Drew Thornton Jr.

Jesup—Harold Andrew “Drew” Thornton Jr., 62, a lifelong resident of Jesup died on June 8, 2024, at Memorial Hospital in Savannah after a short illness, surrounded by family.

He graduated from Wayne County High School in 1980. After graduating from Abraham Baldwin Agricultural College, he continued his education at Georgia Southern University. He was proud to be a small business owner of The Cleaners for many years and served as an accountant at EAM for the past eight years.

He will always be remembered as selfless, patient, generous and giving to others, his family said, and he never asked for anything in return. His love for his community was shown daily. He enjoyed spending time with his Wednesday-night friend group and was loved by many.

He was an avid sportsman who loved hunting, fishing (inshore, offshore and the river) and cheering on the University of Georgia Bulldogs. He was also a member of the Jesup Elks Lodge.

He was a devoted husband, father and “Dpa,” and his kindness and love for his wife were felt by everyone around him.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Preacher and Shirlie Thornton; his sister and brother-in-law, Sherry and Dwayne Wasdin.

Survivors include his loving wife of 41 years, Tina; his son, Bailey (Brandi) of Odum; a grandson, Beckett; sisters, Dixie (Frank) Poppell of Denver, Colorado and Shellie Gay (Mitchell) Bohannon of Mount Pleasant, South Carolina; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held June 11 at Rinehart Chapel with Herschell Hires officiating. Interment followed at the Odum City Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Frank Poppell, Joseph Puccio, Timmy Rozier, Pat Ogden, Rodney Madray, Carey Martin, Shorty Stephens and Mitchell Boyette. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Big “O” Hunting Club, Jesup Elks Lodge and Wednesday Night Pond House Crew and ABAC SFW Guys.

In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to the Jesup Elks Lodge Scholarship Fund, P.O. Box 154, Jesup, GA 31598.

Stanley N. Carden Sr.

Jesup—Stanley N. Carden Sr., 89, of Jesup died June 4, 2024, under the care of Hospice of South Georgia.

He was born on Jan. 29, 1935, in Wauwautosa, Wisconsin, and lived most of his adult life in Wayne County.

He was a devoted husband, father and grandfather. He met his beloved wife, Shirley Carden, in Callahan, Florida, during high school, and they shared 58 wonderful years together, until her passing 12 years ago.

He dedicated 38 years of his life to ITT Rayonier, where he excelled and retired as the technical sales manager. He was an active member of Epworth Methodist Church, where he found solace and community in his faith.

An avid golfer and member of Pine Forest County Club, he enjoyed spending his free time on the golf course or at home, honing his woodworking skills in his shop.

His wife of 58 years, Shirley Lee Carden, preceded him in death.

Survivors include his daughter, Barbara Carden Hill of Jesup; two sons, Stanley (Bonnie) Carden Jr. of Orange City, Florida, and Mark (Linda) Carden of Newport, Oregon; a sister, Delores Welch, of Oregon; and several grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held June 8 at Rinehart Chapel with the Rev. Steve Larson officiating. Interment followed in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Joshua, Cody, Wyatt and Mark Carden, Josh and Will Blount.

Sherman “Tom” Tilley

Jesup—Sherman “Tom” Tilley, 76, of Jesup died June 6, 2024.

The former Ferndale, Washington, resident had lived in Wayne County the past 22 years and was a member of Altamaha Baptist Church.

He served several years in the U.S. Army as staff sergeant, where he led an LRRP team in Vietnam. He later worked as an appliance repair man for many years and enjoyed outdoor activities, including hunting and fishing.

Survivors include his wife of 52 years, Susan Tilley of Jesup; a son, Nathan Tilley of Jesup; and a brother, Sammy Tilley of Guyton.

Memorial services were held June 8 at Altamaha Baptist Church with the Rev. Deven Mixon and the Rev. Chris Turner officiating.

J.J. Rowell Jr.

Jesup—Jeremiah “J.J.” James Rowell Jr., 17, of Jesup died June 5, 2024.

The Wayne County native attended Crossroads Church of God and was a Wayne County High School student. He could “work a room” with his bright personality and enjoyed being the boss. He was a jokester who liked to play Xbox and watch YouTube videos.

He was preceded in death by his father, Jeremiah “Jeremy” James Rowell Sr.; his grandfather, Bill Moseley; his grandmother, Brenda Sweat Rowell; and cousins, A.J. Reddish and Peyton Sweat.

