Overview

As the cook of the Straw Hat Pirates, Sanji provides an extremely valuable service to his crewmates. Alongside Luffy and Zoro, Sanji is considered one of the Monster Trio (怪物三人組, Kaibutsu San-ningumi?) of the Straw Hats due to his strength.[21][22] Because of their role as Luffy's main support, Zoro and Sanji are referred to as the Pirates King's Wings (海賊王の両翼, Kaizoku-ō no ryōyoku?).[23] Despite his great strength, Sanji tends to be underestimated by the World Government and has almost never been in the top three highest bounties, with one exception after the events of Whole Cake Island, when he ranked third. Sanji currently has the fourth highest bounty among the Straw Hat Pirates after Luffy, Zoro, and Jinbe, at Sanji/Abilities and Powers (2)1,032,000,000.[5] Alongside Jinbe, Sanji is one of two members of the crew to fight without weapons or Devil Fruit powers in combat, until acquiring the Raid Suit, but then abandoned it as his dormant genetic enhancements awakened.

While Luffy often fights the strongest enemies, Sanji and Zoro often end up fighting against enemies considered the second or third primary threat. However, Sanji's and Zoro's opponents could be often characterized as matching (or countering) their particular fighting styles, such as his fight against another leg-based martial artist, Mr. 2, during the Arabasta Arc, while Zoro fought against Mr. 1, an assassin who ate a Paramecia-type Devil Fruit that made him a Fullbody Bladed Human resistant to swords. Although Sanji and Zoro usually let their rivalry impede their fighting performances, they have proven to be a near-unstoppable force if they agree to cooperate for the battle.[24]

As a member of the infamous Vinsmoke Family, Sanji was raised and trained from an early age alongside the rest of his siblings in warfare and combat. Their father modified them while their mother was still pregnant in order to endow them with superhuman abilities. However, due to Sora's own attempt at ensuring her sons would keep their emotions using a counter-drug, Sanji's genetic modifications were repressed, and he was born a normal human.

Because of this, Sanji could not keep up with Germa's extremely grueling training, resulting in his father's renouncement of him. However, he ended up encountering Zeff, a pirate captain turned chef who would teach him his own kick-based martial art, resulting in him attaining natural superhuman physical abilities and skills that have proven efficient against many powerful opponents. After joining the Straw Hat Pirates, he could defeat fish-men like Kuroobi, powerful assassins like Mr. 2, and mighty CP9 agents like Jabra. As a result, he earned a bounty of Sanji/Abilities and Powers (3)77,000,000 before exiting Paradise.[12]

Since returning from his training in the Kamabakka Kingdom and entering the New World, Sanji's strength grew exponentially and he has become an even more a powerful combatant, able to fight against some of the strongest pirates and fighters there. After the two-year timeskip, he became capable of breaking the stronger-than-steel neck of a Pacifista with a single Diable Jambe-enhanced kick, whereas his leg would have been seriously injured after using the attack twice on a Pacifista pre-timeskip. Against Charlotte Oven, Sanji could break his collarbone with a simple kick while moving too fast for his eye to follow, despite him being gifted with the sturdiest body of all the Charlotte sons. On Fish-Man Island, his kicks could injure the enormous fish-man Wadatsumi, who size even surpassed that of an ancient giant, and dealt him a critical blow. Sanji proved to be more than a match against his genetically modified siblings, Niji and Yonji, despite their bulletproof exoskeletons, breaking the former's jaw and smashing the latter's cheek in respectively, and only later losing against them on purpose due to their threats against Zeff. On top of the Whole Cake Chateau, he blocked a lightning-enhanced attack from the Emperor Big Mom with one of his techniques and Luffy's assistance.

During the Raid on Onigashima, he (alongside Marco) could hold off two All-Stars of the Beasts Pirates, King and Queen, while buying enough time for Zoro to recover. Afterwards, Sanji could temporarily overwhelm and fight on par with Queen, a top henchman of the Emperor Kaidou, and an Ancient Zoan user with extensive cybernetic enhancements and a bounty of Sanji/Abilities and Powers (4)1,320,000,000. After wearing his Raid Suit for a third and final time, Sanji's latent genetic modifications were awakened during the same battle, which allowed him to gain the advantage over the All-Star and finally defeat him using a powerful combination of blue flaming kicks.

As a former prince of the Germa Kingdom, it can be assumed that Sanji would have had the same political and military power possessed by the rest of his family. However, due to his decision to renounce his title and status as a royal (as well as his father's decision to cast him out of the family), Sanji has willingly given up any and all claims to these kinds of advantages. Despite this, it has been shown that he still retains political authority over the Germa Kingdom's subjects as shown during his childhood, where the rest of the kingdom treated him with the same respect as they treated the rest of his family (despite his family's own poor treatment of him), and when he returned to the kingdom after 13 years, they continued to do so.

