Vacations and travelers are all packing their bags and heading down to the sunshine state to take advantage of its coastline, sunny skies, and high temperatures in June. Kids of all ages are heading to theme parks all over the state, and the girls are going down to South Beach, Miami.

Our Activity Tips for June

Weather

June is officially summertime and the weather sure shows. The month is going to be a lot hotter and a lot muggier. Take precautions and make sure you stay hydrated at all times.

The average high temperature in June ranges from 86°F to 91°F (30-33°C) in Florida. June is the rainy season, bringing frequent rains and hot and humid weather. Rainfall is rapidly increasing throughout the month with an average of 4.5 – 6 inches.

Average highs in June include:

• Miami: 86°F (30°C)
• Tampa: 90°F (32°C)
• Orlando: 91°F (33°C)
• Jacksonville: 90°F (32°C)
• Destin: 88°F (31°C)

Florida always brings unpredictable weather, especially during the rainy season. The further south you go, the higher the sun and the warmer the temperatures will become, but you are also more likely to have cloudy days with showers as well.

Rainfall

June is the second month of the wet season. Rain will be very likely almost every day, so you should be prepared with either an umbrella or poncho on hand. The rainfall will gradually increase as the month goes on.

💡 After spending many summers in Florida, we learned to appreciate the showers when they come. The heat and humidity can become unbearable in the afternoons, especially after being outside all morning. Storms and showers can put a damper on your daily activities, but it may not be as bad as you might think.

The average rainfall during this time of year is 4.5-6 inches and very rarely exceeds 8.3 inches. It usually rains 22 days of the month, while the end of the month tends to bring more heavy rains and longer showers.

Heat/Humidity

Florida is only 90 miles away from the Caribbean islands, and that causes the humidity levels to be high all year. But summertime brings a different type of humidity some people may not be prepared for.

The average humidity in June in Florida is anywhere between 60-92%, depending on the time of day, with most of the day being on average 77%. Mornings tend to have high humidity levels, but cooler temperatures. It becomes hotter throughout the day, however, depending on the rainfall, high humidity levels can linger around till evening.

June humidity levels in Florida aren’t as bad as what’s to come, but you can get a pretty good dose of it.

Experience: We traveled to Disney World multiple times, and time in June, we experienced humidity levels like never before. We were constantly changing shirts because they would become soaked with sweat one right after the other, and spent hundreds of dollars on beverages to stay hydrated throughout the day. But that was only once. June isn’t often that bad.

Daily Weather Progression

The weather in June tends to get noticeably hotter as the day goes on, reaching high temperatures even long after the sun goes down. Rain can happen at any time, but more often than not it comes for a few hours in the afternoons.

After a long humid morning at Disney World, a cool shower in the afternoons can be a huge blessing, but it can also bring more muggy evenings along with it.

Here is a daily progression of a southern location, Miami:

• 8 AM: 78°F
• 11 AM: 83°F
• 2 PM: 85°F
• 9 PM: 80°F

Keep in mind, Miami is at the very bottom of Florida, here you will find the hottest temperatures most times of the day.

Water Temperature

June has ideal waters for summertime, making this one of the reasons Florida beaches are so high in popularity. The ocean temperature is perfect for water dogs and swimmers alike and is often compared to bathing water.

Slight differences/water temperatures by region:

• Coolest: The coolest temperatures of 80 degrees Fahrenheit can be found on the northern Atlantic in places such as Amelia Island and Jacksonville.
• Medium: Most beaches on the Gulf side, such as areas like Tampa and Fort Myers, will have water temperatures around 82 degrees Fahrenheit on average.
• Warmest: The warmest waters in all of Florida can always be found around the Southern tip by Miami and the Keys, averaging around 84 degrees Fahrenheit.

What to Wear | Packing & Outfit Tips

Pack your beach bags, and don’t forget the sunscreen.