Survivors include his mother, Georgia Moseley Rowell; siblings, Lauren Whitley and Lucas Mason “Luke” Rowell, all of Jesup; grandparents, Clora Moseley and Jerry Edwin Rowell; aunts and uncles, Lawrence and Vanessa Moseley of Jesup, Sheriff Chuck and Jennifer Moseley of Screven, Cindy and Alex Reddish of Jesup, Billie Jo and Buddy Starling of Jesup, Kimberly and Ronnie Poppell of Jesup and Richard William “Richie” Rowell of Alma; and several cousins.

Funeral services were held June 10 at Rinehart Chapel with his cousin the Rev. Walker Reddish and coach Jamie Knight officiating. Family interment followed in Beulah Baptist Church Cemetery. Active pallbearers were his cousins.

Lorata Griner Barber

Odum—Lorata “MawMaw” Griner Barber, 90, of Odum died May 29, 2024.

The Bainbridge native had lived in Wayne County for the past 20 years and was a member of Bethany Baptist Church and was a homemaker. Her favorite past times were gardening, cooking, shopping and being with her family.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Harry Joe Barber, and her son, Charles Barber.

Survivors include two daughters, Frances Reynolds and Traci (Eric) Manning, all of Odum; two sons, Jim Barber of Macon and Billy (Karen) Barber of Atlanta; nine grandchildren, Mandy, Amber, Bucky, Cole, Elizabeth, Jana, Olivia, Carlie and Hayes; and four great-grandchildren, Aaron, Hayden, Madelyn and Sydney.

Memorial services were held June 1 from Rinehart and Sons Chapel with the Rev. Stanley Todd officiating.

Thelma Manning

Barrow

Jesup—Thelma Manning Barrow, 66, of Jesup died June 6, 2024.

The Wayne County native was a member of Antioch Missionary Baptist Church and a homemaker.

Her family was her whole world, especially her grandsons. She “loved on” people and always gave an encouraging word, even to strangers.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Henry Clifton Barrow Jr.; her parents, Dave Manning and Elsie Manning Dyal; and a brother, Louie Manning.

Survivors include her daughter, Rachel Barrow Wilder of Jesup; grandsons, Asa (Luella Melton) and Zephan Wilder, all of Jesup; three sisters, Pat Branham, Helen Lane and Carolyn (DeAubrey) Crummey, all of Jesup; two brothers, Johnny (Jackie) Manning and David (Phyllis) Manning, all of Jesup; and several nieces and nephews.

Funeral services were held June 9 at Rinehart Chapel with the Rev. Charles Drury and the Rev. John Arnheiter officiating. Interment followed in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery. Active pallbearers were Keith Manning, Brian Manning, David Manning Jr., James Manning, JaMark Smith and Clayton McKinnon.

Shirley Ann Sapp Christian

Jesup—Shirley Ann Sapp Christian, 78, of Jesup died May 27, 2024.

The Wayne County native was a member of Calvary Baptist Church and a retired paraprofessional with the Wayne County Board of Education. She enjoyed traveling and spending time with her family.

She was predeceased by her siblings, Glyn Sapp and Mary Lesher.

Survivors include a daughter, Debbie Christian Link of Franklin, Tennessee; a son, David (Shannon) Christian of Folkston; sisters, Linda Carter of Jesup and Barbara Jean (Chewy) Hernandez of El Paso, Texas; nine grandchildren, Noel and Loran Link, Ryan (Heather), Samantha, Nicholas, Allison, Hailee, Meagan and Zane; two great-grandchildren, Aiden and Mason; and several nieces, nephews and cousins.

Funeral services were held May 31 from Rinehart and Sons Chapel with Pastor Vann Dempsey officiating. Interment was in George Cemetery. Active pallbearers were her family.

David Woods

Screven—David Woods, 63, of Screven died on May 28, 2024.

The Pierce County native was an avid motorcyclist who loved his Harley and completed many trips with his wife and made many memories along the way. Another hobby was fishing, and he didn’t even care whether he caught anything but was thankful to enjoy nature in the Altamaha River.

He was a member of Screven First Baptist Church and worked for more than 30 years for Wayne Memorial Hospital as a respiratory therapist.

He was predeceased by his mother, Dixie Youmans; his sister, Katie Hernandez; and grandparents, Kathleen and T. C. Roberson.

Survivors include his wife of 35 years, Phyllis C. Woods of Screven; three sons, Stephen, Chris and James; his mother-in-love, Edna Counts of Jesup; a brother, Corbette (Hope) Woods of Blackshear; several grandchildren; a niece; and three nephews.