Culinary Expertise

Self-taught since childhood and also personally trained by Zeff, Sanji is an exceptional culinary master of the highest caliber, possessing immense knowledge and the capability of preparing almost any kind of delicious food with a strong sense for the aesthetics of cooking. He cooks with amazing speed and dexterity, particularly in his use of knives. His sense of taste is also not lacking. Often, he is able to deduce the qualities of aspects (i.e., ingredients and methods of cooking and preparation) involved in a prepared dish in a very short period of time. He has an extremely sharp sense of smell, as he correctly figured out all the ingredients Streusen used for the wedding cake and even perfectly figured out Streusen's secret recipe solely by its fragrance, a feat that completely shocked Chiffon and the 31 Head Chefs of Whole Cake Island.[25] He is also shown skilled enough to turn inedible ingredients like fish bones into a full course of delicious dishes.

By the end of the two-year timeskip, it has been shown that Sanji has already won the 99 recipes of the Kamabakka Kingdom's Attack Cuisine as prizes for managing to defeat the Okama Kenpo masters on Momoiro.

In addition to preparing food, Sanji is also extremely skilled in writing recipes, as one of the recipes left behind in the Thousand Sunny allowed Nami to cook a perfect seafood dish.

According to Chiffon, Sanji's cooking skills have surpassed even Streusen, Totto Land's finest chef. He was able to completely remake a giant wedding cake in less than twelve hours, where it took Streusen several days to make the first cake. The cake was so delicious, it made Big Mom, a sweets enthusiast who had spent her entire life eating all sorts of treats from all over the world, fall into a state of absolute bliss that she had not known since her sixth birthday party.

While in Wano Country, Sanji worked as a soba chef and his cooking was immensely popular with the citizens.

Attack Cuisine

Sanji/Abilities and Powers (5)

Attack Cuisine (攻めの料理, Seme no Ryōri?) is a special kind of cooking only found in the Kamabakka Kingdom. According to Sanji, the cuisine emanates a powerful aura and flavor to the one consuming it. It is said by Emporio Ivankov that it builds up the physical side of the human body; he even vouches for it as the reason why the inhabitants of the Kamabakka Kingdom have fit and powerful physiques. While the Attack Cuisine is not denied to outsiders, and is in fact freely offered, only the people who have gone through the "Bride Training" and have become users of the Newkama Kenpo are told the 99 vital recipes of the Attack Cuisine. Exceptions to this rule may occur, as seen when Ivankov gave Sanji a challenge to earn the recipes. The challenge was to defeat the 99 Newkama Kenpo masters who are in possession of the 99 recipes while avoiding becoming an okama. Sanji accepted the challenge[26] and eventually conquered it.

As of yet, only two of the 99 recipes have been revealed in detail:

  • Hormone Soup with Sea Pork (海ブタ肉入りホルモンスープ, Umibuta-niku iri Horumon Suupu?): A large pot of soup made from pork with laced hormones. It is able to rejuvenate the consumer's energy and strength.[27] In the Viz manga, this is called Offal Soup with Sea-Pig Meat.
  • Simsim Whip (シムシムホイップ, Shimushimu Hoippu?): A special type of whipped cream Sanji made while making a cake to calm Big Mom's rage. It is described as the ultimate cream (究極クリーム?)[28] and, according to Sanji, it is the essence of sweetness.[29] Its taste is so delicious, it can cause people who eat it to nearly die in utter bliss as shown with Buche and Capone Bege. Bege described the sensation as being hypnotized.

Physical Abilities

Blueno, don't underestimate that guy! He doesn't have a bounty... But he's likely one of their main fighters!

Kaku on Sanji's exceptional level of power.[30]

Due to years of arduous training under Zeff since childhood, Sanji has gained extraordinary superhuman strength, resiliency, speed, and agility, even before his latent genetic enhancements awoke, enabling him to use an array of handstands for a kick-based martial art that makes him immensely versatile in combat.

Strength

Sanji/Abilities and Powers (6)

Sanji has immense physical strength. In his first appearance, he held Fullbody up by the neck unsupported with one hand before even displaying his lower body strength. During the Arlong Park Arc, he could stop Kuroobi from killing Genzo and Nojiko in the water by grabbing onto his leg despite the natural advantage and strength a fish-man receives when submerged. At Little Garden, he hauled a dead Tyrannosaurus rex through the jungle and back to the Going Merry with little effort. On Skypiea, while Gan Fall was explaining Dials, Sanji was able to lift a huge sledgehammer and used it to test an Impact Dial. Thanks to his inhuman strength, he is one of the few capable chefs to keep up with Luffy's insane appetite.