Summer is in full swing down in Florida in June. It’s the best time of year to wear shorts or flowy dresses, Hawaiian shirts, tank tops, and flip flops. Lightweight and loose-fit types of clothing are perfect for the month of June. Try to avoid tight-fitted clothing, as they tend to be like a magnet because of the high humidity levels.

During the month of June, the clothing items in your suitcase should consist of:

• Shorts (Fast drying)
• Capris
• T-shirts & Tanks (bring extras)
• Sundresses/skirts
• Light jacket or windbreaker
• Bathing Suits Cover-up, Swim Trunks
• Raincoat or Poncho (rainy season)

Avoid items such as jeans (ladies: no leggings), and instead, opt for shorts (or sundresses for the ladies).

Ladies: Khaki shorts and loose crew neck style tops are a great example of an outfit we love for day trip activities in June. For the rest of your time spent oceanside, a bathing suit will suffice.

Comfortable Shoes/Sneakers

Comfortable shoes are a must, no matter where you go. Don’t underestimate the amount of walking you will be doing. In particular, when going to Orlando and visiting the theme parks. We wear sneakers most of the time!

Without comfortable walking shoes, you might end up with blisters and hurting feet at the end of the day. Please don’t wear flip-flops.

Prepare for Rain

Always be prepared for rain, especially the more south you are. Intermittent drizzle is very common on most days, especially in June, and sometimes it can turn into an hours-long downpour.

Keep a small umbrella or poncho handy, and don’t forget about a spare change of shoes! Some of the drainage systems are ineffective, meaning you will find large puddles wherever you go if you walk in the rain.

Other suggestions would be sunglasses, a small backpack for day trips, sandals with support, a beach bag, hat, water shoes (if doing water sports or boating), a water bottle for hydration, sunscreen, a small portable fan, cooler, and of course your Mickey Mouse ears for Disney.

💡 When visiting Florida, we always keep a sweater or light jacket handy throughout the day for dining out in indoor restaurants. Since the temperature outside is mainly hot, the air conditioners are on full blast. If you are someone who tends to get cold easily, this is a great tip to keep in mind.

Tip: One thing we have learned from traveling in Florida is to always bring some medicine for a headache. The Florida heat is no joke and if you aren’t used to a warm climate, this could really bring a damper to your visit.

Rates

June brings hundreds of visitors to the sunshine state every year, and along with that comes high rates. This is the beginning of summer and the most popular time of year for family vacations in Florida.

Kids are finally out of school, and the weather is still bearable and not ridiculously hot like what is to come. Hotels tend to raise their prices this time of year to fit the demand. Prices tend to start out at least $150 per night and go up from there for a room fit for a family.

Airbnbs and guesthouses average around $160 per night and up during the summer, keep in mind beach and waterfront locations will always be more expensive.

If you are on a really tight budget and traveling child-free, don’t forget Florida is host to dozens of hostels! Most of them are located in cities such as Miami and Orlando, but starting prices are usually around $40 per night!

Crowds

Most visitors are trying to beat the heat by going in June, instead of July or August, but also taking advantage of their time in Florida and flock to the coastlines.

Bigger cities in Florida such as Orlando, Miami or Jacksonville will always be taken over by crowds in June. While the state is surrounded by beaches which often makes it very easy for visitors and locals to spread themselves out, that is not so easy to do in the busy month of June.

Good to know: Smaller beach towns like Siesta Key and Naples, or more upscale locations like West Palm Beach, are going to host a smaller number of visitors due to more expensive prices and being less attractive for families.

Places to Visit / Things to Do in June

Most visitors think about the major attractions in Orlando (Disney, Universal, Sea World) and the beaches across the state. However, beaches and theme parks aren’t the only way to enjoy Florida in June. There are countless options to immerse yourself in nature and the outdoors in the sunshine state during this month.