Funeral services were held May 31 at Rinehart Chapel with the Rev. Paul Eastwood officiating. Private burial followed in Waters Cemetery in Blackshear.

Tracy E. Pittman III

Screven—Tracy E. “Hoss” Pittman III, 52, of Screven died June 9, 2024.

The lifelong resident of Screven graduated in 1990 from Wayne County High School and enjoyed gardening and watching drag racing.

He was predeceased by his father, Tracy Edward Pittman Jr.; his stepfather, John Wise; and his grandparents, Pat and Gladys Denison and Tracy Sr. and Bea Pittman.

Survivors include his mother, Marilyn Denison Wise of Screven; his sister, Tonya (Thomas) Drury of Jesup; a nephew, James Drury; a stepsister, Rachel Invester of Fort Knox, Kentucky; and a special friend, Darrell Bargeron.

Memorial services were held June 12 from Rinehart and Sons Chapel with Thomas Drury and Pastor Donald Pittman officiating.

William “Price”

Chapman Jr.

Ludowici—William “Price” Chapman Jr., 82, of Ludowici died June 10, 2024.

The Long County native was a member of Jones Creek Baptist Church, where he served as a music leader, deacon and Sunday school teacher. He was instrumental in music programs in many area churches.

After graduating Ludowici High School in 1959, he attended Truett McConnell College and later earned a sociology degree from Georgia Southern College.

He served his community as a former president of Long County Jaycees and a former volunteer with Ludowici Fire Department, and he helped to start the Long County Lions Club. He was also a member of the “Sons of Jubal” men’s choir. Christian gospel music was his first love, and thereby he had many invitations to lead and participate in many community services.

He was predeceased by his parents, Price and Frankie Wilson Chapman; and his sister, Linda Chapman.

Survivors include his wife of 50 years, Connie Stafford Chapman of Ludowici; a daughter, Laura (Eric) Purser of Ringgold; a son, Billy (Bethanne) Chapman of Hickory, North Carolina; sisters, Jackie Morgan of Savannah and Sue Lutes of Ormond Beach, Florida; four grandsons, Ethan and Evan Purser and Henry and Ollie Chapman; and many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held today (Thursday) at 11 a.m. from Jones Creek Baptist Church with the Rev. Steve Davis and Pastor Allan Pierce officiating. Interment will follow in Jones Creek Cemetery. Active pallbearers will be family and friends.

The family will greet friends one hour prior to services on Thursday from Jones Creek Baptist Church.

Anita Gordon

Jesup—Anita Parker Gordon, 86, died peacefully on June 7, 2024, at home surrounded by her loving family under the care of Hospice of South Georgia Inc.

A resident of Jesup for the past 67 years, she was born on Oct. 11, 1937, in Ludowici to the late Daniel and Katie Baxter Parker. She graduated from Ludowici High School, class of 1955. On Dec. 9, 1956, she married her late husband, James Ray Gordon, and the two soon relocated to Jesup. She worked for American National Bank, now known as Bank of America, for many years and she retired as vice president of operations. She served her community in numerous benevolent organizations, including the Jesup Jaycettes and the PTA, having served as president of both organizations. She also volunteered as a Pink Lady with the Wayne Memorial Hospital Auxiliary and was an active member of First Baptist Church, Jesup, for more than 67 years. She attended the Laverne Bennett Sunday School class and had worked in the nursery for more than 50 years.

In her spare time, she enjoyed flower gardening and working puzzles of all kinds. She was also known by her friends and family to be a very competitive card player.

In addition to her parents and her husband, she was preceded in death by her son, James “Jay” Ray Gordon Jr.; one sister, Marinelle Chestnut; and two brothers, Elmer and Wilmer Parker.

Survivors include her two daughters, Karen Gordon of Jesup and Pam Gordon (George) Hires of Jesup; grandchildren, Joseph and Amber Gordon and Gracen, Addison and Jameson Gordon (and their mother, Wendy Gordon Creager); sisters-in-law, Lillian Simmons of Ludowici and Robbie Gordon of Lumber City; special caregivers, Sandra and Francisco Gomez; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended-family members.

Funeral services were held June 9 at First Baptist Church with Pastor Brooks Haddock and David Simmons officiating.

Interment followed in Pinecrest Memorial Cemetery.

Active pallbearers were David Simmons, Bobby Chestnut, Frank Parker, Dale Simmons, Rob Gordon and Jeffrey Parker. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Laverne Bennett Sunday School Class.