After Luffy and Usopp dueled in Water 7, Sanji was able to easily restrain Chopper in Heavy Point from going to treat Usopp's injuries. While escaping Enies Lobby, Sanji, alongside Zoro, could catch three cannonballs (using Luffy's body) and throw them back with enough strength to destroy a Marine battleship. In the Thriller Bark Arc, Sanji could hold Nami above his head and keep her balanced while receiving countless attacks on his body from Absalom before setting her down and holding the extremely heavy pirate in place with only one hand, despite being struck multiple times while doing so.[31] On Zou, Sanji lifted a massive pile of wounded minks with little help. After repeated usage of his Raid Suit fully awakened his genetic enhancements, Sanji's constitution evolved and granted him genetically enhanced physical might, gaining a massive increase to his previous level of strength that allows him to exert an overwhelming amount of force in his kicks with only moderate effort. With his newfound strength, Sanji was able to knock Queen in his immensely heavy brachiosaurus hybrid form flying through several walls in the Pleasure Hall[32] (which he previously struggled to do so before, even with Diable Jambe),[33] and broke his advanced cybernetic arm while being slammed by it through several stone walls.[34] A fully enraged kick, bolstered by Sanji's newfound strength and Ifrit Jambe, was enough to knock Queen unconscious and send him through the Skull Dome, off Onigashima, and into the air.[35]

Durability and Endurance

Sanji/Abilities and Powers (7)

Sanji's endurance and durability are immense. Even as a child, when he was still considered physically weak, he survived his three superhuman brothers' brutal and frequent beatings. Combined with the years of extremely intense physical training under Zeff into his young adulthood, and Sanji's body has become tremendously tough. He survived decompression when Kuroobi forced him down through the water in Arlong Park's deep swimming pool and quickly recovered from Kuroobi's Fish-Man Karate attacks, even underwater, where a fish-man's strength is magnified. Enel's El Thor, an attack so powerful that it disintegrated a normal man earlier in the Skypiea Arc and took out the giant snake Nola, was incapable of destroying Sanji's body; instead, he withstood the lightning blast at point-blank range and was still able to stand and mock the Logia user before collapsing.

He was caught off guard and almost beaten to death by Kalifa after being immobilized by her bubble powers, but later recovered and mustered the strength to fight against Jabra, the third strongest member of CP9, withstanding his incredibly potent Rankyaku and Tekkai attacks and defeating him with a mighty kick even after being stabbed by half of the latter's Gekko Jusshigan. He was stabbed in the back by Absalom with a knife long enough to go through his chest and still managed to defeat him with relative ease, showing a great tolerance for pain. Sanji remained conscious after being hit by Bartholomew Kuma's Ursus Shock, an attack that devastated an entire island, despite having just endured an exhausting battle with the giant zombie Oars before being knocked out by Zoro. Later at the Sabaody Archipelago, Sanji survived a Pacifista laser beam being shot through his chest.

After the timeskip, Sanji's endurance also increased. He withstood 5,000 meters of underwater pressure without a coating, a depth that would have crushed a submarine. He took direct punches from both Jinbe and Luffy to the head, from both sides simultaneously, with relatively minor injuries (though he was left bleeding on the ground). While Nami was inside his body, it was tough enough to withstand a direct explosion from Caesar Clown's Gastanet, and after recovering his body, Sanji could still fight on par with Vergo. When his right fibula was fractured by Vergo, despite initially reacting to the pain, he continued fighting him with his injured leg and did not show any more signs of discomfort afterwards.[36] During his confrontation with Donquixote Doflamingo near Green Bit, Sanji only suffered minor injuries from the Warlord's initial attacks. Sanji withstood powerful attacks from his family, recovering quickly from Judge's spear attacks and Niji's electrical blows.

Sanji/Abilities and Powers (8)

Sanji was unharmed after taking a Raid Suit-enhanced kick to the face, despite the force of the blow being powerful enough to send him flying through the ground and into a wall.[37] Even when a gelatinous mask veiled Sanji's swollen and injured face, he remained unfazed when Nami slapped him.[38] Sanji even shrugged off a bullet wound to the arm while protecting Luffy from Charlotte Oven's army on Cacao Island and did not notice it until Chopper pointed it out. After being brutally beaten by Black Maria, Sanji recovered and reentered the main fray, surviving the combined onslaught of All-Stars King and Queen. After his genetic enhancements fully awakened, his overall durability and endurance immensely increased and combined with his exoskeleton, allowed him to resist assaults that would have previously been lethal. Examples include a strike from Queen's dao sword to the head, which broke the weapon instead and shrugging multiple bullets to the head without using Busoshoku Haki. He took Queen's Henry Queen and Winch Queen attacks head-on without flinching. His newly gained durability and exoskeleton most prominently allow him to use the far more powerful Ifrit Jambe, and he can withstand the unbearably intense flames and heat it generates.

Speed and Agility

Sanji/Abilities and Powers (9)

Sanji is not only strong; he is one of the fastest members of the crew.[39] His agility, reflexes, and speed are tremendous, rivalling that of Brook and even Luffy's Gear 2. In his first fight against the Krieg Pirates, Sanji moved so fast that he appeared to be disappearing and reappearing. At Little Garden, Sanji avoided machine gun fire from Miss Friday, and in Jaya, he dodged Mont Blanc Cricket's gunshot at point-blank range. After dodging one of Wanze's attacks, Sanji instantly kicked him in the face twelve times, with the former miscalculating the number of blows. Even when up against the lightning-fast CP9 and their formidable Rokushiki techniques, Sanji proved his mobility by countering Kalifa's Soru with ease and forcing her to the ground, causing the assassin to marvel at how fast the cook was. He also mustered enough centrifugal force to slightly break through the guarding power of Blueno's Tekkai with a single kick to the side. Sanji was able to dodge an onslaught of blows from Oars, causing Luffy's shadow to get annoyed.