Whether you enjoy camping, hiking, swimming, or just admiring the scenery, Florida has something for everyone. Visitors can cool off and go tubing down the Ichetucknee river, or go swimming and SUP boarding down in Bahia Honda State Park. Camping and hiking is also an option in Big Cypress National Reserve, which happens to be right around the corner from Everglades National Park.

Florida Beaches

The coastline of Florida is a vacation hotspot all year round because of the gorgeous beaches.

June is typically the start of summer break and is the busiest time for family vacations, so most beaches tend to be rather busy. But don’t let that stop you from visiting, June is hot and the Florida beaches are hard to beat!

The panhandle region of Florida has milder temperatures in June as well as some of the warmest and calmest water on the Gulf Coast at 81 degrees Fahrenheit. The northern location causes beaches in the region to not be as crowded, and there is a family-friendly and relaxing atmosphere! Some of our favorites are Destin, Orange Beach, and Pensacola!

Dry Tortuga National Park is also located at the bottom of the keys, the most southern national park in the country and one of the best spots for snorkeling!

Naples and Fort Myers are favorites among the older generation, but winter is long over in June and the snowbirds are gone for the season! Now is the time to take advantage of the lower rates and crowds and enjoy the warm water temperatures of 83 degrees Fahrenheit.

Miami Beach/South Beach will be the busiest due to its popularity and warm temperatures. The waters here will be on average 84 degrees Fahrenheit.

Jacksonville and St. Augustine tend to draw fewer crowds compared to their southern competitors, this is mainly because of their northern location and cooler waters of 80 degrees Fahrenheit. The slightly cooler water temps make this a great place to swim and escape the humidity.

West Palm Beach has warmer waters in June that average around 82°F. Located in the southern region of the state, but tends to be less crowded than neighboring beaches of Fort Lauderdale and Miami.

Tip: Visit Inland Florida

June is a hot month filled with unpredictable weather. Visiting attractions and regions in the central part of Florida can be just as fun as a beach vacation! Explore the abundance of state parks, as well as Everglades National Park, tube down the Ichetucknee River, expand your knowledge at the Kennedy Space Center, or ride all the roller coasters at Bush Gardens. Central Florida has a variety of activities for everyone!

Orlando

The average high temperatures in Orlando are around 91°F (33°C) in June. Rainfall is likely to happen most days, usually in the afternoons.

Disney World and Universal Studios in Orlando are the most popular attractions in Florida. Spend your days at Harry Potter World, country-hopping around Epcot, or spinning in the teacups at the Magic Kingdom! Disney also has two waterparks in Orlando as well, Typhoon Lagoon and Blizzard Beach.

Blizzard Beach is our favorite due to its style and abundance of water slides!

Crowds: June is the first official month of summer and a very busy time for family vacations. Because it’s not as humid in June compared to July and August, more family vacations usually happen now. Expect high crowds in Orlando, especially at theme parks. In general, June is equally busy as July and August, sometimes even more crowded.

Universal Studios | Orlando

Universal Studios is one of the most famous attractions in Florida. June is one of the busiest months for the park due to the high number of family vacations and kids being out of school.

• Tip: Hotels in Universal Studio Resort (stay there to save time)

Is the park-to-park ticket worth it? The park-to-park ticket allows you to roam between the three parks (see below) on the same day. You definitely should get it if you are a Harry Potter fan, as you can only ride the Hogwarts Express with this ticket.

Additionally, some visitors always get the park-to-park ticket as they love to move around, particularly if it’s too busy in one park. It just gives you more flexibility.

Skip-the-line-ticket: The crowds in June are usually high. This is a great time to take advantage of Universal Studios express/skip-the-line tickets.

Three parks: Universal Studios is not just one park. There are a total of three Universal parks, each with its own theme and unique attractions:

• Islands of Adventure
• Volcano Bay Water Park

Walt Disney World | Orlando (Nearby)

Disney World is Florida’s most prominent attraction and usually a ‘must see’ for kids and families. Visiting Disney becomes very popular this month, so be prepared for long lines and high numbers of people. Starting in June, ‘After Hour Nights’ are offered during most summers, and have separate nighttime events and activities.