Paul Bedat

Jesup—Paul Bedat Jr., 80, died peacefully on June 4, 2024, at home under the care of Hospice of South Georgia.

A resident of Jesup for the past six months and former resident of Brandon, Florida, for nearly 30 years, he was born on May 26, 1944, in Bridgeport, Connecticut, to the late Paul Bedat Sr. and Jean Bedat.

He was blessed with the ability to build things, and that was his passion as he worked as a self-employed carpenter for most of his life. In his spare time, he enjoyed watching football and was a Tampa Bay Buccaneers fan.

In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his half-sister, Jean Banckowski; and his brother, Robert Bedat.

Survivors include his wife, Suzanne Erbter Bedat of Pinellas Park, Florida; a daughter, Kathryn (Curtis) Lanier of Jesup; four grandchildren, Alexis Bedat, Mollysue Lanier, Haley Lanier and Lena Lanier; and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended-family members.

A memorial service was held June 10 at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in Jesup with the Rev. Dale Bange officiating.

Mae Starling

Jesup—Mae Starling, 82, died peacefully on June 8, 2024, at home surrounded by her loving family under the care of Hospice of South Georgia.

A resident of Jesup for most of her life and former resident of Camden County, she was born on Oct. 8, 1941, in Jesup to the late James Robert Wilson and Josephine Diane Westberry Wilson.

She worked in several different jobs throughout her life but mainly stayed home and cared for her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. In her spare time, she enjoyed crocheting, playing cards, going to yard sales and occasionally playing slot machines.

In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband, Johnny Starling; children, Myrtice (Moses) Brown and Joey Howard; a brother, Robert Wilson Sr.; sisters, Hazel Mosley, Vicky Westberry and Mildred Correy; and a great-grandson, Kaden Jones.

Survivors include her daughters, Sarah Howard and Deanna Miller both of Jesup; sons, Tommy (Teresa) Howard of Augusta, Elbert Davis and fiancée, Elizabeth Hickox of Woodbine; a brother, Roy Wilson of Ludowici; a sister, Linda (Shorty) Dixon of Jesup; grandchildren, Amanda McGuire, Alissa Howard, Shannon Martin, Travis Martin, Dezz Mathis, Katie Mauney, Josephine Howard, Donnitta (Donald) Peterson, Michelle Williams, Katrina Williams, Susan Smith, Kendra Howard, Shirley Jones, Jabrarie Jones, Tangie Brown, Aleesha Howard, Adriane (Thomas) Llcken and David Bass, all of Jesup; and a host of great-grandchildren, nieces, nephews, cousins and other extended-family members.

Visitation will be held Friday, June 14, from 5 p.m. to 7 p.m. at Howard & Jones Funeral Home in Jesup.

Funeral services will be held Saturday, June 15, at 2 p.m. at Howard & Jones Funeral Home with the Rev. James Carter officiating.

Interment will follow in Sunset Oaks Memorials.

Grandsons and great-grandsons will serve as active pallbearers.

Ann O’Quinn

Jesup—Ann Teston O’Quinn, 82, died June 4, 2024, under the care of Hospice of South Georgia and her family.

She was the pioneer woman of her family and had the cast-iron pans to prove it. She could cook anything, and if you needed a recipe, you could always call “Granny” for it. She was of the Baptist faith.

She enjoyed growing various flowers, watching the birds outside, watching Western movies, and playing cards. She managed several businesses throughout her lifetime. She was known as a people person, who would make time for everyone who crossed her path and who could talk to them about anything. She was very knowledgeable about antiques and also liked to paint. She always enjoyed spending time with her family and loved them all dearly.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Johnny and Laura Teston; sisters, Elizabeth Cozzilino, Helen Love, Bobby Sloan and Dorothy Leggett; and brothers Archie Teston, John Teston and Madison Teston.

Survivors include her daughters and sons-in-law, Jessie (Gary) Duncan and Thronda (Jamie) Taylor all of Jesup, and Shelly (Brad) Cooper of Huntsville, Alabama; grandsons, Christopher (Miranda) Teston, Gary (Jennifer) Duncan Jr., Ben (Samantha) Blanton and Kyle Cooper; many great-grandchildren; one great-great-grandchild; a sister, Eloise Adco*ck; a brother, Alfred Teston; and numerous nieces and nephews.

Graveside services were held June 8 at George Cemetery in Jesup. Pastor Mindy Ingram and Pastor Dennie Waters officiated. Pallbearers were her family. Honorary pallbearers were members of the Hospice of South Georgia staff.