Due to fleeing from the okama in the Kamabakka Kingdom for two years, Sanji's already impressive speed increased massively. Sanji was able to dodge Vergo's kick when it was centimeters from his face, and in Dressrosa he took out a sniper who was 16 meters above the ground and claimed it was "nothing" to Viola. Sanji was confident that he could avoid a point-blank shot from Pudding and he proved fast enough to dodge Charlotte Katakuri's jelly bean projectile from several meters away; an exceptional feat, as Katakuri is an extremely skilled Kenbunshoku Haki user and could not foresee Sanji being swift enough to dodge his shot.

Additionally, had Katakuri not interfered with the natural flow of events, Sanji would have dodged a point-blank gunshot from the priest, which is a further testament to his speed.[40] While Pound was trying to defend Chiffon from Oven, Sanji was able to instantly kick Oven away and grab Chiffon with neither Pound nor Oven noticing.[41] After awakening his genetic enhancements, Sanji's speed and agility increased tremendously, enabling him to casually move so fast that his opponent Queen first mistook his swiftness for invisibility. He also could attack Queen with Ifrit Jambe-enhanced kicks numerous times with such overwhelming velocity the latter could not react at all.

Genetic Modifications

Further information: Modified Humans

When Sanji was a child, he was weaker than his siblings (who always outpaced him) to the point that he was considered a disappointment and a failure to his family. This was due to the drug that his mother took during her pregnancy to ensure Sanji would still have his humanity, thus resulting in him being born without any apparent genetic enhancements, much to Judge's fury.[42]

Sanji/Abilities and Powers (10)

However, during the Raid on Onigashima, Sanji noted that after three uses of the Raid Suit that his body began to feel different, and even in some cases, "better", which perplexed him early on during his fight with Queen.[43] Later on, in his fight with Queen, Sanji angrily realized that the genetic modifications that laid dormant within him since birth have finally awakened, granting him a superhuman physical constitution, an exoskeleton that makes him nearly invulnerable, and an accelerated healing rate. After surviving being crushed to death, Sanji stood back up, even with all of his bones broken, shocking everyone as his body snapped back into place and reformed. Queen then struck Sanji with his sword, only for the blade to shatter against Sanji's neck, with Sanji only feeling minor pain and annoyance as a result.[44] He would then pull his cheek back into place and also withstood several bullets to the head by the Beasts Pirates without any injury. [45]

After realizing that his genetic modifications only awakened due to him wearing his Raid Suit, Sanji chose to accept the changes to his body, but not before destroying the canister that held his suit to permanently cut off his ties to Germa. After mastering his new gifts to some level, he discovered that he has become so fast that it is as if he can become invisible without the suit and his already impressive strength has grown to a level far greater than he would have imagined.[46] By combining all these augmentations to his body and his Busoshoku Haki, Sanji developed fighting techniques that would have been physically impossible for him to do before.[47] He has not displayed the total lack of empathy associated with his brothers' genetic enhancements, as he was horrified when he thought he was responsible for hitting a woman as his powers were manifesting.

Black Leg Style

Further information: Black Leg Style

Under Zeff's strict tutelage, Sanji became a seasoned master of a martial art he created named the Black Leg Style, which relies solely on dynamic and well-coordinated kicks. The fighting style resembles a unique combination of Brazilian Capoeira, French Savate and Korean Taekwondo. Sanji has stated that he fights using his feet because he does not want to risk damaging his hands, as he needs them to cook; thus, instead of punches, Sanji incorporates handstands into the Black Leg Style. He can also use one-handed handstands and execute consecutive back handsprings (as seen during his fight with Jabra) to augment the force and range of his kicks. Using this martial art, Sanji can easily overpower numerous enemies simultaneously, including pirates, Marines, and World Government agents.

While running away from the okama on Momoiro Island during the timeskip, he discovered how to walk on air, allowing him to attack from above and evade incoming enemies.[48] Through his Sky Walk, Sanji can leap to great heights and travel at incredible speeds, as shown when he used it to travel from downtown Dressrosa to the edge of Green Bit to intercept Doflamingo in no time.[49] During the Wano Country Arc, Sanji could carry Nami, Carrot, Chopper, and Brook simultaneously using this technique.[50] Sanji has also learned how to momentarily run underwater. Not only is Sanji's Blue Walk not slowed down by the weight of water (as he was during the Arlong Park Arc), Usopp stated that Sanji's swimming speed is now on par with that of the fish-men, who are at their physical prime while surrounded by water.[51]

After the timeskip, Sanji can utilize fire in his strikes, similar to his Diable Jambe. This ability is partially due to Sanji's trauma from the last two years, so much so that simply reminding himself of it causes him to burst out in flames through sheer anger. He demonstrated this by easily defeating the gigantic fish-man Wadatsumi by using Hell Memories while in this mental state to engulf his massive foe in flames.[52]

Sanji/Abilities and Powers (11)

Due to his tremendous mastery of the Black Leg Style, Sanji can defeat powerful and dangerously skilled martial art masters, such as Kuroobi of Fish-Man Karate, Bon Kurei of Okama Kenpo, Wanze of Ramen Kenpo, and even Jabra, a deadly Rokushiki master who specialized in Tekkai Kenpo. During his time in the Kamabakka Kingdom, he took down all 99 Newkama Kenpo masters to steal the recipes of the Attack Cuisine.

