SCHACHSIEK, EBERHARD, 89, died January 18, 2001 in Ft. Myers, Florida. A native of Germany and a graduate of the University of Berlin, and the Berlin Academy of Music. Emigrated to Bessemer, Alabama in 1955 and became a naturalized citizen of the United States in 1960. He taught music in the Bessemer schools and privately 1965 when he joined the faculty of Samford University in Birmingham, Alabama, as teacher of German until his retirement in 1977.

He moved to Cape Coral, Florida in 1979 and later to Fort Myers, Florida. His musical activities during his active retirement years included cellist for five years, in the now South West Florida Symphony orchestra. Conductor of the Calusa Chamber Players, organizer and performer in several trios and quartets and dance bands. A musical advisor and performer in the cultural group of the GermanAmerican Social Club and performer where helpful as a member of Calusa Musicale, and the Cape Coral Lions Club. He is survived by his wife Frances; son, Jochen Schachtsiek and daughter-in-law Ingrid of Darmstadt, Germany; daughter, Jutta deChassey of Nancy, France; grandsons, Dirk Schachtsiek of Neu-Isenberg, Germany, Jan Schachtsiek of Montevideo, Uraguay, Stephane deChassey of Nancy, France, and Christophe deChassey of Paris, France; their wives; a great grandson, a great granddaughter, and three stepgreat grandchildren.

MARY JANE EVANS, age 102, made her transition on Friday, January 12, 2001, after a beautiful century of life. She was a lifelong resident of Shelby County, faithful member of the Mountain Missionary Baptist Church Calera, where she served on the Usher Board, sang in the choir, and as treasurer. Mr. White, a lifelong resident of Birmingham was born on May 28, 1919, the son of Mary Lee Drennen and William Bew White. He received his BA degree at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York in 1940 and his LLB degree from the University of Virginia in 1942 where he was a member of the Virginia Law Review. In 1943, he married Susan Gabriella Comer. During World War II, White served with the 3rd Armored Division as a 2nd Lieutenant in the European Theatre.

He was discharged in 1946 with the rank of Major. He was a member of the Third Armored Division Association and Veterans of the Battle of the Bulge Association. At the end of the war he returned to Birmingham and was an attorney with the firm of Bradley, Arant, Rose and White of which he was counsel until his death. After his retirement, White operated a cattle farm in Greene County, Alabama where he enjoyed hunting and fishing. White was active in many business and professional organizations throughout his career.

He was a member of the Birmingham, Alabama and American Bar Associations. He was a member of the Council of Section of Business Law of the American Bar Association, Committee of corporate law of that section and the International Bar Association. He was a former director of Avondale Mills, Southern Airways, Inc, Republic Airlines, Northwest Airlines, Inc. and Vulcan Life Insurance Company. He was a Trustee of the Comer Foundation, Susan Mott Webb Charitable Trust and the Barbara I.

Shook Foundation. In addition, White was a member of the Executive Board of the Birmingham Council of Boy Scouts of America and received the Silver Beaver Award from the Boy Scouts and served on the Advisory Board of the Birmingham Council of the Boy Scouts until his death. He was Chairman and long time board member of the Birmingham Chapter of the American Red Cross. He was a member and former President of The Children's Hospital of Alabama and a member and former President of the Children's Hospital of Alabama Foundation. White was former President of the Country Club of Birmingham and a member of Mountain Brook Club and the Redstone Club.

White was a member of Canterbury United Methodist Church where he taught the JOY (Jesus, Others and You) Sunday School Class for 25 years, and the Methodist Church in Forkland, Alabama. White is survived by his wife of 57 years, Gay Comer White; a sister, Mary Alice Sample; a son, William Bew White, III and Wendy; daughters, Gillian White Goodrich and Mike, Mary Lee White, all of Birmingham and Bevelle White John of Houston, Texas. He is also survived by 12 grandchildren: Thomas Michael Goodrich, and Elizabeth of Atlanta, Braxton Comer Goodrich, Charles Drennen Goodrich, Gillian Grace Goodrich, Bevelle Warren Worthen, and Jamie, Jennis Faulkner Warren, William Bew White, IV, Walker White Dorman, and Evan, and Wynne Comer White, all of Birmingham; Gillian Elizabeth Puffer, Ellen Moorman Puffer, and Susan Gabriella Puffer of Houston, Texas.