Additionally, the later in the month you travel, the higher the temps and humidity and the greater chance of daily rain showers in the parks.

While Disney World features multiple attractions, including water parks and golf courses, its main attractions are the four theme parks:

1. Magic Kingdom
2. Animal Kingdom
3. Hollywood Studios
4. Epcot

Tickets: For a hassle-free experience, get the base tickets in advance: Walt Disney World Orlando – Admission Base Tickets 2-7 days (mobile voucher or printed voucher)

How many days? 5-7 days are recommended for the best Disney World experience. If you only have two or three days, visit Magic Kingdom and Animal Kingdom or Epcot. Magic Kingdom is the best park as its rides and attractions have more magic than anything else.

In general, plan 1-2 days for each of the four parks in Disney World Orlando. Park experts recommend two days for each park, except Animal Kingdom, which can be easily done within a day.

SeaWorld | Orlando

When visiting Sea World in Orlando, you get the fantastic chance to see penguins, otters, dolphins, and other amazing sea creatures up close. The park will be pretty crowded, but there will be no special events affecting crowds heavily on certain days.

5 tips for a perfect SeaWorld visit in June:

1. Make reservations in advance: Save time and money by purchasing (mobile or printed voucher) tickets in advance: Park Admission Ticket Reservation
2. Pack a light sweater: June has hot temperatures outside, meaning air conditioners are on low temperatures indoors. The animal exhibits and aquariums which are not outside can get quite chilly. A sweater helps if you get cold easily.
3. Arrive early at the shows: As the number of daily shows is limited, they often fill up quickly. In particular, the dolphin show, Dolphin Adventures, and Shamu’s close-up, Orca Encounter. Try to arrive 20 to 30 minutes before showtime, especially on weekends.
4. Check the weather forecast: Check the forecast in the morning and prepare for your visit. Light rain showers are fine, as you can do many things indoors. However, many outdoor shows close due to bad weather (rainstorms or lightning).
5. Bring rain gear: You can get wet easily during one of the water rides or in the splash zone of the shows. We recommend bringing some rain gear or wearing clothes that dry quickly.

Kennedy Space Center | Orlando (Nearby)

The Kennedy Space Center is worth visiting and is only a 50-minute-drive from Orlando. You can either buy the admission ticket (mobile or printed voucher) solo or one where you don’t have to worry about driving as it includes transport from and to Orlando (via GetYourGuide – safe booking)

June is a great time to visit the Space Center as it offers visitors an indoor activity away from the rain showers. However, try to avoid weekends, as they are even more crowded in June. Also, keep in mind that you will often spend some time waiting to enter or get onto things, so plan accordingly.

Must-see attractions:

• Watch a rocket launch
• See a real space shuttle
• Go behind the gates (NASA restricted areas)
• Take the bus tour to the Apollo/Saturn V Center

Guided tour: You can explore everything on your own, but a guided tour is highly recommended since the area is overwhelming in its size and scope.

Tampa

In June, the average high temperature in Tampa is 90°F (32.2°C) and usually never goes below 60°F (15.5°C) during the nighttime hours.

Tampa Bay’s Sun Coast offers some of Florida’s best beaches, including Clearwater Beach and St. Pete Beach. The snowbirds are gone for the season, but the summer vacationers have arrived, so expect a steady flow of people, especially at beaches.

Besides hitting the beaches, Tampa has some great activities to offer for the whole family. Our tips:

Busch Gardens: Tampa’s huge theme park features intriguing wildlife with more than 2000 animals from around the world, huge roller coasters, live shows, restaurants, and games. Florida Aquarium: The Florida Aquarium is located on the southeastern edge of downtown Tampa. It’s truly fascinating and has a huge collection of marine life, with 14,000 animals, including stingrays, moray eels, and turtles. Consider 2-3 hours for your visit. Sarasota

Sarasota is a city on Florida’s Gulf Coast south of Tampa that was originally the winter home of the Ringling Brothers Circus.