Sanji/Abilities and Powers (12)

His training in a kick-based martial arts has granted him colossal leg strength, enabling him to break even the hardest materials and defeat the toughest enemies using the tremendous power of his kicks. Absalom, a pirate weighing over 600 pounds, noted that ordinary people would break their legs if they tried to kick him, but Sanji effortlessly knocked him around.[53] He can casually destroy metal weapons and buildings and effortlessly overpower giant sea monsters such as Bananawani and Momoo. Sanji even toppled Oars, a monstrous giant, by kicking him in the foot. In an SBS, Oda stated that Sanji's kicking power is "21 Bats" (the power to break 21 wooden bats in one kick).[54]

After his two years of rigorous training on Momoiro Island, which consisted mainly of constantly running away from the okama for days regardless of the harshest weather, his leg strength vastly increased. He broke the stronger-than-steel neck of a Pacifista with only one Diable Jambe-enhanced kick, critically damaging it, and showed no signs of pain afterwards (something he was unable to do before the timeskip). Sanji's newfound strength was also shown when he briefly overpowered and fought on par with Vergo, an elite officer of the Donquixote Pirates and a Marine vice admiral who defeated Smoker, even after being wounded by attacks from Caesar Clown and having one of his legs broken. One of the Seven Warlords of the Sea, Donquixote Doflamingo, recognized his physical power, opting to restrain Sanji's movements after the Straw Hat landed several blows.[55] With a crescent kick, he sent Charlotte Oven, a huge man and one of the strongest members of the Big Mom Pirates, flying and crashing into a nearby building.[56]

During the Whole Cake Island Arc, Sanji easily overpowered his brother Vinsmoke Yonji, a genetically enhanced commander of Germa 66, and emerged from the conflict without a scratch, which is notable as their father stated Yonji's strength was formidable.[57] Sanji was also able to match his father Vinsmoke Judge, the supreme commander of Germa 66, in a duel before he was overwhelmed by the latter's advanced technology and underhanded moves. His sister, Vinsmoke Reiju, was in awe at how strong he had become since she last saw him, describing him as a "beast".[58] When he kicked his older brother Niji in the face, the force of the kick did not only dislocate his jaw but also sent him crashing into a wall. Sanji's attacks are even strong enough to make his captain, Monkey D. Luffy, briefly pass out when struck by them, something only Rob Lucci had accomplished before, although he was not fighting back, and Sanji has improved significantly since their clash against CP9. Later, during the Tea Party escape, Sanji could counter an attack from Big Mom, one of the Four Emperors, with a Diable Jambe-enhanced kick alongside Luffy.

He could even lift a gigantic carriage carrying a giant-sized wedding cake along with the WC 31, Chiffon, and Pudding and launch it to the top of the Nostra Castello. He also blocked Daif*cku's genie's naginata strike when the genie was half the size of the Thousand Sunny. At Wano Country, Sanji smashed Page One into the ground with a kick after the Tobiroppo member had assumed his massive spinosaurus form. He blocked a kick from the enormous All-Star King while using his Raid Suit. He also kicked the All-Star Queen with such overwhelming force to rotate his brachiosaurus neck at high speed and easily shatter Perospero's hard candy arrows while also knocking away the latter on impact. In contrast, not even Chopper's strongest form, the Monster Point, could inflict any significant damage.

As for his named attacks, Sanji fights with a vast number of specific kicks and techniques. Most of his attacks are said in French and are usually cooking/food terms related in some way to the particular portion of the opponent's body that he is targeting or to the nature of the attack itself. In the 4Kids English anime, the attacks are changed to be funny-sounding, non-existent food items that have something to do with the target area of the attack.

Standard attacks are Mouton Shot (Sanji jumps and flips before kicking with all his might into the foe's mid-region or head) and Anti-Manner Kick Course (one of Sanji's most powerful kicks where he delivers a 180-degree vertical kick upward into a giant foe's torso or back).

Sanji's comedic finishing move, Parage Shoot, is a series of kicks directed at his opponent's face. This attack rearranges the victim's facial structure, often turning them handsome or bishounen-like, as seen with Wanze and Duval.

