Shine in Awards Celebration

Dozens of MCPS high school seniors were recognized for their accomplishments in dance, theatre performance, technical theatre, choral and instrumental music, media arts, and 2D and 3D visual art at the 23rd annual Superintendent’s All-County Fine Arts Awards Celebration on May 20 at Seneca Valley High School.Check out the photo gallery.

Gaithersburg High School Hosts Annual Special Education Prom

More than 100 students from Watkins Mill, Albert Einstein and Wheaton high schools joined Gaithersburg students in the school café for the annual Special Education Prom. This a catered event came, complete with a DJ and dancing. The annual event also welcomed paraeducators and parents, along with a “Trojan Royalty” court. The prom was sponsored by the school’s Student Government Association and was supported by photography and cosmetology classes.

Free English Classes at Montgomery College

Montgomery County residents can learn English at no cost. Montgomery College offers English classes in person and virtually. In the new episode of “Comunicándonos,” Emma Wilson, an Adult English Class and Education Administrator, will share information about the free classes offered by the college.
