"Cerise Bianca", formerly known as Lila Rossi, and known as Volpina, Chameleon and Hoaxer in her Akumatized forms, is one of the two secondary antagonists (alongside Mayura) of the Miraculous: Tales of Ladybug and Cat Noir franchise.

She is an enigmatic and deceitful girl who is incredibly talented at lying and manipulating others. Throughout the series, she becomes obsessed with destroying Marinette Dupain-Cheng/Ladybug for attempting to expose her lies, along with getting Adrien Agreste/Cat Noir to fall in love with her. Her various schemes have resulted in her being willingly akumatized by Hawk Moth on several occasions and additionally forming an alliance with his civilian identity, Gabriel Agreste, to "protect" Adrien from any negative influences. However, after she is revealed to be aware of his secret identity, she begins plotting to steal his Miraculous. As of the episode "Re-creation", she is the current holder of the Butterfly Miraculous, and is set to become Ladybug and Cat Noir's future archenemy.

She is voiced by Clara Soares in French and Lisa Kay Jennings in English.

Appearance[]

Without her disguises, she has hazel-brown eyes, fair skin, and her hair is purplish-brown and styled in a short and messy pixie cut.

As "Lila Rossi", her disguise applied a light tan-colored foundation with light vermilion lipstick, grayish chartreuse contact lenses, a and long dark scarlet wig with bangs that was loosely tied at the tips with orange bands where she had two shorter strands of hair. She had grayish green and brilliant red, light cerulean and vivid yellow, brilliant orange and dark magenta wristbands on her right arm. She wore a brilliant jacket over a dark gray sleeveless short pant legged jumpsuit that had tiny white spots. Additionally, she wore light gray leggings and brown high heel boots. She discarded the disguise after being exposed in "Confrontation".

While posing as "Cerise Bianca", she wears purple and brown versions of the same romper and jacket, she later creates an new ensemble for her identity as Iris Verdi: Utilizing blue contact lenses, a black bob cut wig and glasses. She wears a pink shirt with a black jacket and blue jeans.

As Volpina, she wore an orange mask with black edges, and her hair bands were black. On top of her head, two fake orange ears with white and black insides were attached. The top of her hair was black and then ombrés down to light brown with the tips of her hair being white. She also had orange lipstick, and her eyes remained grayish chartreuse green. The necklace with a fox tail hanging off of it was worn around her neck. she wore an orange superhero jumpsuit with a white section going down the front. Wrapped around her waist was an orange sash that looks like a fox tail. The edges of her collar and the tops of her upper arms had black lines, and her forearms and lower legs were solid black, with the soles of her feet being white with an orange fox footprinted on each. She was also armed with a replica of the Fox Miraculous wielder's flute.

As Chameleon, she retains her normal form. However, with her shape-shifting abilities, she could change it into whatever or whoever she kisses. She stole the forms of Adrien, a little boy, Cat Noir, and, accidentally, an oyster.

As Hoaxer, she had a similar but enhanced appearance to Volpina. The orange highlights in her hair had turned red alongside several parts of the costume. Instead of retaining the false Fox Miraculous on her chest, there was a black cross. She was also no longer armed with a flute.

Personality[]

Lila is highly deceptive and crafty, being able to manipulate people exceedingly with her lies, Tikki even remarking she's never seen someone as skilled at lying as her. She is overly fond of attention and has no qualms with how she may acquire it, leading to her making up various false tales about herself towards her peers in order to garner as much attention as possible. Being a possible psychopath, she seems to view no harm in these actions and possesses no remorse for them, yet can be incredibly distraught if they are exposed. Furthermore, she also seems to envy the attention others receive, quickly becoming jealous upon realizing Adrien has a crush on Ladybug and going out of her way to make him feel the same about her. She also does not forgive people whom she thinks to have wronged her easily, as shown in her refusing Ladybug's apology for her harshly exposing her lies.

Her hatred of Ladybug, in general, appears to be rather petty and undying, with her being enraged at the attention she receives and willing to grab up any opportunity to get back at her for supposedly ruining her chances with Adrien. Thus, as Volpina, she takes great joy in beating and tormenting Ladybug, gleeful in nearly succeeding at taking her Miraculous twice by exploiting her emotions. Through her usage of her powers, she can be incredibly precarious in her attempts to overcome Ladybug and Cat Noir, almost never confronting them directly and using her illusions to fool and trick them into being where she needs them to be, although her arrogance in doing so seems to match her cunning.