Diable Jambe

Further information: Black Leg Style/Diable Jambe
Sanji/Abilities and Powers (13)

During the Enies Lobby Arc, Sanji revealed a new ability: Diable Jambe, the power to heat his lower legs to a temperature so high that they glow bright red by spinning rapidly in place, which causes his attack to be more powerful. "Diable" means "Devil" in French and is also the name of a kitchen tool. It may also reference to the "sauce à la diable", a French spicy sauce. "Jambe" means "Leg". The kanji used, 悪魔風脚, means devil wind foot (風脚, wind foot, is a play on the term kazaashi, meaning wind speed). The aforementioned attacks also have the word Diable Jambe preceding them (ex. Diable Jambe: Flambage Shot).[59] The heat of his attacks is so high that contact for even a second could simultaneously scorch and severely wound his opponent. Sanji used this ability during his fight with Jabra, in which his regular attacks were not as effective due to the other's active usage of Tekkai. With the heat of his new ability, Sanji overcame his inability to smash through Tekkai by burning through it instead and setting his opponent ablaze.[60] By using the technique Frites Assorties against Oars, Sanji could effectively deflect his direct Gomu Gomu no Bazooka to protect Robin with three rapid kicks.[61]

His tolerance against fire is also astonishing. This would explain why he can utilize Diable Jambe without showing signs of getting burned while the opponent gets incinerated at the receiving end. However, Oda has said that it does not damage him because while the Diable Jambe burns hot, Sanji's heart burns hotter.[62] The first time Queen saw Sanji using Diable Jambe, he thought it was an ability acquired by Germa 66's genetic modifications. Sanji replied that he is a completely normal person, unlike any of his brethren. Queen said only lunarians can create fire at will like so, but Sanji said it was due to his "passion".[63]

As revealed during the crew's battle against PX-4, Diable Jambe appears to put extreme stress upon Sanji's legs. After several uses of the technique and during the confrontation against PX-1, Sanji himself comments that if he were to use the attack one more time, his legs would break.[64] After his two years of training and experience in "hell", Sanji's kicks became significantly more powerful, as seen in his fight with PX-7, where he critically damaged the Pacifista's neck with a single kick.[65]

Diable Jambe has improved to the point that his entire leg is now enveloped in large flames. It is now so powerful and hot that, even underwater, he can scorch a Kraken's tentacles with Bien Cuit: Grill Shot, severely injuring it.[66] At Gyoncorde Plaza, as he was airborne from using Sky Walk, he revealed another new move called Poêle à Frire: Spectre, where he stomps his opponents repeatedly with high accuracy and speed.[67]

Sanji's Diable Jambe could easily counter his father's flame resistant Raid Suit, and when Sanji was about to use Poêle à Frire against Judge, the Germa king was forced to resort to using a human shield to overpower his son.[68] Later, when forced to fight off his captain, Sanji's Concassé was strong enough to make Luffy pass out when Sanji struck him with it.[69] Later, Sanji used Crosse Strike along with Luffy's Elephant Gun to counter a lightning attack from Big Mom.[70]

Ifrit Jambe

Further information: Black Leg Style/Ifrit Jambe
Sanji/Abilities and Powers (14)

During the Wano Country Arc, Sanji developed Ifrit Jambe, a new, enhanced version of Diable Jambe. By combining his recently awakened genetic enhancements with Busoshoku Haki, Sanji drastically increases the strength and endurance of his legs, allowing them to endure much hotter flames. With this technique, Sanji is capable of producing bluish-white flames, adding a massive boost to his kicking techniques, more than the previous Diable Jambe, which allowed him to defeat the All-Star, Queen, an Ancient Zoan user with multiple cybernetic augmentations, including his and his brothers' Raid Suits' abilities.[47]

Haki

Main article: Haki

Kenbunshoku Haki

Sanji is an extremely skilled user of Kenbunshoku Haki, which is his specialty.[71] During his stay in the Kamabakka Kingdom, Sanji trained his Kenbunshoku Haki to become an advanced master of it due to being on a constantly careful watch for the harassment from the okama day and night who sought to steal his manhood. He can sense the presence, strength, emotions, and intent of others. Most remarkably, Sanji could even dodge a jelly bean shot by Charlotte Katakuri despite the Sweet Commander possessing a higher level of Kenbunshoku Haki.[72]

Sanji's mastery at using this form of Haki is evident in the following examples:

  • During the Fish-Man Island Arc, Sanji could sense Caribou in the Ryugu Palace alongside both Luffy and Zoro.[73]
  • He helped Kin'emon recover his torso from within the lake on Punk Hazard, actively using Kenbunshoku Haki to locate the samurai's torso within the dark water.[74]
  • He was able to perceive Tashigi being beaten by Vergo, despite the considerable distance between them.[75]
  • He detected a sniper on a rooftop 16 meters above the ground and intercepted him before he was able to shoot.[76]
  • He was even able to tell people's true intentions the first time they meet (as with Kin'emon or Viola, though it did not help with Pudding due to her superb acting skills).[77][78]
  • He sensed Nekomamushi's aura from within Capone Bege's castle body.[79]
  • He was able to dodge multiple bullets being fired at him by Pudding, all from point-blank range.[80]
  • He discerned Jewlery Bonney's presence inside a massive Warm Eddy.[81]

Busoshoku Haki

Sanji is a highly skilled user of Busoshoku Haki.[82] During his fight with his father, he blocked his spear by hardening his right leg.[83] Sanji also damaged Luffy despite his rubbery body when they fought on Whole Cake Island, indicating he hardened his leg to do so. Having awakened his dormant genetic enhancements during the raid on Onigashima, Sanji combined his sturdy exoskeleton and Busoshoku Haki to enhance his legs, allowing them to endure much hotter flames, resulting in the creation of Ifrit Jambe.[47]

Weapons

While Sanji's policy as a chef is to preserve his hands for the sole purpose of cooking, he has been known to fight with various items.