It’s usually 10 degrees cooler in the morning (around 8 AM) in June compared to the afternoon and daily afternoon temperatures average a steady 88°F

Sarasota is a vibrant place with plenty of great things to do in June. Summer is one of the best times of the year to visit the beachtown of Sarasota! Relax on the beach or spend the day shopping on Pineapple Avenue. Sarasota is also host to a 2-week long eating festival and a 3-week long music festival. Music lovers and foodies would have an abundance of activities to fill their vacation!

Visiting tips: The Mote Marine Laboratory, which is ideal for small children, and the historical Marie Selby Botanical Gardens are two of Sarasota’s main attractions.

Tours by bike or bus are a fantastic way to experience the city, but you can also do it on your own.

Must-see/recommended:

• Ringling Museum: Perfect for a rainy afternoon in June

Tip: To discover the main attractions as well as the hidden neighborhoods, book a Sarasota sightseeing tour. It covers the historic downtown neighborhoods of Gillespie Park, Burns Court, Laurel Park, St. Armands Circle, and the Rosemary Design District.

Another spot you shouldn’t miss: The Unconditional Surrender Statue, which recreates the famous World War II photograph of a sailor kissing a nurse after returning home.

Everglades

In June, the Everglades is generally hot and the humidity is on the rise. Try to visit in the early morning hours before noon if possible, while temperatures aren’t at their highest. Keep in mind mosquitoes are thick in the summer, so wear loose-fit long clothing or bring some bug spray.

As wildlife starts to disperse with the rising water levels, the mornings and evenings are the best times to spot animals. The rainy season brings more rain showers, especially in the afternoon hours.

Miami

In June, the average temperature in Miami is 86°F (28°C). This is a great month to be in Miami and to take advantage of warm weather and water temperatures of 83°F.

Crowds: Miami tends to have decent crowds all year long, due to its southern location, popularity, and warm waters. June is busy, so expect an energetic atmosphere.

In June the average temperature for the Keys are 89°F (31.6°C), and enjoys the most sunshine in the whole state, perfect for sunsets on the beach!

June is the last month before hurricane season kicks off, so take advantage.

The Florida Keys cater to various types of travelers and there is something for everyone. This area is great for sportsmen, beach lovers, foodies, and history buffs of all ages.

Activities around the Keys

• Key West: The most popular of the Keys beaches and one of our favorites in all of Florida. It’s warm and ideal for living the island life at its best! We love visiting Key West in June because of the uncrowded beaches.
• Key Largo: Famous for being the Dive Capital of the world and being the site for the biggest artificial reef. Make sure to visit John Pennekamp Coral Reef State Park during your visit.
• Dry Tortugas National Park: The most southern National Park in the country, is the perfect place to learn about history. Take a tour to the island and learn about legends of sunken treasures, pirates, and ghostly civil war stories. Divers will also love this place because it has some of the least disturbed reefs in the whole country.
• Snorkeling: There are countless world-class snorkeling spots all over the Florida Keys. You can take boat tours to various locations, or just walk right in the water and explore at Fort Zachary Taylor Historic State Park.
• Seven Mile Bridge: This is amongst the longest bridges in the world, connecting the Florida Keys islands. It was also featured in various television dramas such as Burn Notice. Drive down over the water for some of the most spectacular views of a lifetime!
• Bahia Honda State Park: Bahia Honda State Park offers visitors an award-winning beach, a historic bridge, snorkeling tours, kayak adventures, and the Looe Key National Marine Sanctuary. Keep in mind, this park will close if it gets too crowded, to protect the environment and assure visitors enjoy their time. The park is open daily from 8:00am until sunset.