As shown in "Catalyst (Heroes' Day - Part 1)", she seems to take pleasure in ruining Ladybug's reputation using her illusions even after being de-Akumatized, showing absolutely no remorse, making her the first of Hawk Moth's victims to genuinely enjoy her actions while Akumatized. Overall, Lila is vindictive, spiteful and seemingly detached from telling any sort of truth, making her one of Ladybug and Cat Noir's more clever enemies.

Lila has proven to be very sarcastic and very hypocritical, and she hates being called a liar while she is, despite the fact that when she is with more people and with Marinette she pretends to be nice to her.

As a civilian[]

Lila is very skilled at lying and manipulating people, being skilled enough to create multiple identities to the point of enrolling into multiple schools and being able to fool at least three adult women into thinking she is their daughter while weaseling into their families.

As Volpina[]

She had a replica of the flute staff as her weapon. With her flute, Volpina could play a tune with an idea in mind to create a glowing orange ball of energy. She could throw the ball anywhere with her flute, and it would create whatever incredibly lifelike illusion that she wants. This could be as simple as creating multiple illusory copies of herself or grander by forming a large comet or a collapsing building. She also appeared to be able to imitate specific people with her illusions, as she created a duplicate of Adrien that was convincing enough to trick Ladybug. However, the illusions were intangible, and when touched would disappear in an orange cloud. Her flute was also long enough to wield as a staff.

As Chameleon[]

She could transform into another person after kissing them, causing her victim to fall unconscious for as long as she retained their form. While transformed, she, on top of already possessing enhanced physical abilities, also gained her victims' powers, being able to use Cat Noir's Cataclysm and his staff as much as he can. Her Akumatized object also seemed to change depending on what form she has, given that it changed from her earring in her initial form to a pearl by the time she transformed into an oyster.

As Hoaxer[]

She could transmit herself through Alliance rings, able to appear on multiple rings at once, and sense anyone who holds a ring. Due to possessing the Fox Miraculous' power of Mirage, she could create illusions and project them through the Alliance rings. Any Alliance users who seen these illusions would be under Hoaxer's control, and obeyed any command she gives out. If anyone took off their Alliance, her control is broken.

Relationships[]

Marinette Dupain-Cheng/Ladybug[]

Lila thoroughly despises Marinette, in both her civilian and superhero forms. During their first interactions, she is shown treating her with the same faux friendliness that she shows to her other classmates. Even when Marinette attempts to contradict her claims, she attempts to brush her efforts off, offering friendship to her despite this. However, when she learns that Marinette is aware of her manipulative nature, she quickly turns into a bully, threatening to destroy Marinette's life if she continues to stand against her. At the end of "Chameleon", she declares herself and Marinette to be at war, and from then on dedicates herself to isolating Marinette from her friends and family.

To this end, she begins implementing various schemes to ruin Marinette's reputation and drive away her friends, such as framing her for stealing exam answers, pushing her down the stairs, and stealing her fox pendant in "Ladybug", manipulating Kagami against her in "Perfection" and "Protection", and discrediting her as class representative in "Revelation". She is quick to taunt Marinette about her own success and takes enjoyment out of her misfortune, but chooses not to humiliate her in an "easy" fashion, like when she chooses not to take a picture of Marinette falling into garbage in "Oni-Chan". Her hatred of Marinette escalates into her secretly stalking and cutting her face out of photos, doing so in "Perfection" when she temporarily sabotages her friendship with Kagami, promising that she will soon have no one left.

Lila's dislike of Ladybug has been seen since their first meeting in "Volpina", where she develops a grudge against her for exposing her lies and ruining her chances with Adrien. While it is not explicitly stated, she appears to hate Ladybug out of envy for her popularity and attention, flying into a rage on Heroes Day when Ladybug is being hailed for her heroics. When she is Akumatized, she takes sad*stic joy in trying to defeat her, especially when she is Akumatized willingly. She has rejected each of Ladybug's attempts to settle their feud, and even attempts to use Oni-Chan as a means to eliminate her. Despite this, she puts on the façade that she, like most of Paris, respects and admirers her, though she still takes the opportunity to subtly insult her capabilities as a hero when talking about her in "Catalyst" and "Multiplication".

In Re-Creation, she promises to see Marinette again in high school, knowing that she is Ladybug.