Swordsmanship

Sanji/Abilities and Powers (15)

According to his father, Sanji was trained to use swords.[83] However, due to Sanji's policy of only using his hands for cooking, the extent of any skills he may retain is unknown. He may still retain a high level of skill at wielding swords and/or other bladed weapons, as shown by his superb skills in wielding knives for combat, a skill Sanji retained and continuously honed through use in cooking.

Hocho Sabaki

Sanji/Abilities and Powers (16)

There has only been one time that Sanji has made an exception to his rule of never using knives and other kitchen tools or his hands to fight, though this was a very special case since his foe's armor was made of food (ramen to be exact) and they were fighting in a kitchen. Sanji took a pair of Wanze's kitchen knives during their battle aboard the Puffing Tom. He has demonstrated excellent precision and quick dexterity in wielding knives. According to Sanji, the way he performs this style is a first-class cook special, Hocho Sabaki (包丁捌き, Hōchō Sabaki?, literally meaning "Kitchen Knives Method").[84]

  • Epluchage (皮剥作業エプリュシャージ, Epuryushāji?, literally meaning "Peel Skin"): The only attack Sanji showed while fighting this style. He uses a pair of kitchen knives to peel away an opponent's armor. This is first seen being used against Wanze's ramen armor.[85] Epluchage is a French cooking verb which means "to peel away skin".

Raid Suit

Sanji/Abilities and Powers (17)

Germa 66 had created a Raid Suit specifically designed for Sanji to use, which was secretly hidden and given to him as a parting gift during the Vinsmokes' assistance in his and Luffy's escape from Cacao Island. Sanji initially refused to put it on due to his hatred for his family[86] but ultimately donned it while in Wano Country.

The suit gives Sanji a black Germa outfit, a cape with the number 3, and jet-propelled boots. Like the other Vinsmokes' Raid Suits, it grants Sanji the ability to fly and strengthen his kicks with propelled boots and serves as an armor to protect him from attacks. Uniquely, it also gives him a mask to wear over his nose and mouth and slicks the front of his hair into two parts, one pointing up and one pointing down.

Sanji/Abilities and Powers (18)

Its unique ability allows Sanji to blend in perfectly with his environment, leaving him invisible to the human eye. This invisibility gives him a great advantage in battle, enabling him to land surprise attacks on opponents without them seeing him coming.[87] He later uses this ability to sneak into a bathhouse and assist Nami, Robin, and Shinobu in escaping[88] and was also instrumental in rescuing Kozuki Momonosuke from the crucifix he was chained to during the Raid on Onigashima.[89]

The suit and its ability cause Sanji to resemble a character known as Stealth Black, who is a member of the fictionalized version of Germa 66 in the comic strip Sora, Warrior of the Sea. Knowing that, Sanji rejected the name and named this form as O-Soba Mask (おそばマスク, O-Soba Masuku?) instead.[87] After realizing it awakened his dormant genetic enchantments, Sanji destroyed his raid suit to cut off his ties to the Germa Kingdom.[46]

Other Weapons

Sanji/Abilities and Powers (19)
  • Usopp's Special Salt Ball (ウソップ特製”塩星”ソルトボール, Usoppu Tokusei Soruto Bōru?): Sanji was given salt balls by Usopp during the crew's adventure on Thriller Bark, for use in Zombie attacks. He used them to reveal Absalom's position after the zombie commander became invisible through the powers of the Suke Suke no Mi.[90]
  • Sanji was seen pointing a pistol at Miss All Sunday during her first meeting with the Straw Hats, but he did not fire it (likely due to his chivalry).[91] Later in Zou, he stole a rifle off one of the Fire Tank Pirates and used it to hold Caesar Clown hostage.[92]
  • During the Raid on Onigashima, Sanji used the bandaged Zoro as a blunt weapon against members of the Beasts Pirates.[93]

Tactical and Informational Wit

Besides his strength and speed, when it comes to strategy, Sanji has proven to be very resourceful. This was particularly evident in the Arabasta Saga, where he was responsible for both posing as Mr. 3 and fooling Crocodile into believing that he had killed the Straw Hats on Little Garden.[94] Later, he posed as "Mr. Prince" to lure Crocodile out of Rain Dinners, where the Straw Hats were being held captive, so that he could break in and release them.[95]

In the Skypiea Arc, when he and Usopp snuck onboard the Maxim to save Nami, Sanji took a detour and destroyed the ship's main engine. While the backup engines prevented the flying vessel from being crippled, Sanji's actions distracted Enel and bought Usopp time to get Nami off the ark.[96]

During the Water 7 Arc, Sanji went off on his own and waited patiently at the train station, having discovered that only one train was due to depart before Aqua Laguna struck; he also deduced that, if Robin were to leave the island, the train would be the only means of doing so. With his instincts confirmed, Sanji left Nami a Baby Den Den Mushi and a letter of his intentions, though most of the letter just spoke of his love for her, and even worse, the hiding place of the letter was very obviously marked with red paint, with large hearts for Nami and a threat for anyone else not to read it.[97]

During the Enies Lobby Arc, he took over Usopp's fight with Jabra, reminding the unconfident Usopp that he was not useless, and he could help protect Robin via sniping enemies from a distance, while Sanji himself was better suited for front-line fighting.[98] Later, he shut the Gates of Justice to allow the crew to escape the overwhelming Marine forces gathered for the Buster Call.[99]

In the Dressrosa Arc, he was the only one to figure out Law's true objective in establishing the Pirate Alliance, noting that Law was focusing too much on personally defeating Doflamingo instead of executing their plan to starve Kaidou of SMILEs.[100]

On Zou, when the Curly Hat Pirates were captured by Capone Bege and the Fire Tank Pirates, Sanji was able to release the others by sensing Nekomamushi was outside and throwing his friends out of Capone's body castle. He also ensured that the Fire Tank Pirates would not pursue the other Straw Hats by holding Caesar Clown hostage at gunpoint, after deducing that the new condition of capture on his second bounty ("Only Alive") guaranteed that the Fire Tank Pirates would not risk harming him to get Caesar off him, effectively outsmarting the extremely cunning master strategist Capone Bege.[101]

Sanji also had a fondness for reading books when he was younger and knows of many legends, albeit mainly in the form of urban legends as opposed to Robin's historical recollection of legends. He had already heard of the legendary ingredient, the Blue-Finned Elephant Tuna before he even saw it, and he was also familiar with the tale of Mont Blanc Noland through the book King of Liars, Noland, which he read as a child in North Blue. Furthermore, through reading an encyclopedia on Devil Fruits, he learned of the Suke Suke no Mi; however, since he was only interested in that particular fruit, what else he knows about Devil Fruits is currently unclear,[102] as he was shown not to be aware that Devil Fruit users would lose their ability to swim until Zeff told him.[103]

Lady Radar

Sanji takes chivalry to such an extent that he can sense when a woman is in danger, even when he is not within earshot, such as when Brogy approached Nami in Little Garden or when Tashigi was in tears after Vergo's betrayal at Punk Hazard, dubbing this as his Lady Radar (レディレーダー, Redirēdā?).[104] However, this can be a weakness, as he refuses to attack a woman even at the cost of injury. This led to him sustaining serious damage against Kalifa until Nami showed up and being at the mercy of Viola and her henchmen in Dressrosa. As an extension of this, however, he also seems to be able to detect sincerity (or lack thereof) in women. For instance, Sanji could tell that Viola truly felt despair under Doflamingo's control, despite her earlier boasting. When Nico Robin tried to leave the crew and discourage Sanji from chasing after her, he was able to tell that she was holding something back, later telling Chopper that "When a woman lies, a real man forgives her". Despite discovering the brutal deception and mockery that Charlotte Pudding put him through, he was able to see through her cruelty as a front to hide her past misery, and confronted her of it the next day, which caught her off guard.

Stealth Mastery

Sanji is immensely skilled at sneaking; his skills rivals that of Nami and Robin. After leaving the Germa Kingdom at a tender age, he could avoid detection for 13 years. As an adult, Sanji's skill was still prominent, as he was the only Straw Hat to avoid detection from Baroque Works until the final battle in Alubarna. In the anime-only G-8 Arc, Sanji showed no trouble sneaking around the base and was forced to help his far less stealthy captain to avoid detection. At Water 7, Sanji infiltrated the Puffing Tom right under the noses of CP9, who were masters of espionage and stealth. Even Rob Lucci exclaimed his amazement at this feat. Sanji also moved around the heavily guarded Whole Cake Chateau with no difficulty, avoiding detection from Pudding, and successfully broke into the infirmary to speak with his sister, Reiju, by tying up the guard.

After acquiring his Raid Suit and the ability that came with it, Sanji was able to make great use of this new invisibility for direct combat, being able to land heavy strikes on Page One without being detected.[87] On Onigashima, Sanji used his Raid Suit to sneak onto the Live Stage without being detected and freed Momonosuke after Shinobu's attempt failed.

Facial Reconstruction

Sanji is capable of reconstructing someone's face simply by kicking them. This ability of his debuted when Sanji was facing off against Wanze. During his fight with Wanze, he did not seem to have any control over this power and only discovered it by accident. The kicks he inflicted to Wanze's face unintentionally reshaped it little by little until he looked entirely different, and it was reversed when the kick Sanji used to defeat him hit so hard it knocked his face back to normal. However, when Sanji reconstructed Duval's face, he clearly states that he did it on purpose, meaning that he has mastered the ability.[105]