Adrien Agreste/Cat Noir[]

Lila appeared interested in Adrien from her first appearance, making the attempt to woo him with stories about her world travels and by claiming to be a superhero descendant. Her attraction heightens into obsession as Volpina, where she tries to push herself only him by showing off her new abilities and refers to their brief meeting as a "date". It later becomes apparent that her affection for Adrien isn't legitimate like Marinette's, but out of a desire to increase her own popularity by being with him. She attempts to control his love life by trying to steer his gaze away from Marinette/Ladybug, and by discouraging possible rivals like Kagami; and, as a model for Gabriel, she relishes in the opportunity to appear close with Adrien, in spite of his opposition.

Her infatuation with Adrien quickly begins to wane as he shows increasing resistance to her lies, and personal dislike for her. By Season 5, she shows little interest in Adrien at all, and instead schemes to dismantle his relationship with Marinette. With Cat Noir, Lila harbors no personal resentment to him like she does to Ladybug, even choosing not to steal his Miraculous in favor of Ladybug's. Typically, she views him simply as an obstacle, but occasionally manipulates him in her schemes, like when she tricks him into leaving Ladybug alone to fight the villain in "Oni-Chan".

Gabriel Agreste/Hawk Moth/Monarch[]

Lila's relationship with Gabriel has changed the most over the course of the series. She is initially aware of his strict, controlling personality, yet expresses confidence that she can change his mind. Soon, Lila beings to ally with Gabriel to "protect" Adrien in exchange for becoming one of his models; unaware that Gabriel is using her as part of his schemes against Ladybug and Cat Noir. She deals with him cordially in each of their meetings, thanking him for the opportunity he has provided, and informing him of all her worries about Adrien's friends. She becomes comfortable enough in their relationship that she feels entitled to special treatment from Gabriel, and gets frustrated when she doesn't receive it.

It is later revealed that Lila knows more about Gabriel than she lets on, having been aware of his secret identity for some time. She uses this knowledge as part of her own schemes, such as manipulating him into akumatizing Kagami to sabotage Marinette and Adrien's relationship. Once Gabriel abandons her and calls off their alliance, she becomes fixated on getting revenge on him and claiming his Miraculouses for herself. Following her plan in "Revelation", she becomes the only person besides Nathalie Sancoeur to be aware of Gabriel's secrets, including his real name, past, and preservation of his wife, Emilie, which she plots to exploit.

With Hawk Moth/Monarch, Lila is at first portrayed as being only another one of his victims. But as the series progresses, she becomes is entirely comfortable with allying with him, even before being aware that he and Gabriel are the same person. She views the superpowers he provides as a means to fulfil her desire for revenge against Ladybug, and seems to take some pleasure in the havoc his plans cause; best seen in "Ladybug" when she smirks after Scarlet Moth targets Marinette's friends and family. She also knows his patterns well enough to use them to her advantage, manipulating him into Akumatizing victims as part of her own schemes multiple times. As of "Re-creation", she has become Monarch's successor after seizing the Butterfly Miraculous for herself upon his death.

Chloé Bourgeois[]

Lila initially disliked Chloé, viewing her as an obstacle towards her goals with Adrien. In "Miraculer", she goes as far as to manipulate Chloé in an attempt to make her hate Ladybug and get her akumatized, which sows the first seeds of doubt in Chloé's faith in Ladybug. She instead decides to exploit Chloé under the guise of an alliance as they share a hatred for both Marinette and Ladybug. Since then, they have begun scheming together in an attempt to bring down both their enemies; Lila often using Chloé's cruel behavior and desire for revenge to suit her own goals. Because of their partnership, she is one of the few people whom Chloé is willing to listen to and obey, and also one of the only people to regularly stand up to and silence her, usually when her impulsiveness threatens their plans. Ultimately, she abandons Chloé after using her to obtain Tomoe Tsurugi's laptop.

• Lila Rossi is best known as one of the most hated Miraculous Ladybug characters within the fandom due to how fake she is with everyone and her initial lack of motives behind her villainy other than just lying to make people like her and be more popular than Marinette, compared to how Hawk Moth's villainy is driven by his wishes to see his wife again. In fact, Lila was so despised by the Spanish fan community by 2022 that a fan of hers was harassed and cyberbullied to the point she committed suicide as revealed by her boyfriend just because she wished to see Lila again in the show.
• The pronunciation of Lila Rossi's name alters between dubs. In the French dub, her name is pronounced as "Lee-lah", while in the English dub, it is pronounced as "Lie-lah"; alluding to her deceptive personality.
  • The name Lila means "beauty", and her surname Rossi means "red" in Italian.
• Volpina is likely inspired by the fox spirit of East Asian lore, which uses illusions to fool people and occasionally takes the form of an attractive young woman. Her partnership with Chloé is also reminiscent of Da Ji, a famous fox spirit of Chinese mythology that corrupted a king into a tyrant that terrorized his people before being put down.
• Lila is the only known person, besides Gabriel Agreste/Hawk Moth, Nathalie Sancoeur/Mayura, and Chloé Bourgeois to hate Ladybug even when not akumatized.
• As of "Catalyst", Lila is the first past akumatized victim to have been re-akumatized into her previous identity with a different Akuma. The Akuma is also the first to have been revoked and de-Akumatized by Hawk Moth himself.
• Lila is one of the few villains in the series to have been offered and reject redemption multiple times, doing so in "Volpina", and "Chameleon".
• Strangely, unlike the other villains re-Akumatized by Scarlet Moth in "Catalyst" and "Mayura", Volpina did not receive a red redesign. According to Thomas Astruc, this was an animation error.
• Lila is the second person to rival Marinette for Adrien's affections, behind Chloé Bourgeois.
  • Chloé served as a light counterpart to Lila, becoming progressively more heroic and less antagonistic to Marinette over the course the series, whereas Lila became progressively worse, seeking to destroy Marinette/Ladybug and take Adrien for herself, even willingly allowing herself to be willingly Akumatized for this purpose. Unlike Lila, who remains loyal to Hawk Moth until he sever his ties with her in Season 5, Chloé was manipulated as a pawn into betraying Cat Noir and Ladybug in Season 3, reverting to her old ways as a result.
• Volpina, along with Copycat, Antibug, and Queen Wasp, is one of the few Akumatized villains who is based on a pre-existing Miraculous holder. As such, her powers and appearance are very similar to Rena Rouge, as they can both create illusions and have similar fox-themed costumes. However, unlike Volpina, who can create multiple illusions without losing power, Rena Rouge can only make one illusion per transformation.
• In "Oni-Chan", it was implied that Lila is so attention-seeking is that her parents, particularly her mother, are constantly out of her life because of their jobs. This theory was later disproven in "Revelation", where it is revealed that Lila actually has three different mothers, living a different life with each of them.
• Based on Lila's behavior and mindset, she has a classic case of anti-social personality disorder, a mental disorder characterized when a person is unable to feel empathy to others and only understands emotions that affect themselves, such as gratification.
• Lila is the fourth character in the series to know that Gabriel Agreste is Monarch, following Nathalie Sancoeur, Félix Fathom and Tomoe Tsurugi. She is also (presumably) the second to have deduced Gabriel's identity by herself.
• The 2023 card game Miraculous Secrets confirms that Lila isn't her real name, asking the question "What if Lila's biggest lie so far was that her name wasn't Lila?". This was previously implied in the series, where it is shown Lila uses multiple identities.
  • In Miraculous RP: Quests of Ladybug & Cat Noir, it is revealed her last name as Cerise is Bianca.
• Some fans believe that Lila is actually an adult pretending to be a teenager. This theory actually does have some basis, as to be as skilled in lying and manipulation as she is would require years of experience.
  • Some other fans also believe that, since hardly anyone manages to realize or figure out her lies, Lila actually has the ability to diminish the intelligence of those around her, or perhaps even a Sentimonster with superhuman lying abilities.
    • If this is true, then she might be the fourth human-Sentimonster to exist, the other three being Adrien, Félix, and possibly Kagami.
• In "Re-creation", it is implied that Cerise may be aware of Marinette's secret identity as Ladybug, as she presumably witnessed her battle with Monarch, and also promises to see her again while donning the Butterfly Miraculous; although it is left ambiguous.
  • If said information is confirmed to be true, than she is one of the few people who know Marinette's secret identity as Ladybug, alongside Alya, Su-Han, Félix, Kagami, Luka, Re-Verse Marinette/Shadybug, and Gabriel.
• She might be suffering from a mental illness called "Psychopathy" since throughout the seasons her characteristics matches to the symptoms of it.
